Get your Puppy to use your cell network to the internet

#1 Post by gcmartin »

Saw a thread on Puppy and Cell Networking to gain access to the Internet. I did not want to divert that thread as it discusses a "specific" method of internet access via cells.

This thread intents to try to provide a requests for additional depictions of how to use the Puppy to get thru the Internet using your cell phone as a path to the network.

Thus, as such, this thread is expected to expand into a directional or a guide to use Puppy via cell networks.

Please offer anything you feel is missing in this post that the community can benefit from.

As I understand it, there are 3 ways to use your cell device as a means of getting to the Internet using Puppy; You cell device can
  1. be a modem
  2. be a blue-tooth server
  3. be a router
depending which cell device you have. I use the word device because cell service providers have differing devices and phones that you can have on your plan for servicing.

Let's assume you have Internet as an option in your service plan for your device. Let's also assume your device is a smartphone. Then your device could allow you to use any of the 3 selections, above. These are "cell phone" selections for it is telling the cell phone how you want it to behave and to be used.

On the other side, we have Puppy. Puppy must be told to use a specific subsystem to "connect" to the Internet.
  • How, you ask:
  • The easiest one is this one
Cell device as a Wifi Router and Puppy using its Wifi service. Simple for most/many/some are already doing this with Laptops they use with Puppy. For desktop PUPs you'll need a Wifi card/USB or LAN AP to access this service that your cell device provides. Easy!
  • Cell device as a Blue-tooth device. Blue-tooth is peer-to-peer, so it will talk with anything that will "pair" with it. YOU MUST have a Blue-tooth antenna provided via motherboard, card/USB adapter so that the Puppy PC has the hardware technology to do this pariing. There is Puppy package(s) technology available in Puppyland to provide a subsystem to add blue-tooth functionality to Puppy. This will allow your PUPPY OS to pair with your cell such that it can get thru your cell phone to the Internet. This community needs examples of how to do this using the differing packages for Puppy to do this. And, the community needs some real world examples of cell phone(s) setup so that users understand how to make this usable wherever in the world they might go with both their phone and their laptop.
  • Cell phone as a Modem. The community, here again, needs additional examples of how to do this with the various cell phone(s) that exist. One Thread which covers a method is this one, here.
Please offer anything that you can which could help the community understand how a cell network can become Puppy usable?

Thanks in advance.

Where is that thread?

I'll lieave this thread in the Howto section for now. If it doesn't grow into a useful Howto soon I'll move it.
