I've installed this on precise puppy and all is well.

however, my symlink gets replaced every time i restart my system. is this the default bahviour?

it means i have to redo the symlink from my HDD every time.

i'm on a frugal HDD install using encrypted personal storage.

cheers.

hi clifford,

no this isn't usual behavior, my symlink stays after reboot.

first off is the drive with the getiplayer folder mounted at boot as it will need to be for the link to work.

or if that's not the case then maybe it's something to do with the encrypted save, in which case maybe a script that deletes the old link and makes a new one in /root/Startup may solve it.

Code: Select all

#!/bin/sh
sleep 4
rm /root/getiplayer
ln -s /path/to/your/getiplayer/folder /root/getiplayer

Hi

Thanks for your reply.

I'm assuming it gets mounted as the system boots from it and it does appear mounted on the desktop although I'm not sure if it's immediate.

I can try the script, thank you.

More info on the drive it's an ssd samsung evo 120. the encryption is the save file itself that I chose on first save.

Cheers.

possibly ..... although once mounted the link should then work and in your case seems not to.

try the script ... you'll have to alter it so it points to your getiplayer folder location and also maybe adjust the sleep interval so the drive is mounted when it runs

ok, so i started again to test to see whether it was my encrypted save file and made a new normal save file but still no cigar.

ive attached an image of the permissions on my drives.

i also tried the script but it in startup made it executable but no luck.

i also edited it to simply delete the folder and ran it there and then but nothing.

perplexed.

so after making the symlink from the getiplayer folder on the harddrive to /root and rebooting ,
do you then have a broken symlink to getiplayer in /root?

when you make the link do you choose the 'relative' or 'absolute' option? (maybe try the other option)

what seems to be happening is on reboot a fresh getiplayer folder is placed in root copying over the symlink version. so it now resides again in root.

i've just tried the absolute link (i was using relative) and still no good.

sorry for being very precise over this, its just i would imagine that if this is not working then my installation might not be correct.

just want to get it right.

cheers

problem fixed. i didnt do anything different apart from completely delete the getiplayer directory from root and then restart. it didnt reappear in root so i then symlinked it (relative) and now it works.

thanks for the advice while trying to sort this.

cheers

Hello Phil

Is there any chance of you being able to package the latest version of Get-Iplayer? It seems to be up to 2.91 now.

I have tried asking 2.83 to update itself but seems as though I would have to install the compiling tools for Puppy for the update to work and I'm afraid of breaking something the deeper I go into things I don't really understand :-)

Thanks for your work to maintain this handy addition to Puppy - it's a real shame the BBC have broken the older versions.

hi barkingmad,

it just needs the devx installed to update... what puppy are you using? full install or frugal?

Thanks Phil

I think I'd try it on Precise, I think 5.7, frugal install as that's the Pup I seem to use most now.

I guese it's time tried this so do you know where to get the devx file now as Barry's home pages don't have the downloads links since he steped back from puppy?

Thanks for your help

devx for precise is here http://ftp.nluug.nl/ibiblio/distributio ... ise-5.7.1/

once downloaded right click on it and choose 'sfs_load' and if it asks if you want to move it choose 'yes'

Thanks Phil

I'll give it a try when I have a little time. When I've got in a computer mess it's usually when I was rushing!

Hello

I thought I should report back for info.

I downloaded the Precise pet from the link in the first post of this thread, getting a file named as version 2.83. I installed it in Precise ran it and found the version reported as 2.91 and all seems to be working without needing to "check for updates" within the Get-Iplayer GUI. I did have the devx.sfs loaded when I insteed the pet.

EDIT. Further info for referance. I find that the devx.sfs needs to be loaded whenever Get-Iplayer is running otherwise functions like search fail with errors about compile failed etc. As long as the devx is present all seems well.

Hope these notes might be usefull

Will

The filehost, copy.com, seems to be no more, confirmed at the site...
Copy was discontinued on May 1, 2016
Although I realise this topic is now very old, is anyone able to re-up the files in OP's post, and update the links here, please?
(Specifically seeking the .pet file for installation in wary 5.5)

Thanks in advance if you can help.

Got a few questions for ya..

Have you ever compiled a program under Linux?

Are you familiar with Perl or CPAN?

If you open a shell and ask "which cpan", does it return >> /usr/bin/cpan?

Granted, you may be asking too much of poor'ol 5.5?

I almost think a smart phone would be the right choice in your shoes..

Hey, how about that.. I found something that *appears* to work, though I need your input..

Semme, sorry for the delay,
answers...

1) No

2) No, though I've heard of Perl, think get_iplayer and certain other programs iuse it in .pet installs?

3)

Code: Select all

# which cpan
#
That's all I get!

4) I've never found Wary to be wanting before, and it, Lupu 5.28, Precise 5.71, (and AntiX MX-14) are the most recent flavours which work comfortably on my ancient hardware. Get-iplayer runs perfectly well on a daily basis on Precise (with devx loaded) and AntiX, and I've no reason to expect it wouldn't also on Wary.

5) I don't really understand what you're asking/saying here, but I don't normally allow my smart phone data permissions, for varioius reasons, so have no plans ever to use it online.
(Anyhow wouldn't the storage limitations be a serious hindrance to trying to use get_iplayer on a phone?)

Thanks for your interest.
