thank you bohocmansi, you weren't expected to test 1.9.92. It was a safety version in case my op had problems so another could take over without starting again from square 1, however just about everything has been fixed and i'm home and back at it again. Marvelous what is done nowadays using keyhole surgery and the short time (6hrs) from admittance to discharge.

However, back to 1.9.92. I have so far found over 100 missing links and incomplete or incorrect paths as far as puppy is concerned. Like barry has done with wary/racy at least, I shall be creating a zz-puppy-mage2.pet type file to address the problems and allow both mageia and puppy core packages to run together. However I shall also be creating a number of puppyied mage2 cutdown replacements as there are quite a number of packages where we in the puppy world only need two or three of the libs and not the 20+ lib files in the package.

Another reason we need so many as mageia 2 has kept existing structures when updating core components and major package releases, rather than using the package standards. I am hoping they can be convinced to fix and use these 'standard' locations for mageia 3, else the only packages that will happily run on their system are their own.

I hope that I shall release the next and real first alpha in about a fortnight.

thanks darkcity, i'm almost back to normal and still improving, don't have to see the surgeon for three months so he must think i'm ok now.

Anyway, an Alpha release is now available for testing. See the first page for details.

And just a short note on qt5 vs qt4.

Qt4 follows the old local machine or a server location for an application and resources, qt5 expects the application to live in a 'cloud' environment by default. Very different.
Also I was told that qt5 will be in a Alpha/Beta/Release cycle for quite a while before settling down yet, big parts of it haven't even been written/coded yet and the initial release will have quite a bit of qt4 code in qt5 wrappers. It does use Qt Quick as it's primary IDE though so new players should find it very easy to work with.

Qupzilla 1.3 is incredibly good.

It has greasemonkey.

Pemasu made a pet with the Youtuber plugin installed, so youtube can open in external media players.

I use it instead of firefox. :)

There's also the Pencil animator: http://pencil-animation.org

Hi Gnuxo - I just downloaded qupzilla from the link you posted and it downloaded as a .gz file which did nothing, so I tried renaming it by removing the .gz suffix and replacing it with .pet - which installed fine. Will give qupzilla a whirl.

Well, it boots. :)
Live pfix=ram, mage2-1.9.83 booted to a incorrect resolution (1280x1024)....used xorgwizard to choose the "nouveau" driver and X wouldn't start. Reverted to the "nv" driver and got the desired 1366x768 resolution.Nvidia 7025 onboard graphics. Sound and internet were working on initial boot.

sys-info-120717.tar.gz is attached...... just rename to sys-info-120717.gz (had to rename for forum to accept).

SeaMonkey doesn't launch....I installed Netscape Navigator.

Code: Select all

# seamonkey
/usr/lib/seamonkey-2.2/seamonkey-bin: error while loading shared libraries: libhunspell-1.2.so.0: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
#
Same for MTPaint......

Code: Select all

# mtpaint
mtpaint: error while loading shared libraries: libtiff.so.3: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
#
Hardinfo launched but just showed a blank gray window.More testing later.

MD5 was verified as well.

I just tried to run qupzilla on a different puppy and it seems I am missing the libQtDBus.so.4 etc. Any idea where I might find those libs? Are they specific to QTpuppy?

I recommend you gram Pemasu's QT4.8.sfs
It has everything. Much less hassle.

http://www.smokey01.com/pemasu/QT-4.8.0-dpup/libs/

Go to that link and pick which one you want.

Qupzilla needs gstreamer for html5 support.
For Gstreamer, you'll need the Gstreamer dependencies.
http://www.smokey01.com/pemasu/gstreame ... -0.0.1.pet

Get VLC and use the included youtuber plugin for Youtube. Enjoy. :)

Hope I helped.

Mageia 2 Puppy, Mage and 'qtpuppy'

#72 Post by Billtoo »

I did a manual frugal install.
I installed the devx, the only driver that would work is vesa at a low
resolution.
I installed the zz_mage2_fixup-20120711.pet
Viewnoir wouldn't start, hardinfo is not working correctly, seamonkey
working okay.
I had no problem compiling certain programs but others wouldn't
compile showing missing libs etc.
Htop only shows 5 cores on this pc which has 8 cores, it shows all of
the memory.
I added the mageia-2 repos and updated them in ppm, I installed a
newer version of geany in ppm (0.20)
That's it so far.

thank you billtoo,

problems noted, can you list the other failed packages please?

I had thought I had fixed viewnior as it had a number of dependancies. Did it not start for you, or only a particular part not work as expected? Mageia doesn't use it and i've used a puppy one that barry uses, I shall have to look deeper or rebuild it from scratch.

Hardinfo was ok for me and all my primary testers in all cases, is it the same thing james is having?, can you list your problems with it and attach a hardinfo from another puppy and i'll see if I can sort it out.

I suspect your video driver may be to blame with the screen, try a manual xorgwizard from the prompt and see what you get, you may have to download a driver to get your own from the mageia non-free repositry as mageia has a policy of only including totally free drivers by default and I must follow that to use their base. If nothing shows as driver and settings on the final screen, that was the problem I mentioned appearing once but could not duplicate so all extra info is welcome.

I did warn there would be problems with apps, as a lot of puppy apps use older libraries than mageia 2 uses and need links added, I know, as i've created over a hundred to get the base working, run a search for the name only and add the symlink (not relative) to the base lib into your package build. Mageia apps should be ok, though ocassionally it needs an extra mageia lib or two installed as they have sometimes split libs into smaller 'chunks' than we have.

thanks again

thank you james,

looks like i've broken hardinfo with a 'cleanup', although I did think I had tested that afterwards, tonights problem!;

yes the nv driver is as suspected, maybe one of the non-free mageia nv driver packages will give you better results if you think it's needed, mageia has a policy of only totally free in the 'core' and I must follow that if i'm to use their base.

I shall have to look at ext4 settings in my kernel build and mageia's system as I use ext2 and ext3 by default's as well as playing with btrfs, maybe i've forgotten to set it up corectly.

And, yes I do like their dillo package, they spent some time on getting it working well and fast!

thanks again
