Hm...

Playing Drums...

...or: why LazY Puppy has happen...

...or: why active develpoment of LazY Puppy has to come to an end...

Playing Drums is my job, my desire, my passion - as a teacher of playing drums as well as a drummer in bands and/or solo-artist. I do like also to play drums while listening to the "big musicans" like Zappa, Rush, Miles, BBKing, Iron Maiden, Blue Öyster Cult, Allan Holdsworth, Billy Cobham, Stanley Clarke, Bill Withers, Tool, CKY, DIO, Rainbow, Chickenfoot, Van Halen, Curtis Mayfield, Colosseum, David Lindley, Gary Moore, Steve Vai, Joe Satriani, Thin Lizzy, Derek Sherinian, Simon Phillips, Dave Weckl, Vinnie Colaiuta, Hooverphonic, Humble Pie, Imelda May, Jack Bruce, Jeff Silvertrust, Brecker Brothers plus more than 500 further musicans and Bands and also to play the drums free from any "leading"-stuff - alone by myself and totally sunken in the drumming-work and its sounds...

The "journey" while programming is not much different to the drumming-journey - but: it misses its physical component. So this could result in nervous up and down movement of a leg...

Playing Drums has been what i've ever searched for until i did explore it for myself at the age of 19 years.

As i did join the forum on 05. September 2011 i did stand in front to have to leave my drumming-room as a result of ugly behavior of a office company that claims to leave the house and all by the office company used rooms, if they could not get into and use my drumming-room for their own purposes.

So, without a job and without a "to-have-something-to-do" during the upcoming days and weeks (now months) i did decide to give some time to one of my several passions/hobbys - which has been then the muppy 08.3f.

Earlier i did work from June of 2007 to April of 2009, six days a week, 8 to 14 hours a day, to compose some new drum-solos to play a solo-concert and to create a dvd including some drum-solos and other artworks and music of me.

This would be something really new to me, because i did play concerts only as a drummer of a band - until then. So i started a whole lot of work (drumming-excesses) to learn to play ostinatos using the six (seven) different pedals of the drum kit by my feet and to play different rhythms and/or melodies using the upper drums and cymbals with my hands. Using a drum including 19 drums and 23 cymbals should make it possible to do things like that.

This concept is called ostinato-solo-drumming and it is created and invented by Terry Bozzio, formerly playing the drums in different Frank Zappa "Ensembles". His drum-kit is surely double-sized - since he has got more than 14 drums alone at the left side of his position behind the drum-kit.

So, from June of 2007 to April of 2009 i did compose ten different drum-solos - six of them did find its place on the dvd (not enough space); i did create the graphics for the dvd cover and the gui and did also program the events and actions if clicking on a link or a bitmap on the dvd gui using a integrated script language of the gui-builder; i did hurt the ring-finder of my left hand while mounting some light onto the walls of the drumming-room, to have enough light to be able to record the drum-solos to video and as a result i could not play drums for about six weeks until three weeks before the concert would happen etc.pp. - short story: each and every little detail -including burning the litescribe dvd's- has been done by myself (except cutting the covers and "building" the needed "nightly-drumming-excess-food", which has been "build" by my Augenstern; she also likes to play drums).

In between Mai of 2009 and September 2011 i did lost my drumming-room twice and once the band did split because of differences in priorities of a band -second short story: i could not trust them (the 2 other musicans of the 3-guy-band, Satriani-Cover) as a result of something happened. Enough, details in the German forum named, but not really necessary in here.

The dvd cover (front and back)

LazY Puppy, started as a "vision" of a puppy linux newbie looks to me now as a really creative result of the work to turn a big bunch of SHIT that can be called Life-Part-Experience-Worthies into something that smells a bit more comfortable than this big bunch of SHIT.

Successfully DONE!

By now, LazY Puppy 2.0.2 Final, Build 0.0.2 seems to be stable and made really fine, there has been offered a new option to get a new drumming-room. We did get the OK and a pre-contract also - so it would just need a few days to get into that room and to setup the drum-kit. Though it will take weeks to have everything connected and ready for a daily use.

And it needs also time to get back my coordinated-independence, my inspiration and ability to play my drum-solos and/or to make unleaded improvisations on the drum-kit.

Interested in creative drumming?
A Drumsolo about 8 minutes length, stored at Mediafire.

My wish would be to have some LazY Puppy specials like SFS P.L.U.S. running in other puppies, but this will not happen (i believe). I can't do this and if another one is willing to do so? Hm, i doubt...

So, i want to say thanks for all the help, to make this outstanding puppy derivative possible and want to wish a lot of fun and success also, while using LazY Puppy.

