So this is progress ???

Hi all

just downloaded another pup that is supposed to boot straight to desktop, what happens?

it sends a resolution outside of my monitors range resulting in a blank screen. (same problem that stops me from using debian and mint)

I have to hit alt ctrl backspace to get to a prompt so that I can run xorgwizard set my resolution then restart xwin, then the bloody gui pops up asking if I want to alter settings (which is a right pain), if I want to change something I will change it, I dont need some nanny program wasting resources/time asking me if I want to do whatever.

I am just waiting for xorgwizard being removed on the grounds that with booting directly to desktop, xorgwizard is no longer needed (then I couldnt use any of those pups at all  )

now on some pups you are getting a gui on shutdown (even when not making a save file) as well.

is this progress?? I don't think so, (next will we be stopped from running as root because it makes some peoples life easier/prettier/ more secure??? ) I am using modern puppys less and less as a live cd/dvd (particulaly on rescues) because of the time wasted by the setup gui's (Found myself using spup 100 as it has the speed (and no guis) but some of the libs are starting to age a bit)

Is it just me that want's a modern puppy (up to date progs, libs and devx) without all these gui's wasting resources, my valuble time and still trying to tell me what to do?? (as well as asking bloody stupid questions.)

cheers

Don

And what's wrong with that? If you are using Puppy as a rescue Linux, does it really matter if "some of the libs are starting to age a bit"? All you really care about is hardware detection.
now on some pups you are getting a gui on shutdown (even when not making a save file) as well.
Before the GUI versions, you were asked exactly the same questions at shutdown, but in text mode.

Just guessing, but probably it boots straight to desktop for most users, but not you and a minority of others?

Oh ok... I have a crappy Nvidia GPU that has a very limited resolution range, I blame my GPU not the apps and programs that exceed its limitations, but I do understand your pain!

A nanny program like Xorgwizard? ;)

is this progress?? I don't think so,
X based GUIs have advantages: internationalisation, images, mouse as well as keyboard, access to more (i18n'd) help, more options and commands available...

Some would say that having the GUIs loading after X, is less daunting and simpler to use, and that choosing all your settings at first boot is better than hunting around the menus later on..

I regularly boot fresh Puppies off USB, in many different places, I find shinobars GUIs excellent for quick setup of a system in all areas... Far greater scope than the old method, which can still be used if needed...

You see, preferences must be chosen some time or other.

Barry is balancing things nicely with PupDialog - a small utility that loads dialog or Xdialog, depending if X is running or not... Other than that he has mirrored shinobars work closely...

Next Pup? Or Guy Dog? RexBang? Lots of options, actually! :D

I hear a lot of frustration with little if any useful troubleshooting information... don't worry, I'm used to it

Which Puppy version (feel free to list "all that apply")
Make/Model of computer or custom build...
Complete specifications...

...then I can start being helpful.

FWIW, the last time I had any issue with graphics, I was working with PupNGo on a custom build of rather antique specifications... I rather suspect that the northbridge on the motherboard was starting to get a little senile with age, as I had to pull some pretty clever cr*p to get a display that didn't look like unscrambled Cable TV. My eventual solution was to add a graphics card.

Try booting with: puppy nomodeset pfix=vesa

It might get you a desktop on the newer pups.

Don, I am a noob and even not that. I totally fail at programming.
But even if I am bad try to get what I say :)

A friendly advice. Is it not very logical that if several distros
fail to get the graphics right that tells you and me that our
gear is kind of odd ball on the field :)

We have exclusive hardware. So what to expect.

Hey what if you try the US Army or was it Navy or Airforce or ???
That special software the soldiers use to log in in a secure way.

That one maybe find the right combination for your hardware.
Them have payed a lot of specialists to get it right each time :)

Lightweight Portable Security (LPS) is a Linux-based live CD
with a goal of allowing users to work on a computer
without the risk of exposing their credentials and private data
to malware, key loggers and other Internet-era ills.

It includes a minimal set of applications and utilities,
such as the Firefox web browser or an encryption wizard
for encrypting and decrypting personal files.
The live CD is a product produced by the United States of America's
Department of Defence and is part of that organization's Software Protection Initiative.

Ah now I get it. DoD that is a famous group. Them know how to boot. :)

So if them don't go directly to the desktop and just works then you
do know you have a hell of a difficult set up there.

On my Acer D250 it booted directly to a functional desktop.
No setting needed at all. Apart from Swedish.

Maybe this part could be needed vga=791 or does that not get recognixed by puppies when them boot?

This part is unique for every computer though.
kernel (hd0,2) maybe you are on USB or CD something?

what you said about not running as root is already starting to happen, there is an effort underway to make spot the default user, and all for no reason at all other than silencing those silly people who say root is bad.

Poor Don (Stripe). We have all been there.
I open a Window . . .
and let in some fresh air . . .

It saves the computer from the axe

Hi all

@rcrsn51, the reason I would like to use a later version with newer libs is that I usually install a copy of puppy onto the machine for people to try (without having to swap the disks), Have a look at dpup 5x9 you have to click on shutdown in the menu to bring a gui up with options on how you would like to close down (nothing to do with a save file).

@scottman I am used to altering puppy to work with different hardware (mainly sound and wireless) I never called Xorgwizard a nanny gui as it is one of the few that is needed to run automatically (that and the save file wizard), as with next pup and guy dog I can not get away with the user interface (my fault not igulders) and you cant even download rexbang (which is a beta anyway.) I do not need to run the preferences if I am recovering files, formatting a hard drive or using grub for dos to make a manual frugal install boot.

@starhawk Thanks for the offer of help but I can manage to sort things out (usually  ) at the moment I am hacking the slacko main sfs to see if I can remove the guis from the inside as there are no options to disable them elsewhere

@DaveS :wink:

@2byte I will try that but it means that I will have to add extra code to get around something that is supposed to make life easier.

@nooby last week I was working on several machines for friends, so apart from a couple of monitors it is not a hardware issue.
Just an observation that guis just seem to keep on getting added with no real benefit. (a hindrance in my case) especially the one for flash player. (if it is that important include it in the main sfs)

@sickgut: I wouldn't call those people silly (possibly misguided) as they are entitled to their opinion, and who knows they may be right?

@lobster thanks mate you know me too well

I initially made this post shortly after removing windows and installing puppy on 2 friends laptops at the same time, and it brought this matter to a head. sorry for any confusion/offense caused

Cheers

Don

Very funny pic 2byte. My sort of humour.
One of the reasons (after all these years)
that I still run from DVD is because if I bork the system
(tends not to happen with Lucid, Wary, Fatdog, Slacko or a mature Puppy)
'puppy pfix=ram' will fix it

Any important data goes on the HD and on the Cloud
(put stuff somewhere on the Net)

If I was sitting at computer ground zero after a cyber attack by 'the fish'
[enemies of the Lobsterians] I would go sit elsewhere and all would soon be well again . . . 8)

A great Sufi saying for bad times (and good):
This too will Pass
