Subject description: Puppy like OS based on Arch Linux

I've managed to get a working build system (package of scripts) that will create a Puppy like OS based on Arch Linux. The resulting system is meant to be installed to a USB drive, although there is a method to do a frugal hard drive install. Both feature persistent storage.

The download below is not a distro, rather it is a series of scripts that will allow you to build your own. It was inspired by Woof, and as such it will download all the Arch Linux packages you specify, mash them all together into an ISO, and then write the ISO to a USB drive or to a previously prepared partition on a hard drive.

This is not Woof, and it is not really a Puppy (so if this is too far off topic someone in authority please delete), but the OS you end up with is, I think, a reasonable imitation.

My overriding design goal was to take the packages from the Arch repositories and use them as is with no modification. Naturally the result is quite a bit fatter than a Puppy (about 360 MB for base packages, graphical desktop, and internet). That is a trade off I'm willing to make.

The second design goal was that I did want it to be something like a Puppy. As such it is possible to drop PET files into the build, again without modification. I've included XSoldier-1.4.pet in the example build to show how it is done. I originally tried PMusic, but I had problems running it (actually running was fine, making it stop was the problem) so there may be some dependency issues to work out if you want to drop in some of the more complicated PET's.

Inside the tar.gz file there is a "How To" in both PDF and OpenOffice formats that should walk you through the process. The build will be easiest if you have an Arch or Arch based system already on your computer (need access to pacman), however it is possible to boot from an Arch Live CD and build from that. DIrections are provided.

I think that is about it. Hope somebody out there finds some use in this.
