Xsane and HP printer/scanner

#1 Post by glene77is »

Installed numerous Puppy Linuxes,
now I want to operate a HP C3100 All-in-One Printer/Scanner.

Using Lupu 528, frugal install.
CUPS has good install for HP C3100 printer/scanner.
Have downloaded hplip and hplip-data, and Xsane utility files.

HP C3100 Printer section works ok, as before.
Scanner section is not detected.

Any suggestions ?

rcrsn51,

Puppy Package Manager
------------------------
hplip_3.10.2
hplip-data_3.10.2
sane-utils_1.0.20
------------------------

After research on forum, and HP, the hplip series was downloaded, and succcessful in the past. The sane util is an attempt to get additional data for Xsane to work.

In testing, I access the "Control" icon (top-hat) and Pup-Control (PCP) comes up. Then select "Hardware" tab, then select "Scanner" button. A text window pops up, reading
"The list of supported drivers is in text file /etc/sane.d/dll.conf. When Xsane starts, your scanner ... should be auto detected..." In the past, Xsane would begin running normally.

Using
Puppy Package Manager
downloaded:
------------------------
hplip_3.10.2
hplip-data_3.10.2
sane-utils_1.0.20
--------------------------

Also run Xsane from command terminal.
"xsane"
which will initiate the same text window indicating a search
and a popup with the results.

Thanks.

I can't comment on packages that are coming out of the Lupu repo. But the hplip_scan package from here has been tested successfully with several Photosmart models.

I've had the same problem with XSane (Puppy 5.2.8, frugal install on an HP a800n) detecting my scanner/printer, Brother MFC-3240C. When I click "usb", my scanner is not detected. With CUPS, my printer is detected.

I can't remember, but maybe it was 5.1.1 on another computer, Dell Dimensions 8800, that XSane worked with my all-in-one, which is an HP photosmart 4300 series. However, I think t hat 5.2 and higher failed to detect it. I'll have to try 5.1.1 again on that computer in my office.

What printer and scanner driver packages did you install?

If you need help with Brother models, you should post here.

rscrn51,
Thanks.
Checked back on my Lupu 525 installations, and scanner was picked up fine.
Used the same downloaded files. Careful to note the filenames.
So, for now, I've alterd the menu.lst to point to Lupu_525. :!:

Lupu_528 will be a 'test' install until something works out.
Plan to check further, as I know there will be more upgrades of Lupu.
Do plan to pick up on this, on Saturday.

As always, your suggestions, and URLs have merit. :D
Obviously, you have been around the tree more than once !

Noticed that 525 allowed the install of the simple Sane application, .
which some folks prefer.

Lupu already has all the SANE content that you need to run a scanner. You shouldn't need to download anything else. What is the sane-utils package giving you?

rcrsn51,

Have the data.
" simple-scan (1.0.2-0ubuntu1) " via Puppy Package Manager.
Standard application, not an additional package of utilities.
Lupu 525 works with this, for the HP scanner.

I tried the HP scanner pet you linked but I still can't get sane (sane-find-scanner) to find anything.
lsusb shows the device *not very discriptive but its the correct vendor id and model 03f0:8f11 (An HP Photosmart Prem C310) and CUPs had no problem detecting it as a printer (connected by USB) and printing. It even networks the printer part fine. Just no detection of it for scanning.

I'm kind of lost with how the driver(s) work. Is the CUPs driver the overall driver for printing and scanning? By that I am wondering if one works the other ought to? Or is it totally different drivers etc.

I tried peasyscan but it also fails to find the scanner.

BTW - I'm using a fresh install of lucid 5.2.8

btw this might have something to do with it I'm having problems with a Logitech C210 camera which worked fine with lucid 5.11 it sees the camera but all I can get is a bright blue screen.

I tried the hplip from the puppy package manager but I'm totally lost with that. It seems to download a ton of stuff but I'm such a noob I have no idea how to access any of it to do anything.

Any socks over the head greatly appreciated...

James,
Sounds like you are doing the right things.
Download ALL the hplip files for your 5.28.

But, I am still using 5.25, and it is very productive.

Sept 25, 2012 test for Puppy 5.28, XSane, HP all-in-one C3100.

Trying Puppy 5.28 again, still with the HP all-in-one C3100.
Installed FRUGAL on a Pen-Drive (16G),
with attached main HD Transcend (320G).

Using Lupu 528, frugal install.
CUPS has good install for HP C3100 printer/scanner.
Have downloaded hplip and hplip-data, and Xsane utility files.
Installed pet pet-HPLIP_scan-3.11.10.pet, which works on Puppy 5.25.

HP C3100 Printer section works ok, as before.
sane-find-scanner finds the printer/scanner.
XSane is not detecting printer/scanner, yet.

Installed pet for pet_hplip_print-3.12.9
Installed pet for pet_hplip_scan-3.12.9

sane-find-scanner finds the printer/scanner. :D
Xsane FINDS the printer/scanner. :D

rcrsn51 , Thank you.

Glad to help. But I can't think of any reason why 3.11.10 would work in Lupu 525, but NOT work in 528. Again, my hplip_scan package is self-contained - you don't need to download anything else, unless you want Simple Scan. There is a PET available for it somewhere in the forum.

FWIW, I notice that james186282 above reports a scanning problem with his C310. The latest release of HPLIP has patches for that model, so 3.12.9 might work for him.