For those of you who wants to work on their own version i do attach the complete overview of the LazY Puppy menu categories (the names used for the "Categories="-entry of a .desktop file). It is a htm file, so just remove the .gz.

Ok,

it's done. Contract for the drumming-room is signed and we got the keys as well. It is a nice, clean and dry room, far away from every beer-drinking musician scene, and it has got toilets for women and men and also a little Out house. Amazing...

Meanwhile i have been busy working on my own version of LazY Puppy. The result is a iso sized 149 mb.

All of the bigger applications like aqualung, imagemagick, pwidgets etc. are removed and converted to sfs. JWM is totally removed. IceWM and FbPanel are moved to the StArtLPx2_Extension.sfs. So, the basic LazY Puppy OS has now only openbox (look at screenshot)

All Gtk-, Icon- and Openbox-Themes are moved to StArtLPx2_Extension.sfs as well and also more than 300 icons from /usr/share/pixmaps.

Current Screenshot of LazY Puppy Multimediastudio Pro

At forum thread Utilities there is a simplified version of the LazY Puppy Run-Script-Builder (LP2-SFS-AutoScript) available for the use in other puppies. You need to install sfs_load-1.9.x!

No Download available for LazY Puppy Multimediastudio Pro! This is just an Information - for those who are interested and to let you know, what is still possible on refining LazY Puppy.

but you will be releasing an iso of this studio soon right...?

And thanks for all the work you have put into this puppy. Quite a masterpiece. You made me laugh with your reference to the "nightly-drumming-excess-food". Sounds like there might be a recipe book coming out soon??

Hhmm...

...No.

This Version is especially for my own use and it is also modified in this way. You and every other non-german-language-user will not get happy on this version, because every modifications i've made is only made using German language. Also there are modifications for my own use made, that are unsuitable for other German users as well - so, there will also not be a new German version of LazY Puppy.

If you want to make the LazY Puppy a bit smaller by yourself, i can upload the newly created sfs files, so you can see, what files are to be removed - but i recommend: try to be happy with LazY Puppy as it is.

If there will be any new work on LazY Puppy 2.0.2 Final to publish, this will surely not happen within the year 2012. This is the only promise, i can make.
greengeek wrote:And thanks for all the work you have put into this puppy. Quite a masterpiece.
Yes, i do think too, it is a masterpiece. But it would not be here without help and suggestions from lots of members of this forum. Me one has just been the lucky person, who was allowed to do the work on this "masterpiece" - i do use it every day as my main OS!
greengeek wrote:You made me laugh with your reference to the "nightly-drumming-excess-food". Sounds like there might be a recipe book coming out soon??

That's all usual stuff, so: no recipe book on the way.

---

Report:

The (my private) new iso is sized 126 MB and the StArtLPx2.sfs is now sized 122 MB. It boots on my computer within 14 seconds from finding the StArtLPx2.sfs until the desktop is shown and ready to use.

It is now faster and even smaller as the original lucid 528-4!!!

HI,

it looks like there are some confusions on the german forum about removing JWM from my personal (only for my private use) LazY Puppy Edition (Details posted here) - so, i just want to make clear:

Each and every downloadable version of LazY Puppy do still containing JWM, IceWM, Openbox and the FbPanel!

Hi.

Thanks to don570 and SFR i could release now a feature, that is missed in LazY Puppy 2.0.2 Final.

This one (what is missed) is an option to remove Run-Scripts and its symbolic links from the system from within the Run-Script-GUI (Menu LazY Puppy). The attached PET makes an update to the Run-Script-GUI to be able to remove Run-Scripts and its symbolic links from the system from within the Run-Script-GUI. This could be necessary if you choose to use a newer version of a program that has already a Run-Script in the system - and it has to be done manually (until now).

You can find the PET in the German Forum

Note: this is not a bug fix!

Although I do not like drumming at all, I dld your solo.

Must say I was impressed, quite melodious. And boy what a big installation, did not know they existed.

Do I understand well that you are giving concerts only with drumming ? no other instruments ?

Thank you very much.
nancy reagan wrote:And boy what a big installation, did not know they existed.
Yes, for those who did never see such drum-kits it might be a big installation. But to me it's just a small drum-kit. If you want to see a really big installation of a drum-kit, go to youtube and search for Terry Bozzio - this is what i do call a big installation.
nancy reagan wrote:Do I understand well that you are giving concerts only with drumming ? no other instruments ?
Yes, i did so in the past and i hope i can do this again in the future. But first i have to do some more work on the drumming-room (maybe one more week) and then (after setting up the drum-kit again) to do a lot of practice. I did not play the drums for the last nine months.

