Info Suggestion - Self-Updating Info |
|
Recently gcmartin suggested the idea of a single location for browsers, see
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=73169
This seems to me to be a forum improvement suggestion....but the idea of single locations to find things is a recurring theme
I'd like to suggest a broader concept - Self-Updating Info
Scenario, [we've all done it]
You are working away at something in your favourite puppy, when you discover you need some information....
A quick search through the available info, within puppy, finds the info, but it's out of date/no longer relevant/applicable and leaves you wanting more
The usual thing then, is the well-minded search, or a version of *oogle
...not very productive is it?
So, my suggestion, hopefully appealing to Barry K, devs, coders, experimenters alike, is...
A self-updating info widget thingy, that has an update icon, which will go to the repo, or somewhere similar, and find date indexed patches, or versioning data to update the info on your puppy, or point you to the web location where you can find it
Let me explain my thinking....I was using XP, on a box that needed updating, one of which was net framework....
After the update a new icon appeared in the menu, with full information about powershell and cli scripting - current and relevant, but large
Now I'm not suggesting adding info to bloat puppy's size, just, IF, a user adds info, it should stay up to date/relevant, and there should be a common location to find info downloads other than the wiki....IMHO
Is this doable?
Do you understand the idea?
Is it worth discussing?
Any thoughts/alternates?

Guys! Read what Aitch explain under this post first and then maybe
read my post too Your choice.
Old text follows
Just a naive thought.
Doesn't different puppies have different broswers as their default broswer.
So that way it becomes a bit more problematic than a general talk about
a particular browser because them behave different if them are in one
puppy compared to if them are in another puppy as second browser
using their own libraries maybe.
Then the added problem that some are pets while others are sfs loaded?
But apart from that I am all for it.

nooby...sorry mate, I think you missed the point
gcmartin's browser link is about one location, in the forum, whereas my suggestion is not browser specific, it's info specific, across all puppies/derivatives
I can think of many examples for you...
'What xxx.puppy boot code do I need to add with yyy.puppy already running frugally? [or something similar]
Other examples might be,
'How to find out what kernel my puppy has, so I know which nvidia driver to install?
that sort of info, or more...
I have a feeling it's database stuff, again....
