Subject description: To watch DVDs

hello everybody!

I would like to use a TV plasma lg 50pt250r like the monitor (for laptop dell latitude c600)

Using winxpsp2 this is possible (using VGA cable and just pressing FN+FCool. But it isn't possible using Puppy Slacko 3 (or puppy lucid 528) if I choose Xorg, because only appears the GRUB, but the desktop doesn't appear. Using VESA its possible, but there are problems to watch DVD videos (for example with GNOME, VLC media player, etc.), so i really need Xorg

Can anybody tell me how can i use Xorg configuration to use this TV like the monitor? or Do you know a better way to do it?

Also, can anybody tell me another way to mount a DVD or CD?, because there are some DVD´s which cant be mounted using ¨Pmounter¨

Thank you very much for reading and helping!

What video card is in computer?
Using Lucid 528.
In Quickpet->drivers tab
Run "click here to test your graphics card"
What driver is recommended?
If not what you are using, try using that driver.

You have to press Fn + F8 BEFORE puppy boots at the 5 second splashscreen, then it will display on the external monitor

Once puppy has booted to desktop use xrandr in slacko, maybe lupu as well

Hello again!

OK!, I will explain this issue more detailed:

I have a dell latitude c600 and a TV lg plasma 50pt250r. Also I purchase a VGA cable (RGB) and a S-video cable. So It would be fantastic to use this TV like the monitor

I had installed on the laptop Windows XP SP2, Lucid Puppy Linux 528, Slacko Puppy Linux 531

Also I installed the Graphic Card Driver (Slickpet test the graphic card and suggest the best driver: "mesa" or "xorg-high"). I installed mesa on Slacko and Xorg-high on Lucid. And I installed lxrandr too.

First I do all the wired connections between tv and laptop then I turned them on, then appears GRUB. When I press a few times FN + F8 then GRUB can be displayed only on TV.

- If I chose Windows XP Sp2, I could see the desktop only on TV (everything else was ok)

- If I choose Lucid or Slacko, I can see the desktop on TV only if Xorgwizard has VESA (generic driver by default). But When I watch videos (full screen with VLC or GNOME media player) there are some problems (pause, etc.). I mean I have to enter to xorgwizard, select vesa, (automatic detection always fail), 1024x768,...

- If I choose Lucid or Slacko, I can't see the desktop on TV if Xorgwizard has xorg (r128 by default), but again the desktop is displayed on the laptop.

- If I use the S-video cable the quality is the worst

Can anybody tell me why this TV can't show the desktop if Xorgwizard has xorg (by default)? I guess It's not a problem with drivers or resolution or freshrate, because the desktop can be displayed if xorgwizard has the generic driver vesa.

Also How could I fix this problem? I hope somebody knows how to fix this issue!

Thanks a lot!

For simple minds (like me) lets only talk about one version of Puppy.
Lucid528
First I would suggest using the latest version Lucid528.005

Your main problem is video playback issues?
Can be caused by settings not good in the players you are using.
Resolution or refresh rate can also be a factor.
This is also a video driver problem.

First thing need to know is what video card you have in computer.
Get Lucid running using the Vesa video driver.
That gives us a specific known start point.
Run Quickpet. (icon on desktop)
Select file->Report video.
What does it say for Chip Description?

In Quickpet->drivers tab->click here to test graphics card
What does it recommend for video driver?

Subject description: correct driver

hi bigpup!

First I set:

- Boot Lucid Puppy Linux 528 (last version 005):

- If: xorgwizard / xorg / probing video hardware - automatic probing of your monitor was unsuccessfully / then I have to choose between some generic (LCD, CRT,...): for example it's ok if I choose "C h31.5-48.5v40-70 LCD Panel 1024x768" / then I choose again 1024x768x24 / TEST / TEST X NOW / and the summary says "1024x768 pixels, 48,56 Khz Horizontal Syn frequency, 61,00 Khz Vertical refresh frequency, driver r128" / finally press FINISHED / write xwin / then appears the desktop. This way when I play a video for example with VLC media player with default configuration (full screen is perfect)

- But if: xorgwizard / vesa / probing video hardware - automatic probing of your monitor was unsuccessfully / then I have to choose between some generic (LCD, CRT,...): for example "C h31.5-48.5v40-70 LCD Panel 1024x768" / then I choose again 1024x768x24 / TEST / TEST X NOW / and the summary says "1024x768 pixels, 48,56 Khz Horizontal Syn frequency, 61,00 Khz Vertical refresh frequency, driver VESA" / finally press FINISHED / write xwin / then appears the desktop. This way when I play a video for example with VLC media player with default configuration (full screen mode is wrong there is some pauses, lines, etc. sometimes in normal mode too)

- Anyway as you say with this vesa configuration I went to Quickpet / File / Report Video / and appears:

Video report: Lucid version 528
Chip description:
oem: Ati Mobile M3
Driver used by Xorg:
vesa
Video Mode used by Xorg:
Resolution: Depth 24 Depth: "Display"

- Besides going to Quickpet / Driver / Test Graphic Card / and says "...the best addon driver is Xorg-High.

- A few days ago I installed that driver but there is the same problem.

Well. I hope your answer, Bye

Well you got ahead of me, but seems you found the right driver to use for this video card. Luckily it was still part of xorg.
Quickpet recommends Vesa with xorg-high to be conservative for this old an ATi video chip. (best guess)
Xorg-high is not a true driver, but added features for Vesa driver.

When running Xorgwizard you can select choose to select the driver to use.

So now that you have a good driver to use (r128)
What exactly is the rest of your problem?

hi bigpup!

Unfortunately the problem doesn't get better (Xorg-r128 doesn't work with TV, vesa can do it, but doesn't work well with the videos)

You say r128 driver is Ok. Then:

- If I go xorgwizard, appears to choose "Xorg", "Choose", "vesa" ("...for the correct driver..."). Then I select "choose" / "r128 ATI", but again appears to choose "Xorg", "Choose", "vesa" ("...for the correct driver..."), but there should appear to select the monitor... I can repeat the procedure, but there is the same problem (obviously I can select "vesa" but later there is no option to select "r128" driver, so in the end the driver will be "vesa"

Is this problem impossible to fix?

bye

Hi
I assume you're using a vga to RGB cable hooked up to a scart connector? If not does the TV have a monitor/vga i/p, and you connect vga out to vga in?

The best way to identify the TV/monitor hardware is to go to a console, and type
Code:
lspci -nn

then post the result here

You can copy console o/p by using the middle mouse button, or both l/h and r/h buttons together

Is the fn/f8 bit working now, before puppy boots?
