Diamond - 9 May 2012

#1 Post by TLM »

May 9th, 2012: New release of Diamond. This will probably be the last release built on the 528.004 base. The next release will most likely be built on 528.005 LucidPlus, which will take advantage of the 41 extra drivers. Also have been successful with Diamond beta builds of Slacko. But for now this new version is still based on Lucid Puppy 528.004.
Get it here:

MD5: 9807609929DE0ACBA9CCCD31E4682A53
ISO size: 274 MB

May 13th, 2012
Full Version (With LibreOffice 3.5.3 and Java Runtime Environment 1.7u4)

MD5: 079E37AF1472552AA08E37579DB1E781
ISO size: 465 MB

Whats New in this release:
Lxmenu category icons

Simple Scan---lightweight alternative to xsane. No PET available for this; i lifted the entire program manually from PCLinuxOS and transplanted it into Puppy, along with a hpliplite scan pet, and everything works!
Image

Custom Diamond Openbox theme
Enhancements to tint2, including date tooltip on the clock, as well as mouse-click functions when clicking on the clock. Left click opens the Osmo calendar; right click opens the utility to set the time and date. Also some coloration added to the tint2 theme. Volume control has also been colorized.

The desktops are intuitively laid out and names as Left and Right. Taskbar uses icon view to show tasks, making this a very efficient multitasking system. From the following screenshot, you can see that there are 6 tasks open in the Left desktop, and another 5 tasks in the Right desktop (all tasks minimized for the screenshot)

The Openbox menu has also been improved:
Image

Corrected spelling in Openbox Simple Theme Creator form "Boarders" to "Borders"
Removed Sylpheed and added Thunderbird. Changed defaultemail accordingly.
Firefox updated to version 12.
GetFlash upgraded to version 1.0
Capitalization of tiltles of all first tier subfolders under root (My Documents, Downloads, etc) Several programs such as Pupsnap and Pupctorrent were coded to produce lower-cased versions of these folders, so i have modified all of those programs as well to use the new upper=cased folders.

Moved startup sound to /etc/init.d For those not familiar with the startup sound, it is a female voice proclaiming: "initializing startup sequence" The sound used to load after the desktop was up, which was kind of out of sync since the initialization was already complete at the time the sound played. The startup sound will now play about the time the keyboard wizard appears when using the live cd, and will play before the desktop loads on a full HD install. Have not tried frugal.

New! Now there is also a shutdown sound: the counterpart to the above mentioned sound. For those not familiar with Diamond, it uses the ali-logout python script by forum member alexandrion. I have made a script similar to the startup sound script which now plays the following sound: "initializing shutdown sequence" I added and exec line of code to this script to invoke ali-logout, and then pointed all shutdown methods to point to this script. The entire thing is fluid and smooth.

Added Mixxx (thanks 666philb) you will need nvidia or ati drivers to run Mixxx.
Enjoy! Thanks always to B.K, alexandrion, pri, pemasu, playdayz, and all other forum members who have been of great assistance and influence.

Two file managers: Thunar and ROX. Two panels. Two menus. This might seem like duplicity and redundancy to some, but to me it represents a diverse computing experience that is multifaceted, like a diamond. :D
More screenshots:

Features timidity MIDI player with GUI:

Other features:

Imported xkill from another puppy
Simple System Settings Center
Gnome Player
PupRadio
Precord
FF Convert
Extra cursor themes
Pristine uniform naming of all menu entries
Better looking icons
Persistent Startup sound (exclusive!) See the Howto section of the forum for my post about this.
Geweled
Many common file associations are preconfigured to open in desired applications, including images, sounds, word documents, etc.

Thanks to BK, alexandrion, pri, pemasu and many other forum members for the knowledge and components that made Diamond possible.

Don't get me wrong. No criticism.
Why is the iso 450MB instead of say 128MB or 250MB even?
Is it some MIDI Sequencer or VideoEditing software that is big?

Just me curious.
I use Google Search on Puppy Forum
not an ideal solution though

No, surely not the MIDI Sequencer!

MIDI normally does not need big files - audio & video does.

And Libre Office does. I do have an libre office sfs and it's size is about 155mb.

I did not choose libre office to put in an official LazY Puppy sfs because of too many known problems - and there have been more arrived after releasing LazY Puppy. Meanwhile there are several posts about strange behavior of libre office inside this forum.

VLC maybe big as well. I do have several versions from about 25mb up to about 55mb.

I'm not sure if especially an office package is worth a huge iso like this one :?

Edit: I am sure the best way for all puppies is to stay as small as possible and do general use .sfs files instead of installed .pet files. So maybe even the 198mb LazY Puppy is a little to big? I do ask this to me every time and maybe there will be a LazY Puppy Lite?

