So far it doesn't seem to work... something about that NeoMagic card that Xorg really, really, really doesn't like... also can't seem to auto-detect the screen's maximum resolution. Not sure if that's just old tech or what.

Starting to wonder if this thing doesn't have either a damaged motherboard or cooling problem. Seems to like to shut off with a steadily blinking CPU light... has me a little worried. Then again... if it dies outright, I'll just put it in the local eWaste bin, not worth the money it would cost to get repair parts... assuming that they're even available.

I'm gonna let this thing cool down a bit and try again. I know for a fact that the NeoMagic driver won't work (and I can't seem to "blackbox" it into functioning), and the vesa driver refuses to work as well... so I'm going to see if it works just fine with the default Xorg driver (whatever that is).

FWIW... TurboPup turns the LCD off (when it should be displaying a desktop, mind you!) with the default Xorg driver, and xvesa makes for a very seasick looking desktop (it's bright flaming green!). Can't seem to find an option to use a driver with TurboPup, even... oh well, there's a separate thread for that.

Well... the default driver *does* work ... if you wait long enough for it to render ;)

No offense Igu but I think I'll stick to trying to get TurboPup working...

EDIT: we're talking 10+ min, from pressing the power button to what could potentially be called useability. The screen is almost entirely black until the "move your mouse here" box disappears, then it (slowly) loads the dock, and then it (more slowly) loads the background. There's still a black box around the dock that I'm guessing is the vid card attempting (and failing) to load a transparency effect. It's a rather Pyrrhic victory at best.

hmm, copying the tint2rc was my first thought but:

Code: Select all

# pwd
/initrd/pup_ro2/root/.config
# ls -l
total 0
drwxr-xr-x 3 root root 31 2010-10-09 19:11 rox.sourceforge.net
#
strange I don't have it.

I don't have rbpaint, rgbpaint is there.
But scrot is working.

I think I have to verify the download and eventually re-install.
I edited the tint rc file to have hide de-activated and rebooted, but all of a sudden the tray hides and doesn't come back.

Will post back.

EDIT
I verified the checksum --- it was ok.
Nevertheless I erased the installation and started again.

I first looked at the bootmanager issue.
This is the error message

EDIT1 - SFS loading
I installed sfs load on the fly.
At least I can load my needed sfs files, as the bootmanager doesn't work.

As Guy Dog is quite snappy, I activated, through a sfs, enlightenment e17.
Now I enjoy my favorite desktop environment, but more snappy.

Dougal: use this one, it's fresh from today. The Bochs build script (which was removed but somehow sneaked into my upload) is just an experiment - I saw its size and thought it could be a nice security enhancement for Puppy (i.e for sandboxing).

That's an upstream bug; same goes for the loopback interface issue. I'm still not sure what causes this.

Just do this:

Code: Select all

ifconfig lo up
To work around the lo issue.

no session saving?

#205 Post by Plankton »

Hi, thanks alot Iguleder for the fabulous Guy Dog. Works like a charm on my aspire one A150 :D

How do I save my session? Tried manual save by typing pup2save from rxvt and there was some notification saying "request to save current session is queued." But nothing happened after that..
Also, osmo is not working, started in rxvt and theres "bus error" message. Is it just me?

That would explain why the CUPS web interface doesn't work.

Good news! :)

I converted even more of Guy Dog into fresh PET packages. The new packages include GParted, a complete audio stack (ALSA and all audio libraries, which the multimedia applications depend on) and more core packages (e.g module-init-tools, Tar and gzip).

Most of the packages are smaller than the old ones, even in the case of PET packages.

They bring the percentage of Debian packages closer to 50%: 150 packages (while there are 132 PET packages). This doesn't mean much; for example: we used Barry's old, static GParted package - the new one (which is the latest version) isn't static and pulls in 4 packages (and yes, it's smaller), because they were not compiled statically into the package.

I have a suggestion to use pcmanfm and hal for mounting drives or hotpupx using wbar vertical bar like in Boxpup.

first user experience:

x: the touchpad/mouse sensitivity is way too low by default
x: there's grun, but no win+r or alt-f2 to actually get at it
> once I edited the ~/.config/openbox/rc.xml and added it, the whole pmount+pupkill+urxvt (grun!) is fantastic
x: you can't just restart X from the menu
x: mplayer goes fullscreen - but leaves the actual video the same puny size in a fullscreen black window

I'm glad I've read these 14 pages - I've changed the wallpaper, (http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-xaQOVk4rE6c/T ... d_Map3.jpg ,and I'm using the "fear" openbox theme at box-look.org, http://box-look.org/content/show.php/Fear?content=68540

> are "all these debian packages" going to work with this release? (I've been thinking about the fact that slapt-get is tonnes smaller than apt-get, and might just compile that soon, having looked at pussy-linux and g:micro(goblinx) and the whole "debian/slack/arch/ packages are cool because they've 'already' been made" scenario)

> iguleder: you need to fix the mplayer fullscreen issue, and I prefer rox-filer (even though this emelFM2 is auto-completing directories like mad - idunno) > I could actually use this thing as-it-is-now if only for the fullscreen video not working fine>

You may want to include rsync that is neither in the main not the devx sfs.

Hi stu90,
I have changed some lines of code to let ymount work without rox
version 1.3 (sc0ttman's 1.2 is producing just segfaults with me)

Note, version 1.3 will open emelfm2 just once and put the main window of ymount always on top

I am uploading it here only because it will be interesting for guydogs only.

Enjoy

Edited:

International users should install language support
and copy gtk20.mo to their /usr/share/locale/*/LC_MESSAGES

Iguleder, please put gtk20.mo into next version of guydog
this will translate the texts of the gtk-stock items

to make videos resize in mplayer, you can use
#mplayer -zoom video.avi
or you can put zoom="1" in your ~/mplayer/config file

I'm going to use this puplet now, it's working great and looks cool!

The 64-bit port project is almost done! :D

I made a new Busybox package and now I'm working on the kernel. I want to use 2.6.32.x as the first kernel, because it's the most stable kernel around (well, it's the "longterm" one).

Once the kernel is ready, I'll need to find out how to build small and static packages for grep and other stuff in the initramfs.

I hope it won't be too problematic to build all the packages built on Guy Dog (for i486) on the x86_64 port, because of all the missing stuff.

Anyway, this is great already. Almost the whole Guy Dog can be ported to any architecture easily now :)

EDIT: I'm extremely tired from working so hard, so I decided to take a break and do something I've been thinking about for a very long time - a Trinity for Puppy.

Some of you probably remember that I made a Trinity SFS about a year ago if I remember right, from Debian packages.

Now I'm trying to go the other way and build Trinity inside Puppy, so it's both smaller and more ... native. Currently, I'm building just the Trinity base (qt3, arts, tqtinterface, kdelibs and kdebase), which means, a basic desktop with a file manager, a terminal emulator and a text editor. I want it to be smaller than 30 MB. Applications should be extremely easy to add, since the Trinity developers are doing some extremely good work - they ported many components to CMake.

Using Guy Dog's pdf viewer, how can I scroll down?

The text was small, so I magnified the image until about 4/5 of it was off the bottom of the screen. But everything I tried for scrolling down just switched to the top of the next page. :( Anyone figured out how to scroll down to read the lower parts of the current page?

Is there another way to call up Guy Dog's menu, apart from clicking on empty space of the desktop? (When reading a magnified pdf image that fills the screen and extends way out beyond the sides, there is nowhere on the desktop to click to bring up Guy Dog's menu.)
