This is the bugfix follow up to 5.3.

Slacko Has been out for a few days now and much feedback has been positive. Of course a few bugs have surfaced for which I hope to have an update pet soon, and a bugfix 5.3.1 release about a month to six weeks away. There will be no major enhancements apart from packages added to PPM. I am working on Blender and Openshot (thanks sneekylinux).

Hopefully in the new year we can progress to a 5.3.5 release with upgraded kernels and apps. Should be a fun ride

Here are the essentials for woofers:

You must run the fixups_templates script in the root of your woof tree before you run 2createpackages.

Add the DISTRO_PKGS_SPECS-slackware-13.37 to your woof tree.

Get the latest Packages-puppy-slacko-official file from here and place it at the root of your woof tree.

Get the slacko_hacks tarball and unzip it in support, replacing support/slacko.

Run woof! Have fun!

Mick was getting used to a Woof compile (Spup) of Puppy long before Spot (original developer name) was announced.
It was very important to Mick that BarryK sanctioned the development of 5.3. Which he did and six months ago Spot entered pre alpha testing.
For the first two pre-releases I could not even get a desktop

Eventually Larrys excellent and mature Lucid inspired and directly led to Slacko with Barryks constant refining of Woof.

Puppy is a do-acracy
and the Developers and testers have done their bit (thanks guys)

Sorry, mick - bit of a disaster. Extended my testing to an old Armada (C650). All of the previous sound and some new video issues as well as touchpad matters showing. Woofwoof isn't active at boot up. This is associated with the rather major sound problems. Moving the cursor over the woofwoof panel clears it, without the music, but failing to do that prevents FirstRun, errr, running. Got Xorg running on the Armada, but after setting up the FR parameters and restarting X, all the icons change to generic ones. ALSA now works, but chicken-and-egg syndrome persists. Touchpad cursor works, but need to use lh &rh buttons to activate functions by default: BK has fixed tapping in the latest Wary.
For testing, apart from all these major issues, I must have sound up and woofwoof audible by default. Without that it makes setting up a misery. Why is the woofwoof panel coupled will the malfunctioning of set-up? As reported many moons back, the default speed of the touchpad cursor is too slow. Why cannot the Retrovol defaults all be switched on?
Will check with an intermediate Athlon D1800 board when I get the chance.

"ROCKS", unfortunately, for me, conveys no useful information.

What would be helpful, at least for me, as a prospective user of Slacko, is a simple, two line description of WHY Slacko is superior to either:

a. Puppy Wary (newest edition from a couple weeks ago);

b. Slackware itself;

I am using Puppy on an older, 32 bit, 1 GHz computer. I have a LOT of trouble, compared with other Linux distros, doing three simple tasks:

1. Using VLC;

2. Using the package manager to resolve dependencies, particularly, finding, downloading and installing something called xcb-util, whatever that may be;

3. Getting rid of junky, unneeded software. ("Remove Built-in Packages" does not work)

How would switching to Slacko, address any of these specific problems?

I was able, with the newest Wary, to download an old, obsolete (1.1.5--from one year ago) version of VLC (current version is 1.1.11), but naturally, it does not work, with Wary--instead the wretched MPlayer emerges.

What Puppy does better, in my experience, than any other distro, is handle graphics.

The video display, under Puppy, remains superb, compared with ANY other linux distro, and I've installed most of them....

I am so impressed with the excellent quality of the video display, uniquely, in my experience, attained with Puppy, that I stick with the irritating aspect of installation (far more difficult for a novice than Ubuntu, Slackware, Debian), software management (rubbish compared with Debian), and VLC installation, which, thus far, remains a nightmare under Puppy, and is either effortless with the others, else, not even required, under the best distros (e.g. CrunchBang).

With all of my other Linux distros, I may have horrible images, (I cannot achieve even 1024 x 768 with CrunchBang, let alone the 1280 x 1024 that I gain with both Puppy and XP) but at least I can hear music.

What I need is a version of Puppy designed to work with VLC. Is Slacko going to offer that capability?

From what I have seen, the answer is NO.

That's ok, if so, because I have confidence that eventually, Puppy will offer the best audio player, VLC, just as now, Puppy offers the sharpest, highest quality video display. Eventually, the junky stuff will be eliminated (remember the default from several years ago!!! wow. Even Amarok seemed better, and it had been certainly the second worst player ever conceived....

I have been waiting for several years, now, for Puppy to catch up to the rest of the world, regarding VLC, and perhaps I must wait another few years, until it finally dawns on someone there in Puppyville, that, hey, people do use their computers for something other than watching pictures of slobbering carnivores. (Correct, I like animals in the wild, not sharing the bedroom).

What's wrong with MPlayer? Does it not work for you? What do you want with VLC specifically?

Try http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=69226 version 1.1.10 not quite as up to date as you asked for, but close. There is a build for slacko for you there. You mention there you don't like Ubuntu so avoid Lucid Puppy. Why? They are not the same, not even close.

1) There are 2 packages for VLC in the basic Slacko PPM repo. One depends on the full QT package (which gets dragged in when selecting), the other is stand alone (with many thanks to Stripe).

Both working fine for me.

2) xcb-util is included by default

3) remaster if you wish, if you have a full install delete stuff as you wish

Please do your research before making such claims as, and I quote;
