What advantages to Fatdog?
It's slower to boot. Sad
User doesn't work as root. Sad
Different to other Puppies.
No PPM.
But Firefox looks good!
Ah new cheap hardware. What fun!
Good that Slacko is working.

Fatdog is 64bit and optimised for more memory
and 64 bit advantages that will be more apparent in the future.
You can look them up, better security, use of memory etc.

Fatdog was started pre-woof so is a little non-standard.

Slower to boot after the first shutdown?
It may because it is larger or fatter - more to load into memory.
As far as I remember it does have a PPM.
I believe it is hidden away in the control panel . . .
Firefox works well :)

I'm really enjoying using Slacko-5.3.3. :D
Seems like...everything I try in Slacko "just works". 8)
And IT LOOKS REALLY GOOD too!
I even have it set up "to save or not to save" the sessions...
Both during the session, and at shut-down/reboot.
[This makes it my new number-1 Puppy]

I'm enjoying the improved speed of this new PC.
[See the screenshot below showing near zero use of 4GB->(3GB in use) RAM and 2.2GHz processor speed (64-bit hardware, 32-bit OS)]
Oops, meant to select a region, but got the whole screen.

Looking forward to being able to do the extra stuff the old PC couldn't do.
e.g.
Multi-session live Puppy DVD-RW. [Now have enough RAM?]
Trying out Boxee. [CPU speed now fast enough?]

And Psip should work better too.

Got a link to the latest Psip PET file?
I have Psip32-1.2RC2-Slacko.pet
Is that the latest?

Found this Psip webpage/repo.
Will install Psip32-1.2-Slacko.pet

CatDude may have compiled a later one but it won't be significantly different.

I am unsure of if I have tested this final release of Slacko.
I have the tested many of the older ones. 5.3.3 14??? X ?
Thin Slacko and Fat Slacko too.

Could it be me being a typical habitual person. Lupu arrived first and
I am more used to Lupu. Lupu Firefox has all the bookmarks and such.
All the installed programs so to me Slacko is more like a test OS that
one test and then go back to one's main OS.

Maybe Slacko is better? I have no idea I use Lupu so how can I know?

Why do you guys chose Slacko over Lupu? What where disappointing
about Lupu that made you abandon ship? :)
and now that I have found FatDog why should I care about Lupu
or even care about Slacko? Damn I am a confused Linux user indeed.

Both FatSlacko and ThinSlacko do work on my gear too so most likely
it is just old habit that I have used Lupu for so long that I am used to it. :)

Thanks Mick!

Nooby

You have tested THINSlacko 5.3.3, the one with the older Firefox :) .

The underlying structure of that puplet is Slacko-5.3.3, so if that works there is no need to test, however you can do what you want

Maybe Slacko is better?
Linux = kernel
. . . but for most people a working Linux
may run on server or in our case on a desktop
and include a range of programs
So Linux = kernel + working interface

The kernel is regularly updated with options
hardware support, better, newer more optimised drivers etc

Slacko uses a newer kernel.

In my experience Lucid for most people worked better
on the visual side and Slacko has improved the sound options.

Slacko uses the later kernel

Fatdog uses a later Intel CPU - requiring a different configuration options when compiling the kernel
Puppi uses a completely different CPU - support for chips and hardware is a collaborative, open endeavour as ever

Hope that is helpful. :)

As illustrated by the fact that Slacko-5.3.3-4g-scsi was the only one of the 7 Puppies that worked on my OLD PC, that would completely work on my new up-to-the-minute PC.
Wary-5.3 booted, but didn't have the necessary module to get me on the internet.

Jasper, I maybe misunderstood. Edited it out as you recommended.
I will try to download the new alpha. That is confusing to me.
I mean this is the final so why a new alpha :)
Oh he explain it like this

"This is alpha from the latest woof. I completely rebuilt my woof tree so it's possible I missed something.

It has k3.2.21. It is from the LTS kernel branch which I intend to follow until it reaches EOL.

There are bugfixes and enhancements applied since 5.3.3 but that doesn't mean new bugs haven't been introduced, especially since it's the latest woof."

Glad to see I can use the latest langpack_es with Slacko. :D
I'll see if I can optimize the package to include things that aren't in Wary/Racy.

Testers wanted.
Don't see any issues on bog std kit - solid as always. One of my most reliable tools.
Do you anticipate any problem upgrading a FULL from 5.3.3 ?

I'm now happy to say that it is stable again. The defrag seems to have fixed matters. Now all that remains is to re-do the installs of the few things I like using.

I wrote earlier today: -

I'm sad to say that Slacko 5.3.3 has cacked itself on my old Toshiba A200 laptop after months of reliable service, and I can't revive it. I run it from a CD and save on the HDD. I've even tried starting from scratch - copied off the save file and deleted the slacko sfs, and it runs ok first time but fails to save the initial setting (eg hostname etc,) properly at shutdown. It saves something but on restart I have a screen full of caution triangles, the default background is missing and it wants to do the initial setup stuff again. Back to Lupo for the time being. I'll defrag the HDD on XP and try again later.

Also posted in the Puppy on laptops thread.

camera fail

#541 Post by cowonjolt »

Need some pointers to get my camera configured. GTkam doesn't list my Fuji Finepix A-600 the list goes from A-320 to A-800 and above and none work, also tried the ptp usb one with no success. Similar results with Pupcamera. On other OS's I always used Digikam and it worked but I don't see it available anywhere for Slacko. I use camera alot in a side hobby so hope I can find a solution for Slacko. Thanks 8)

digikam is available in the Slackware repos, you need to enable them in PPM configuration. However, it depends on many KDE libraries which are huge. I'll see if there is an update to libgphoto which supports your camera. Finepix are really good cameras in my opinion :)

01micko, thanks for the reply. I took a quick look but was unable to find Digikam in the Slackware repos... I checked the official, salix, slacko, and the slacko official but did not find it. I assume it requires the glib2 packages plus others. Also looked at gphoto and gphoto2 but couldn't find anything for my camera but not sure I was looking in the right place for it. Look forward to hearing if you turn something up.
On another note I created an ext4 partition on a 8gig flash drive and installed woof in it but when I tried to run 0setup it errors out after a couple of downloads saying I need to change the superblock in the previous download or something like that so I was unable yet to pursue that route till I can figure out what I need to do to fix it. I'm not real clear on the woof and woof2 thing... how many different woofs are there anyway and how do you specify which one you want?. The 0setup started wanting to download what appeared to be some very old puppy stuff and that threw me a curve ball cause I'm not sure if that stuff is even in Slacko. The info I find to use of woof seems outdated but maybe I just don't understand it yet. Anyway thanks for any help you can provide. :?

Found digikam in salix but attempts to install it lock up my system so I'm forced to use another os live that has it available for now. The other os is much slower and doesn't offer save files so have to reinstall, update, etc at every boot again. Very frustrating... :(
