Nvidia and AMD (formerly ATI) are added to the drivers tab in slickpet, please test. There is a gui to unload nouveau and also works from console. More eyecandy from futwerk 15M d09e37f9bc72dce6b075f6d22544e4e4

_____________

Please offer mainly feedback about your connection experience, drivers for your HW, that type of thing, app updates are basic arithmetic, not concerning us right now, so this is ALPHA testing, very smartly moving to BETA, then RC and RELEASE.

Perhaps warranting some concern is JWM, it is updated to svn-578, and is carrying technosaurus' jwm_tools, PPM (aka petget) is patched to gain the advantage :) .

Slacko 5.3x<onwards> ..testing

#4 Post by Billtoo »

I did a manual frugal install of 5.3.1.1 to my emachines D620 laptop.
When I went to setup the network connection no interfaces were
showing, I loaded the broadcom module.
I used Dougal's network wizard to set up the wireless connection,
frisbee can't see any interfaces.
The network wizard needs to be rerun every bootup.
I found out that the mesa pet doesn't work so removed it.
I ran xorgwizard and chose probe and got the radeon driver.
I installed a seamonkey 2.6.1 pet that I have and Umplayer, both work
fine.
I got a strange result when I ran the CPU frequency scaling tool (no
options available) so exited out of that.

Downloaded and actually burned a cd. Quick test live pfix=ram on my main Athlon XP box.... really quick test. No nic driver.
8139too. RealTek RTL-8139.
Otherwise, sound and display were working and correct.

For now, I'll just try on another box a little later.

Code: Select all

tulip : Digital 21*4* Tulip ethernet driver
Pemasu was missing this in Exprimo k-3.10 also.

I booted on my most used computer.
Acer D250 which is a 10" Netbook.
Intel Atom N270 CPU and Intel graphics
and as typical it trusted that I wanted
1024 x 600 instead of 1024 x 768 because
the internal screen has that format 16:9
while the external screen which I use for my poor old eyes
have 4:3 format and there 1024 x 600 leave a black border
and 1024 x 768 looks just right so that is the preferred one.

So now the only way to get 1024 x 768 would be to delete the
set up that was made automatically by editing it out if the xorg.conf

I write from a booted Slacko5311 now and it find my LAN instantly.

It did give some boot up comment that was too fast for me to read.
Maybe it is in the log? I take a look. and get back if I find it.

Hope that report helps.

Ooops don't take this personally. I do trust I know why it has
DeaMonkey instead of Firefox but I do prefer FF.

so can one not have Seamonkey as one option among many
browsers in quickpet and have some small very small browser
that tells how one do such a choice? Now this SM will be with me
forever even if it is hidden?

is this important?

xerrs.log says:
/usr/bin/jwm
JWM: warning: /root/.jwmrc[321]: invalid tag in Active: Corner
JWM: warning: /root/.jwmrc[327]: invalid tag in Inactive: Corner

Really ready for lunch now. Zero for three.Tried on the faithful quad-core, No go.Onboard Nvidia ethernet.

Code: Select all

Nvidia MCP61 ethernet (rev a2) forcedeth driver
Booted to a black screen, used three-finger-salute to get to xorgwizard and desired 1368x768 resolution with nv driver.Sound worked.

Frugal installation to an ext4 partition on Dell Inspiron Laptop. Initial boot was flawless and went directly to the desktop. :D

Problems so far: :(

1. Numlock selection is no longer available.

2. Wifi connections are not recognized by any of the network tools.

Cheers,
Jim

Thanks for reports.

Nooby, when you boot (@pfix=ram) I want you to try something, in a terminal type "jwm -restart", tell me if that fixes your 1024x758 screen. Oh, those messages are very minor. Thanks.

James, 0 for 3 eh? I'm 3 for 3 with ethernet, oh well, looks like a kernel shortcoming. Probably more intriguing is the black screen. Maybe I should re-introduce nouveau and enable modesetting. I'll do some experiments on my nvidia kit.

Jim, which wifi driver? And, do you mean interfaces versus connections?

Before I recompile the kernel I want to hear from some Broadcom users.

EDIT: Jim, I think I found a possible cause for your problem. Are you using a usb dongle? If so, then usb2 is broken. Strange since I specifically checked that in the kernel config and checked usb3. Oh well, that's why we test!

Pemasu and the "tulip" driver on k-3.10...

Keep it to yourself (it's a secret) , but I've been running (see screenie) on all 3 boxes. No driver problems.

Hi Mick

Pristine manual frugal install to my HP550 laptop.

The Broadcom B43 module was not loaded - this has been a common fault on all k3 pups I've tried so far although interestingly I also tried wuxiandianzi's k3.1.8 version of lupu528 today and that was the first that did load b43 correctly for me.

I hoped that meant the problem had been fixed from k3.1.8 onwards but now you have shattered my world with the problem still there in k3.1.9 slacko :-(

Wonder what wuxiandianzi has done differently??

My quick fix is to put modprobe b43 into
/etc/rc.d/rc.local

Otherwise everything else - sound, touchpad, savefile creation, frisbee, pnethood samba shares - seem OK so far. Posting from 5.3.1.1 Seamonkey.

Cheers
Peebee

Are you using a usb dongle? No, this Laptop uses an installed:
Network controller: Intel Corporation Centrino Wireless-N 1030
KERNEL MODULE: iwlagn
Ethernet controller: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. RTL8101E/RTL8102E PCI Express Fast Ethernet controller
KERNEL MODULE: r8169

Incidently, my boot code is on a USB flash drive which is working fine so I don't believe that there is any USB problem.

Jim

peebee,

This kernel seems a bit of a lemon  , so don't despair, I reckon there may be some dependency that is needed, or else there is a bug in newer versions of woof preventing auto loading of the broadcom driver. Lupu is built on a very old woof.

What I'll do is check wuxi's kernel config, see if there is anything broadcom related then try things out on the wife's macbook, it's the only broadcom I have access to, worked fine with 2.6.39.4.

Some would get online but would take like 10 minutes to get an IP. This was almost instantly online so thanks :) so glad to figure out it wasnt my wireless setup & more to do with the kernel which is what i really hoped it was. my wireless info if needed is below.

Booted from live cd using default options-

Went straight to desktop using 1366x768

No network interface detected.

I have two controllers on this HP Pentium 4, 2.8 ghz pc
1. Ethernet Controller-ADMtek NC100 Network Everywhere Fast Ethernet 10/100 (rev 11)

2. Ethernet Controller - Intel Corporation 82562EZ 10/100 Ethernet Controller (rev02)

First time in two years of using puppies that "No interface detected":.
Sometimes I have to select one or the other and then it works, but no cigar this time

Code: Select all

tulip : Digital 21*4* Tulip ethernet driver
that I posted about earlier.
