gateway e3400 p3

#1 Post by michaelp »

I was given recently this gateway computer. It has a 1.0ghz p3 and I ordered 512mb of ram and a Maxtor 40gb 7200rpm hard drive. I am thinking about getting a radeon 8500 as well, since it's all very cheap these days. I have and led monitor I hope to use with it, too. Anyway I was thinking it would be a good Puppy Linux computer? Should I try to find and nVidia card instead though? I wonder how well it will perform overall. It's just a project since I am usually very bored. I am cleaning out all the dust right now and cleaning the processor and installing some arctic silver since I happened to have some.

I thought about putting a heavier distrobution on it but I am thinking lighter will be much better for this lil machine.

I was also thinking about picking up a 3dfx card but I don't know if there are still Linux drivers for them

You will have better luck with drivers for Nvidia graphics cards.
3DFX do not try. Too old anyway.
Wary Puppy is the newest Puppy designed for old hardware. However, that does not mean other versions will not work.
Good ones to try.
Lucid Pupppy 5.2.8
Puppy 4.3.1
The things they do not tell you, are usually the clue to solving the problem.
When I was a kid I wanted to be older.... This is not what I expected
YaPI(any iso installer)
