Many thanks for this pup which I believe has great potential. Currently testing a manual frugal install on a fat 32 USB 2 stick. No problem creating an ext2 save file.
The following have been loaded:
3 sfs load fixes by rodin.s (then made executable)
Instant_Update-Lucid528-001
Chromium-15-Lucid
PupControl-1.7.5
fontwizard|Configure fonts for LCD
icewm-1.3.7pre2-L519-lucid
PupShutdown-1.7.2
news-0.5.0-0|GTK-based highly graphically-customizable RSS Ticker
lupu_devx_528.sfs

Can you please make the kernel source/headers sfs available in order to test the latest NVIDIA driver (NVIDIA-Linux-x86-285.05.09.run) ?

Having loaded the lupu_devx.sfs three new items appear on the utility menu:
Glade interface designer
Sysprof profiler
Valide
Has the correct devx been uploaded ?

ETP: thank you for testing it. I want to tell you that "kernel headers" included in devx_528.sfs. You can run NVIDIA-Linux-x86-285.05.09.run directry after you load devx_528.sfs.
I have tested it.

'Thank You' for the 3.0.4. Kernel in 528... Works like a dream and besides, this is the very first time any of the 528's worked for me without giving the ole 'KERNEL PANIC' on startup, so don't anyone ever say newer kernels aren't for older machines!! Wow.. is this thing fast, beats the 529 for speed I have to say.

'Nice job'

EDIT: Kernel Panic is still there only happens on reboot or startup AFTER savefile is created... All 528's are not creating a Full, Good savefile for me for some reason?!

Sszindian: hi, I want to know if you have any other version puppy on your hdd? or other pupsave file ? if Kernel Panic happens on reboot, I think the kernel load wrong modules in "pupsave" file. so, I advise that you shold clean your hdd.
or wrong "initrd.gz" file has been loaded after reboot.

Module ath9k for Atheros AR9285

#63 Post by mories »

Thank you for the 3.0.4. Kernel, but it does not work for my wireless:
02:00.0 Network controller [0280]: Atheros Communications Inc. AR9285 Wireless Network Adapter (PCI-Express) [168c:002b] (rev 01)

The module ath9k works in other Puppys (kernel 2.6.xx) and in Fatdog64 (kernel 3.0.3).

Perhaps your kernel configuration does not include
config ATH9K_PCI
bool "Atheros ath9k PCI/PCIe bus support"
depends on ATH9K && PCI
---help---
This option enables the PCI bus support in ath9k.
Say Y, if you have a compatible PCI/PCIe wireless card.

Kernel Panic SOLVED

I believe you are right! Today I loaded 528 (304 Kernel) onto a machine that only had windows xp... It created a savefile and on reboot started right up like it should. I'm sure the no-boot problem is due to having several other Puppy savefiles on the same HDD on my other box!

I would like to suggest (if possible) instead of using the name "initrd.gz" maybe use unique names (for different versions) like "initrd-528-304.gz"... like I say, don't know if this is possible but I will bet it would solve a whole bunch of problems for users!

Old Thinkpad

#70 Post by sszindian »

wuxiandianzi:

Just a quick report to let you know how the 528 with 3.0.4 Kernel works with an older laptop:

IBM T22 Thinkpad (Notebook)
512 RAM

Program loads, creates a savefile (BTW with 'Other' savefiles on the HDD - 214 puppy, 520 puppy, Cloud puppy, and a version of Windows XP - which I don't use ever).

Everything works just fine.... even installed Iron 13-800 as the default browser and for an old box, it's pretty darn fast!

Hi wuxiandianzi

Running lupu_528_k3.0.7_SMP(cpu) update:20111021 now
and all seems good.

Running on 8/9yr old Acer Laptop TravelMate 243LC.
256mb ram. 2.5Ghz Celeron Proc. 800mb swap partition.
Manual frugal to sda1 ext3.

Only minor issue - battery not recogised. (was it ok in k3.0.4)?
must check

Guessing that is new kernel stuff (not a major problem)

Fantastic puppy - thanks for making this available for us.

Very best regards - Ray

Thank you, lots of kernel modules configured as "M" , so you can modprobe it by hand. such as "modprobe battery ".
I will check it later.

Why no USB3 support in new Kernel?

#78 Post by otropogo »

Have just burned the latest version of this update (from the URL on page 5) in the hope it would include USB3 support, as Slacko 5.29.6 does.

However, puppy didn't detect my USB3 drive on the expresscard port. Is Slacko 5.29.6 using a more recent version of the Linux Kernel?

I also encountered another problem I haven't seen in a long time in Puppy - failure to automatically configure the Internet connection. Every previous version of Puppy 4.xx, lupu and Slacko managed this, as do SLAX, Tinycore, and Knoppix.

rodin.s wrote:I have fixed sfs loading and mounting for 3-d kernel. I have changed three files: filemnt, bootmanager and sfs_load (all in /usr/sbin)
Barry was right about this "some scripts in Puppy that are hard-coded to expect "2.6"."
Woofy does as well, but most users won't use it.. and it probably needs other updates to work with Racy anyway...
