Can't run Ardour/Jack Lucid Lynx Package!!

#1 Post by escape »

Hi,
--I'm nubee to puppy as well as linux. I'm using Lucid Puppy 5.2.8 from live CD, using lupu save file.
--I want to install Ardour n Jack. There r no .pet/sfs package for these softwares.
--There r dotpup(jack)/lucid lynx(both) package avillable. I've installed dotpuphandler-0.0.4-2.pet to use .pup packages. Tried to install JACK-Qjackctl.pup but it didn't work.
--Installed "qjackctl_0.3.4-0ubuntu4_i386.deb + ardour_2.8.6-1_i386.deb" for lucid lynx. When clicking the menu items nothing is happening as I've clicked nothing.
Please help me.

Hi escape!

Actually I'm linux noob as well, but I'm curious by nature, so I tried to find out what can be done with this Ardour n Jack stuff.
Hope this will help you.

Here are steps I made to establish these apps.
(Everything was done with Lucid Puppy 5.2.8 clean frugal install with 512MB lupusave.2fs)

0. Enter Puppy Package manager -> Configure package manager -> check Ubuntu repositories -> OK -> restart PPM

1. Type ardour into 'find' field, will find ardour_2.8.6-1 -> click on it -> Examine dependencies -> Download-and-install selected packages -> Download packages, OK and so on...

2. Type qjack into 'find' field, will find qjackctl_0.3.4 -> click on it -> Examine dependencies -> Download-and install selected packages -> Download and so on...

3. RESTART PPM!!! *

4. Type libjack into 'find' field, will find libjack0.118+svn3796 -> click on it -> Install libjack... -> and so on...

5. Type libgmp into 'find' field, will find libgmp3c_4.3.2+dfsg -> click on it -> Install... -> and so on...

6. Run Ardour from Menu -> Multimedia -> Ardour GTK2

* Step 3 is necessary, because without restarting PPM will find completely different package: "libjackasyn0_0.11" instead of "libjack0.118+svn3796"... Strange...

As you can see it works, but I cannot guarantee that all functions are ok - I never fiddled with these apps before...

Greetings!

Thank you for helping me. But 3 points.
1. Till I can't connect to net from puppy. (Ref: can't connect topic in the sub-sub category 'wireless' within the sub category'network' within hardware.)
2. I've downloaded all 4 lucid lynx .deb packages. Installed them in your order by clicking on them n clicking the OKs. But the result is still the same.

Why don't you use one of the puppy studios (f.e. puppy studio 3.3)? It has Ardour, Rosegarden, Audacity, the whole Jack Stuff and many more already installed.

The Kernel of Puppy Studio 3.3 is a RealTime-Kernel wich is recommended for using Jack Audio.

You can download the puppy studio 3.3 iso right here:

http://www.puppylinuxstuff.meownplanet. ... 3.3-rt.iso

Edited: Enter username: puppy and password: linux when prompted.

I cannot help you with this, unforetunately. Why don't you post this issue under appropriate section? Maybe someone will find a solution.

Did you download all necessary dependencies also? There's a large number of them (~40).
It would be very inconvenient to download them separately, so it's better to fix your net problem first and then do it 'automatically'...

Or, if you are not really attached to this specific Puppy [5.2.8] why wouldn't you follow RSH's suggestion - seems to be easiest way...

Thank you all for your help.
You guys are grrrrreat !!!
I've posted my net topic to
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=74203
on the next day of this one, is it not the right section for the topic? If not please guide me to find one.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I've an old 32 bit PC with only 512m of DDR RAM from which 32m gone to video sharing. So the remaining effective RAM is only 480m. Puppy Studio 3.3 needs min 512m to run. I've been primarily attracted to the 80m ram feature of Lucid Puppy 5.2.8. which runs on my PC with a blazing speed really! Ubuntu 10.10 doesn't runs on my PC...... erm....... OK........ It runs but takes only 45min (minutes, not seconds; Win XP SP3 2.5 min, Puppy 30 sec after finding lupu save file on HDD) to bootup.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I've heard that some distro called 'dyne:bolic ' (possibly not the newer version which is 1.6G DVD release, I'm talking 'bout 680m CD release) needs only 64m to run n with a RT kernel.

Hi escape.

I sent you PM regarding Ardour, but it's still in my outbox.
I hope that you at least visit this forum as a guest sometimes.
I didn't want to post this as 'public', because I doubt it could be useful for someone else, too.

