PostPosted: Tue 20 Dec 2011, 12:52    Post subject:  language, encoding, installing programs

hi.
i recently install puppy from windows (with that installer), and i like it very much, very satisfied with speed, simplicity, design, funcionality, programs, just it's not wreally nice for people who see linux or computer first time.

well, i don't know two things, because i don't know anything about linux, and i'll thank you if someone answer:

1.how to make language to be ex-yugoslavian (bosnian, croatian, serbian, nevermind beacause it's the same language)? now i set this on start, but still everything is in english.

also when i watch some movie, all subtitles don't show non-english characters (žšđćč), i tried every possible combination in setting of subtitle in gnome player (unicode, utf-8, utf-16), but it doesn't work.

2. how to install some program in linux? i don't thing on predefined programs, it's easy and helpful, but, for example, i see some nice program on net, i download it, and.... what? hot to install this? i realise it's not like on windows, but also realise that don't know how to install.

please exlplain very, very simple.
thanks.

Welcome to the Puppy world!

What Puppy are you using? There are so many more puppies.
Most of them are english based, but there is a multilingual Wary, wary-511-01m.
http://shino.pos.to/linux/wary/

Or, you can add a language package to your Puppy.
There is lang_pack_all-0.9.sfs.
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=51702
Some additional applications provide their own translations as *_NLS.pet packages but not always contain slavian.

As for the additional applications, they are provided as .pet or .sfs prepaired for Puppy (.exe is prepaired for Windows, and etc.).
You can find some pets in the Puppy Package Manager, but many .pet and .sfs can be found on the net. There is a special topic in this forum:
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/index.php?f=63

one more question: how to open dvd that contains folders (directories)?

there are no movie or music on it, just there are folders (with various data).

i was trying but nothing, it can play films or anything, but when are folders on it (data dvd), i don't know how to open. my linux is lucid pupy.

Hi kocg,

Normally when the dvd is loaded, an icon will appear bottom left on your screen, where the drive icons are located. Just clicking that will open the file manager and show you the content of the dvd, the folders.

Welcome!

thanks bert.

i have the icon (image of disc, it says 'sr0') and when i left click - it begins gnome mplayer, and stops, and says:

'couln't open dvd device: /dev/dvd/ (No such a file or directory)'

do i have to change something, somewhere else? some settings?

but when the movie dvd is inside, everything is ok, film starts perfectly and everything.

only problem is when data dvd starts.

also, question about gnome mplayer -

1. it has everything i need, and i'm very satisfied. but, when i adjust everything, and make settings, and exit the player - all those settings are lost next time i run the player. how to save them (brightness, colour, size of subtitle and so on)?
3. and, there's no keyboard buttons that'd set subtitle delay (those in menu don't work).

sorry for so meny questions on this subject, but i'm moving from windows and everything on puppy is very nice and simple, and in the same time confusing cause english is not my native language and don't know linux at all. but i hope it will be ok in time, i remember that the same situation was when i started windows, i needed 3 months to learn basics Smile, hope for puppy 2 months would be enough.

cheers, and thank for the answers in advance

Zdravo Kocg.

I am from Bulgaria and use Cyrillic letters.
Our language are almost the identical so may be this will help you if you use Cyrillic too.
In Gnome player use :

Edit-Preferences-Language Settings-Default Subtitle Language-"your language"

Edit-Preferences-Language Settings-File Metadata Encoding-CP1251

Edit-Preferences-Subtitle File Encoding-CP1251.

Hope this helps.
Yordan.

ej jordan, zdravo.
yes, southslavic lagnguages are very similiar and this should work. however, in the mintime, in my gnome player cirilic subtitles started to show correctly, from no reason, with utf-8, and i'm ok now with that and don't want to touch anything for now. thaks anyway.
btw, just to ask how you save you 'video picture adjustment' in player, cause when i close it goes on default values.

another thing: i tried to insert cd with folders, and it shows correctly! but dvd don't wont, and in /mount/sr0 doesn't appeare nothing. but when insert movie dvd it starts to play. i don't have any idea what it could be, if someone has some thaught about this let say cause it's very important function.

Is your DVD has UDF filesystem?
If so, use this:
Code:
mount -t auto /dev/sr0 /mnt/sr0

Greetings!

No problem Very Happy

UDF stands for "Universal Disk Format", more to read here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Universal_Disk_Format

Open terminal window (click on "console" icon on your desktop) and type mount -t auto /dev/sr0 /mnt/sr0

It may help, works for me with UDF CDs/DVDs.

Greetings!

well... this code actually works. well done @sfr. you see how much results are better if you threat people like monkeys.

now, the only thing that is not good that - i have to copy this code in 'console' every time i insert dvd, to be able to be opened with folders. if would be the way to save this setting you provide would be nice?

but.. close enough, it's ok.

thanks!

But seriously, I'm relatively beginner in linux and Puppy, too.
Maybe this could be more convenient:

1. Navigate with ROX to some cozy place, eg. /root/
1a. Or just click "File" icon on your desktop.
2. Right click on empty space and choose: New -> Blank file and name it as "MountUDF" for example.
3. Left click on newly created file - will open in Geany.
4. Now enter this code:
Code:
#! /bin/sh
mount -t auto /dev/sr0 /mnt/sr0

5. Click "Save" and exit Geany.
6. Right click on that file again and choose: File 'MountUDF' -> Properties
7. Check all boxes under "Exec" and close.
8. Now drag'n'drop that file to desktop - shortcut will be created.

Every time you insert CD/DVD which doesn't work in a traditional way, just click that shortcut.

Hope this helps.

Take care man Cool
Greetings!