Also it is hard to get contracts for such concerts because i do not have a endorsement with one of the big drum companies, which is the necessary "must have" to play on drum festivals etc. All the big drummers do have endorsements with big drum, cymbals and stick companies.

So, it looks like it is as everywhere: the money (and the "free" instruments as well) goes to where the money is...

...no matter how good you are and/or what you do.

Hallo Rainer,

gibt es eigentlich noch irgendwo eine Downloadmöglichkeit für deine verschiedenen *.sfs?
Gibt es ein virtualbox.sfs?
Hast du schon mal XP in virtualbox laufen lassen?
Hast du eine Ahnung wie groß das XP-System dann ist?

Hi.

User der-schutzhund did ask for Virtualbox and additional downloads for the LazY Puppy files. I do answer this in the German Forum.

I did never hear from John Stanier but will have a look.

There are lots of great drummers to watch on youtube. Some of them do not only drumming but doing fantastic stuff with the arms/sticks while drumming. I would recommend to search for Steve Moore (Video: Sharp Dressed Man). The camera guy just wanted to set the focus on the guitar player (the solo) but did see then it could be more interesting to keep the focus on the drummer - and he was right!

So, guitarists, bass players and singers as well are just posers. The pianists and keyboarders are just hooked on the place. But the drummers are always the workers! And there is not much more fun than to watch great guys working!

But, hey! What do i say. You are on the puppy linux forum and so you should know this already!

---

Ok.

It is done.

The drumming room is prepared to set up the drum-kit and to get everything connected like microphones, mixer, computer and video camera. From now on i am recently DRUMMING.

---

This might be interesting for LazY Puppy users (but not only) as well.

Thanks to all

Hi.

After posting my previous post i did just surf around the forum awhile and then did found a very useful script by stu90.

Automated Frugal Install

As always it is "only" a script, which means, you have to save it somewhere and execute it by clicking on the script or using the terminal.

As always i did learn from scripts by stu90 and so i did learn again from this script.

I could not resist to do some work on this script - even though i do not use other puppies and there would be less need for me to use this script (but i found it very very useful).

I did made several changes and modifications and rewrote some parts as well - and so by now it

- has a complete new created GUI
- has a menu entry (in menu utility)
- is localized (de & en)
- does not longer stuck on /mnt/home
- gives option to add menu entry for Grub4DOS
- can handle path names with spaces
- can be choosed which files to install (all files or just the needed ones)
- can send menu.lst to defaulttexteditor to edit after adding menu entry

Image

AFI-1.0 lets you do a frugal install of any puppy you want to by grabbing the files from a iso file.

You can find the .pet and also the .sfs here.

Hi.

You like to switch between different Desktop Icon Themes (Icon Switcher) and/or Window Managers (WM Switcher)?

What would you say, to be able to switch between different System Sound Themes?

Here comes the SoundSwitcher-0.1.

It can be used in LazY Puppy as well as in other Puppies (if the directory /usr/share/audio and its containing Sound Files are available).

The attached .pet (which you can find here) installs SoundSwitcher-0.1 and three different System Sound Themes. Theme 1 is the Lucid Puppy Sound Theme, Theme 2 is the LazY Puppy Sound Theme (taken from my private Version of LazY Puppy) and Theme 3 is an empty Theme to set no sounds for use (i like it that way most).

You can find these Themes and/or install your own user defined Sound Themes in /usr/share/audio-themes. After changing a Sound Theme, you can play the file 2barks.au from within the gui, to hear immediately to what you have changed the sounds.

Hope you like it.

Hi.

I have renamed/translated all entries in /root/.config/rox.sourceforge.net/OpenWith in my private version of LazY Puppy. To make it a bit easier and more comfortable i did wrote a program for this kind of work.

Hi.

I have hurt my fingers, so i could not play the drums yesterday. I did use the free time to make an update of the LazY Puppy RunScript-Builder (SFS-AutoScript). It is now possible to create automatically RunScripts from SFS-Files in a directory by only one single right-click on the directory - the sfs files have to be already converted to LazY Puppy. I have created RunScripts from 202 SFS-Files in one directory.

Install the .pet, do a right-click on the directory containing the sfs files and choose LP2-SFS-AutoScript-(Batch). Then drink some coffee.

It saves now its preferences in a file so the batch function runs using the same preferences for all sfs files.

To set the preferences in front of running the batch function, do a right-click on a sfs file, set your preferences and close the gui. Preferences are always saved.

It has a new parameter to let an sfs only load and run at pupmode 5 (no save file - i need and use this for GIMP 2.7.3)

You can find the .pet here
