Could we perhaps move away from the nomenclature of sickgut's project and the "what ifs" of search engine associations (e.g., what would happen if someone typo'd "Justin Beaver Linux" etc), draw a line in the sand and focus again on the rather more pristine intentions that he clearly stated from the very outset? I think the continued feedback to the OP is acknowledgment that his aims are worthwhile and supported in principle and spirit - even though on some levels the help has been hard to come by. Good on you, sickgut and saintless.

I dont understand why it even matters what an OS is called when its in the development stages. Starwars was called blue harvest when it was being made.

i do intend to introduce a debranding option, brand stripper or bleacher you might like to call it. At the click of a button the cat pussy meow etc names all disapear and then you are left with the standard debian names for everything and a bare background and splash boot screen if your using a usb or hdd install.

pussy keeps its customness out of the way in /scripts. This is a non standard debian dir so it never gets touched at all when removing or adding things. The idea here is that any and all custom pussy things reside here and everywhere else on the filesystem where they are needed, they simply symlink back to /scripts. Its quite possible to remove all symlinks and scripts that are uniquely pussy and then be left with a slimmed debian system.

All this about the name is pretty funny and reminds me of the controversy surrounding DSL (Damn Small Linux).

Anyways, being in the way top of the distros doesn't necessarily mean the all the packages work smooth. I've been messing around with Ubuntu lately and found it to be buggy when attempting to install certain packages, plus certain versions of the o.s. just seem more buggy as they seem to have a need to put out new versions regularly instead of fixing older versions. You can't even find any software at all for a 3 year old version, even if it is pretty stable.

Also once this process is working ok, there will be a "rebranding" wizard, like a linear process of filling in a few custom things, like start menu icon or text, rename background icons etc, also the wizard would ask to provide a new background and also boot splash screen etc, rename boot options etc and usernames/ accounts and passwords for the purpose of providing server functionality.

This will open the distro to be useful to OEMs, computer stores and even businesses that just use alot of computers who would like to have their own branded and recognizable operating system.

Yet another reason i dont really care about the initial name or its impression much, not that i dont like the Pussy name i think its great and im not gonna change it to something lame just to please some people who dont even use it.

This distro has never been about fancy themes and graphical ideas and things are left as simple and untouched as possible so that the user can customize things themselves or this would all be dealt with when the rebranding feature is executed.

There is no one theme that anyone using any OS can agree on, what one person thinks is spiffy will make another puke. Pussy is unpolished intentionally atleast until all the technical issues are solved/ fixed/ added. Only then will Pussy be subjected to a round of polishing. In the meantime as far as a development plan goes i think graphical polishing so early Pussies infancy will distract from technical advancement and is pointless because due to said technical advancements, may have to be overhauled again anyway due to changing icons, WM's, file managers, console environment etc etc.

Well...it IS a great name....and many of us will live to regret not having taken advantage of opportunities when Pussy was right here for all of us. Fortunately, Pussy will be in all our local stores and businesses fairly soon, so all is not lost. I'm hoping it will happen before I'm too old to truly appreciate what you are offering. I'm thinking, Pussy in my cell phone, Pussy in my car...who knows where it will all end.

Oh wow!

Sickgut, I've only just seen this thread, and already 4 pages and over 2 weeks....

You will always be remembered by many as the dev who at least tried to address what many know needs addressing.....the packaging issue

There have been threads about it before, and no doubt, will be again
noryb09 has a current thread, however no consensus

http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=75383

Jemimah probably understands better than most, based on her comments, that it is the way it is, because there isn't a great focus of concern, from users and devs alike, and Barry hasn't seen a need/been under political pressure to change things - thus the status quo of a flawed package system.....but your creation, whilst not being a puppy, certainly had most of the ingredients that people like puppy for, - small fast, easy to use...good oob experience, supported and documented....for a one-man band....ticks the right boxes :D good job!
Controversy attracts, whether people like it or not, so to my mind the name is OK, and does what it was supposed to

You had good support from saintless at puppylinux.info, and are always welcome there, as well as here

puppy plays well with pussy and vice versa....as there was no real fight broke out....just maybe that you had [high] hopes of devs, as many have

....but as we all know, if it's not fun.....is the byword

good luck with whatever you get involved in, and hope to see you often

Aitch :)

there is debate in the ubuntu community about the name of their next release, aparently perty pussy or pretty pussy is one of the favourites.

im going to laugh so goddamn much if this name gets chosen, the 3rd most popular OS in the world, being named the same thing or similar to what ive been flamed for. i wonder if the people who sent me messages saying they wouldnt dare use pussy at home because they have grandchildren/ children will shun ubuntu the same way, im guessing not as its ubuntu and thety cant do any wrong.

no doubt if this name gets chosen officially for ubuntus next release then people will see pussy and automatically think we copied them

the world just gets more strange

um....unlikely. I think they're smarter than that.

I like Pretty Pussy because then you can say you downloaded Pussy. Please do this with a straight face.

I am sure that there are really great names dealing with Penguins, this is Linux after all.

There is a bunch of other animals with the initial P.

Are you really sure that our intent where to flame you?
Is it not more likely that we had all the best intent and
only wanted to prevent a public relation scenario?

Ubuntu may "pull it" using that name. You don't have their
resources to fight for the name. Ubuntu most likely have.

I don't trust we flamed you. Could you not see it as friendly help
to get a perspective from many angles? I chose to see it that way.

if you can make a tiny, CLI only apt-get supported pussy-based distro,
then it would make a fantastic 'underdog' linux...

This is not to imply that "Pussy" is mainly associated with something sexual or deviant....just because google searches bring up a bunch of porn.

Ask any school-age kid in America what Pussy means, and they'll tell you it's something they don't want to be. It's most commonly associated with being weak, ineffectual, cowardly. I firmly believe that somone should have the absolute right to name their own distro after something they believe provides insight into what their work is all about, rather than worrying about perverted associations noted by google searches.

Getting apt-get to work with busybox might be a path toward a very small
CLI based distro being built?

Pussy is not Puppy and Subito is not Puppy either.

But both Pussy and Subito have multi user capability and
both can be root and both can do frugal install

sadly Iguleder has decided to not include ntfs-3g in the iso
even if one can install it later if one know how to. But it is possible.

So both Pussy and Subito has potential to be whatever one like
although not a pussy. Roar-ng can make a Puppy? At least the older
version could but the newer seems to have cut woof compatibility?

I find both projects very interesting.
