Hi,

I was taking a image file 'img' (2GB file) to my home machine.
I created the file img.tar.gz on ubuntu 9.04 (64bit).

On wary500, I did
tar -xvzf img.tar.gz

I saw one error at last.

gzip: stdin: invalid compressed data--crc error
tar: Child returned status 1

But the image file 'img' was there (now the file size was exactly same as the one that I had compressed) and I could use that too.

Where is the mistake?
Or we can just ignore this error message?

Sincerely,
Srinivas

Usually that means that either the file was corrupted while being either compressed or during the transfer. Sometimes also files that are zipped up on certain unix systems bring up this error on others (I don't know why)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cyclic_redundancy_check

find /lib/modules/`uname -r` -name "*crc*"

/lib/modules/2.6.30.5/kernel/crypto/crc32c.ko
/lib/modules/2.6.30.5/kernel/lib/libcrc32c.ko
/lib/modules/2.6.30.5/kernel/lib/crc-itu-t.ko
/lib/modules/2.6.30.5/kernel/lib/crc-ccitt.ko
/lib/modules/2.6.30.5/kernel/lib/crc-t10dif.ko

There are some crc modules , that may have been loaded on other distros or compiled into their kernel and would maybe influence something .