Anyway, if you're still intrested setting up Ardour:
Since I still have all these files (Ardour & Jack + deps = 49 files), I made an archive of them and temporarily uploaded here:
[EDIT: dead link removed by me - SFR]
Just click on downloaded archive, extract all files and install one by one.
But again - I can hope only that everything will be 100% accurate.
It would be better if you install this stuff on clean instance of Puppy (puppy pfix=ram) first, just to see if everything works.
If something will go wrong, you won't need to uninstall them one by one (believe me - it's a nightmare  )

Let me know when you'll download it, then I'll remove it.
But try to make it before 29 Dec, because the link will expire that day anyway (it's a "nice feature" of ADrive non-premium account  ).

Greetings!

To me it was useful. I used an older version of jack (out of the muppy 008.3f files) and the newer one let's Ardour run - the older one doesn't. Thank you for posting these files. :D
I did a little work on these files and build two .pet files out of the ubuntu .deb files.

1. Ardour-2.8.6-1-i386
2. jack-0.3.4-0ubuntu4_i386

You can find them incl. some further Jack Audio Stuff right here:

Hi RSH, I didn't suppose, really :D
And thanks for a "little" work (49 .debs, phew  ) - your .pets work great for me (Lupu-528.004) and I believe escape will be satisfied, too.

Just downloaded n installed Ardour*.pet, it's working partially (because I didn't downloaded Jack). I'm sure that after RSH's jack*.pet ardour'll run perfectos.
Don't know that due to settings of my browser or something first few lines of RSH's download page is showing in Italian/German language.

The link above, posted by RSH, leads to German subsection of this forum.
And there are links to MediaFire site - you downloaded Ardour from there, so what is the problem with downloading Jack? 8)
Direct link to RSH's Jack .pets: http://www.mediafire.com/?66qbhr51etstp

Escape, have you looked at Menu -> Multimedia -> mhWaveEdit audio recorder/editor? It is surprisingly competent at editing all kinds of audio files and saving them as other kinds of files.

Yes, this is true. Most of the time i use mhwaveedit - especially if i have to save .au files.

But mhwaveedit is unable to edit more than 1 track at the time. If i am recording and editing multiple audiotracks i use audacity, because this is the first open source audio editor that i have had worked with (it was an windows version).

Later i used audacity (1.3.2) in the german muppy 08.3f system.

I did never try ardour.

YYYYYYYYYYYYEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!!!
You people are martian or what?
How do you find(SFR) and combine(RSH) such huge collection of files?
Thank you all very much.
Now at last Ardour is running on my computer........ AAHHHH........
My story as follows:
1. I've downloaded RSHs Ardour*.pet n installed. It started running but not fully as it needs jack.
2. In between I've fixed my net connection n downloaded RSHs Jack*.pet from my lupu n installed it. Jack started running but Ardour started to fail to run. EEK! After clicking on menu>multimedia>Ardour GTK2 just nothing happening(as I did clicked on an empty space on desktop, just menu list disappears).
3. On clicking green start button of jack it immediately stopping and a failure notice appears. After lots of click n head-scratching I found that as my default mixer is using one of my main audio interface so it can't be used by jack.
4. I switched jack to my another interface and now it can be started.
5. After starting jack ardour started running. Everything can be done on it. But........ there is no sound out. 2nd EEEEEEK!
6. I tried every possible change of settings(as per me), patchbay n connections and obviously many liters of coffee with lots of head-scratching. But.......... no sound...........
7. Started menu>setup>alsa sound wizard after completion n hearing dual woof in 8000k mono.............. ardour started sounding....... AAAHHHH.......
8. I'm happy with my ardour which still can't mute track by pressing mute on the track. You have to disconnect that track from jack to mute. HA!HA!HA!HA!HA!HA!HA!HA!HA!HA!HA!..............

Hi escape, good to see your problem is finally solved :)

BTW, one of the first things I noticed after launching Ardour was that this 'mute' button doesn't work,
but I figured out how to "fix" it (I hope it will work for you also).

On the other hand I see that you're in some way accustomed to this tiny "bug",
and I wouldn't want to spoil your habits, so I wrote the solution backwards (so you can use it or not  ):

Lemme tell ya 1 story. A Sultan (Arabian King) was too ill he's almost goin' to die. All local Hakim (Arab Doc.) failed to do anything. 1 foreigner Hakim came n told, that, I can cure ya. He prescribed n before goin told "ya mustn't think of camel during taking ma medicine otherwise It'll not work." The king isn't anyway interested in camel but each time he starts to take the medicine he thinks of the Hakim's instruction so obviously he thinks of the camel. The medicine didn't worked n he died.
Same thing happened with your reverse instruction.
Thanks anyway.

You have to disconnect that track from jack to mute.
You should also be able to play and record etc. in ardour using the jack buttons.

It should lead everything, that is connected. I don't know if it synchronizes several audio programs. But it should be possible. That's why Jack is Jack (afaik). Try this.

By the way: i am not a martian. I am a newly called "Cannibal" :D