We will see.

Note: the only reason i would daily use an huge iso about 250mb or more would be a full featured iso with audio applications. But, do you know what? I got one! :D

I think many like me like big pre configured pups. where all apps are installed, like VLC etc. Most my test and main computers are atleast singel core 3ghz or duel core laptops. my main htpc laptop is a i3 and my main laptop is a i7. I like the idea of small pups but realy like if someone has made the effort and installed everything i need for me :)

Hi TLM,
Looks good 8)
If you want to run just the one panel Tint2 you can add an openbox menu and application lauchers to it.

Einar, Yes I am that kind of guy too. I want everything included.
But 450 is still very much even if VLC is included.
Maybe it is Phyton and C--, Java and Development stuff that is there?

Hi, the larger iso is due to libreoffice and also the java that libreoffice requires. Like i mentioned in the beginning of the thread, this is a puplet that i created primarily for my personal use. I did not go all out to make it lite. I just needed it to have everything i need. So at 477 mb, it takes its place as a heavy pup, such as TEENpup. But while heavy for a puppy, it is still lite for a linux :D

Yes, this is true and the desktop is also nice.

But i wonder how did you put libre office and java together?

Doesn't java install files outside puppy - on /mnt/home f.e?

How did you solved this?

I am interested in this because of some other applications using java.

I installed java from a PET that i had found on the forum some time ago. It was u26 version i think. I had it stored on a thumb drive, so i am not sure where on the forum i found the download link. But if you do a search, there are several java pets floating around out there, and this one installed it to the /opt directory.

Already found a few bugs which i will fix and update the iso when i have time. I need to modify my defautlbrowser and defaulthtmlviewer files (in /usr/local/bin) to make firefox open Help links in other applications. For instance, if you click on Help in FF convert, it just opens firefox to the homepage. And if you click www in pupradio, same result. However editing defaultbrowser and defaulthtmlviewer to reflect /usr/lib/firefox/firefox fixes this kind of issue.

Thanks TLM. Yes I am all for that the developer should make
the dream machine that tehy themselves love. That is supporting
the inner motivation best.

But sadly you don't have an Acer D250 then you would have known
that it fail to find a driver for the Atheros there that work.

The surprising thing is that Atheros that is in some 18 out of 20
Puppies and 18 out of 20 Ubuntu too always give me internet
using LAN but your OS and two more Puppies fail to see any LAN
card connection at all. And it does not help to load same driver
that I use on all the other puppies that works so something odd
apart from that it looked like you wanted it.

Hi Nooby

in these race cases when wifi does not work i have a mini usb wireless adapter i orderd from DX. Cheap :)

http://www.dealextreme.com/p/ultra-mini ... pter-48166

its has the realtek 8192CU chip. and also its fun to have extra wifi cards for your laptops. with diffferent brand names. It seams to me that broadcom adapters give me the most trouble

Sorry that you are experiencing connection issues. I did put a folder in there with Broadcom pets for those needing them (see under Network in the menu) however i do not have enough PCs to make sure this puplet is compatible with everything. I too use a cheap usb wifi adapter from ebay (Zydas zd1211rw chipset module) this adapter works flawlessly in every linux i have tried it on. But i do understand how pleasant it is to get your built in LAN adapters to work. If you come up with a working solution, please do post it here and i will roll it into the next release. I have decided to keep a list of all bugs and fixes and update the diamond iso every 3 months or so. That way i can also keep up with the latest firefox and flash too. Thank you for the feedback.

Is the Atheros driver that you use configured specifically for kernel 2.6.33.2?
I checked in the drivers of diamond, and there are several atheros drivers in there. Located in /lib/modules/2.6.33.2/kernel/drivers/net/wireless/ath

That might be a place to start looking. It contains 3 different folders of atheros drivers, but i do not know which one you need or whether they will load and function correctly. However i am still fairly new to all this, but will try to help you.

I guess you are right.

I am not on that level. I barely get what I would need to do to follow
your suggestion. I rather prefer that somebody else try it out and
report back to you. I just wanted to give example what did happen
if somebody as noob as what I am tried it out. No big deal.
You decided if it is of help or not. I am not enough motivated
to give it more time. Don't get me wrong. I do wish you success.

But I am into Lupu Puppy just now, I have Lupu 528 004 that is my main Puppy
and only wanted to test your Diamond to give feedback
on things that could be a trouble for those with same hardware
that I have :)

But i am not rich, otherwise i would stay spend more time studying these things. I will do a little each day and do the best i can tho. Thanks and cheers to you :)

Hi TLM I Burned the iso to cd . I've been testing it out . it boots smoothly .

Runs nice and smooth too. I don't see its size as a handicap at all . I think it will be a great puppy ! :D Can't wait to see more .
