Has anybody else tried pnethood on Precise Beta 6 or 7?? It is very very slow to scan and connect compared with other recent puppies.

I can confirm that. I don't know what has changed in Pnethood, but you might want to look at YASSM. It's much faster.

I already knew about:config and about:buildconfig in mozilla products, but found about:memory which gives an idea of where your resources are going (displaying this page is an extra ~1mb), but there is still room for improvement, since the largest load is "anonymous":

It is supposedly better in the newer versions (this was from 2.6.x), but would make me consider 256Mb of RAM as insufficient unless swap was available.

Anyhow, thought it would be an interesting metric to look at in new releases when considering hardware recommendations.

Edit: tried out the new version and hacked nobus to be a stub replacement for dbus and dbus-glib that works with official builds and is only a 5kb pet and available sources are here:

Usage:
1. Boot precise beta7 with boot parameter 'puppy pfix=nox'.
2. Run 'xorgwizard', choose 'vesa'.
3. 'xwin' to get graphical desktop.
4. Click the nvidia-glx-304.43-k3.2.29.sfs and choose 'Install'.
5. Skip the launcher 'Nvidia config'.
6. Run 'xorgwizard', choose 'probe'.

So how would n00Bs like me set the modeset line if having issues with the display? I realize the boot options splash for F2 and F3 can only cover a somewhat limited scenario. Would it be something like "puppy xxxx.modeset=0" or is it much more involved? I really have no idea if it would be feasible to edit xorg.conf with mp on an initial boot, presuming the tools are available and I have a legible display for visual feedback to work with.

Perhaps it's as shinobar says at the top of p43 - "It is hard to type such a boot option at boot." especially if you're typing 'in the dark' and kind of guessing if you're doing it correctly, in proper sequence and so forth.

Coming from racy 5.3 (the first pup I had to do a modeline in since there were offsets I needed to tweak to see almost all of the screen at my preferred 1024x768), modeset is now not totally unfamiliar to me as a working concept. But how to do it on an initial boot may be yet another learning experience.

just as my dialup dl of xdelta for beta7-pae is finally finishing, I see BK will be uploading the nonpae beta7 "targeting older hardware, including older video hardware" (joy ) soon..

HCFpcimodem needs testing by someone who has such a modem, because I have no way to verify it works.

I have added difference listings for the transition to compatibility with kernels 3.x, to remove the mystery as to what was done. Note that one of the hsf files (framewrk.h) has changed from the dell version to the linuxant version, which is why many changed statements are not bracketed by an if-else-endif structure.

Quick test live pfix=ram of the non-pae 5.3.95.1 version of Precise. Booted to a totally black desktop with the infamous "monitor out of range" message. Was able to use xorgwizard to get the desired 1366x768 resolution though.

5.3.95.1 non-pae version live pfix=ram on another old box (2008) with Nvidia graphics.

Booted to a totally gibberish, multicolored screen....... ctrl,alt/bksp led to the same gibberish screen. Hard poweroff. Booted pfix=ram,nox..... chose "nv" in xorgwizard and got...... the same totally gibberish display. Third try, pfix=nox chose "vesa" and at least it's working.

1st look precise 5.3.95 (beta7, pae)

Looks like it is as simple as "puppy radeon.modeset=0" after a few false starts. Initial 800x600x16 was okay (but cramped), edited xorg.conf for 1024x768x24 and it's the same shifted left 20-30pixels and a bit wide (so I did the same modeline fix as for racy 5.3)..

..some nice touches for a standard default setup (and easily changed, mostly). Small dinks like two ffconvert in the rox openwith (one capped, other not) and the 'traditional' optical drive in the 2nd floppy tab as well as the usb stick in the optical tab in pmount tabview (it got the hdds in the correct tab). Maybe have pmount start in single window view . Very pleased to see a few of my favorites as standard in precise (htop and sfs-load on-the-fly).

Only niggle is it seems I'll have to do the bootcode "puppy radeon.modeset=0" manually on every boot unless there's an easy way to automate it on liveCD multisession.

5.3.95 on my old Windows 7/PCLOS/Puppy box......... booted straight to the correct 1440x900 resolution with working sound. Did need to use SNS for the internet connection

Several black-screen events with pae version - not with expected 'problem' systems. Looking at suggested work-arounds. Presently running the non-pae version through a dozen or so machines. Too many systems to report every nuance as Bill & James are doing an excellent job in that respect; will await an RC or Gold.

DHCP doesn't seem to be switched on by default any longer, although Flash is now installed by default, at least for SM - good move.
None of the four ATI drivers in 'Probe' function with my Radeon9200.
