Changing File Associations

#1 Post by geoff777 »

Hi,

Where do I change the application - file type associations?

.html files currently open in Dillo if I want to edit them.

I'd prefer it if they opened in Geany.

Thanks

right click on the file and choose 'set run action' then drag and drop 'geany' from /usr/bin/ onto the 'drop suitable application here' window.

You can also do rightclick on the html file and then choose "open with" that gives you an selection of programs to open the right-clicked file

Ow, thanks for reminding me about MIMEs..

But seriously - good page in the wikka, darkcity. That'll work in rox but other file managers may do it a bit differently.. for example thunar and emelfm have their own ways (and are the default fm in a few pups). I particularly like xfe, so I've taken to editing that rc a bit (fairly simple as there's a file types section and an openwith/history for a droplist selection) .. lol, I believe it also has an 'associate file type' dialogue somewheres. Mc is another that has some fans. In qtcmd I especially appreciate opening as text is read-only by default and easy toggle to edit if you need to.

couldn't find any thing on rc, mc or qtcmd
rc is the suffix for many config files (for example xferc)
mc here
qtcmd here and here

2¢ discounted :)

from what I understand Puppy used to be quite mixed in with jwm and rox. any how I've added a line to the first para - stating for ROX.

With the Right-Click associations it seem a bit odd to use /usr/local/apps but I think this is so you get the icons in the menu?

I've made a new entry on File Managers - please expand if you like
