How to get printer to print in b&w unless told otherwise? |
|
I have Lucid Puppy 528 and a HP Deskjet930c printer.
The printer is installed and does print stuff.
But how do I set it up so that it prints in black in draft mode unless I tell it otherwise please?
Colour cartridges get rapidly used up - I prefer printing in black and white only.
This particularly applies to printing web-pages.
Thanks
Edit: I found something about HPLIP which is said to be already present in many Linux distributions: http://www.openprinting.org/printer/HP/HP-DeskJet_930C http://hplipopensource.com/hplip-web/index.html If it is present, how do I activate it please?
I have tried typing in the suggested command to find out if HPLIP is already present but just get an error message.

I don't have a color printer, so I'm only guessing . . .
but maybe
go to setup --> cups printer wizard --> administration --> manage printers --> choose the printer --> administration --> choose default options.

Open the CUPS wizard.
In CUPS 1.4 .....
Click the Printers tab.
Select your printer.
Click on Administration.
Select Set Default Options.

With Windows XP, I had the same problem with two HP printers.
(psc 1110 and C4480)
When I set them to print in black and white, they would auto-default back to color.
So I just remove the color cartridge, and everything works fine.

Unfortunately my HP Deskjet930c refuses to print (even in b&w) without a fully functioning colour cartridge in place. I spent all afternoon trying to coax it to print, without success.
The problem is that unless it is prevented from printing in colour, I have to keep buying expensive new colour cartridges even when I dont want to print in colour.
I tried switching off colour in the way suggested above, but the best I could do was get it to print in greyscale. Nor were any of the maintenance options offered. So I think it essential that I download HPLIP.
Does anyone know how I download, install, and activate HPLIP please?
Thanks

isn't that what you want to do? sorry if i don't understand
Check the below screen shots-- is any of this available? If you have already put it in greyscale, you can also adjust to draft mode.

Read here. There is an HPLIP package already available for Lupu.
