Slacko Power Subject description: Tips for using Puppy 5.3 |
|
To celebrate the imminent release of Puppy 5.3 (not final but getting close) I started a wiki tips section:
http://puppylinux.org/wikka/SlackoTips
Here is one to start:
Got a mouse-wheel?
In the enclosed browser (Seamonkey 2.4)
goto the pull down menu and select
Edit/preferences/advance/mouse-wheel
Now change to zoom in and out
. . . ZOOMY . . .
What are your tips?

Downloaded a cool image from the web or your camera?
Want to use it as your background wallpaper?
Right-click the file in Rox-Filer and choose "Send to Backgrounds", open Wallpaper -set backdrop image from the desktop menu and set it to your background... too easy!

Pequalizer in the multimedia menu controls audio output globally. That means all sound you hear can be controlled.

Mick, I think you could have made it even simpler, why not add right click that opens it directly with set_bg script from "Wallpaper" app (in /usr/local/apps ? then if you look inside wallpaper there's set_bg script) so there's no need to copy/open setter

Want compositing effects including drop shaddows to your windows? Add this line near the bottom of the hidden file /root/.xinitrc
so that the bottom of the file looks like this:
| Code: | # rox -p /root/Choices/ROX-Filer/PuppyPin
#fi
xcompmgr -c -C &
#exec $CURRENTWM
#v2.11 GuestToo suggested this improvement...
which $CURRENTWM && exec $CURRENTWM
[ -x $CURRENTWM ] && exec $CURRENTWM
exec jwm
###END### |
Re-start X for effects to start.
This also activates transparency in JWM if your theme supports it.

Do not try the drop shadow on ye olde machines with limited graphics as it will slow them. Should be fine for anything Slacko targeted
ah DaveS reminded me of this one:
How do I move programs between windows?
Right click on your program 'rectangle' in the icon bar (far left) and drag to the second window.
Create up to 10 Windows with
Menu / Desktop / JMM configuration / tray management

Its a useful idea to customise the 'open with' menu in Rox, which is available with a right click on a file/directory, to include Rox itself. That way, you can right click on a directory and effectively open it in a new Rox window, leaving the parent window on the screen too. Useful for drag and drop etc.
