When I uninstalled the 260.16 package and then ran rmmod nvidia, the message said there was no nvidia module on /lib/proc/modules (or somewhere like that).
So maybe while it was ticked to be installed besides the driver, the kmod package I think plus one another, maybe they weren't installed? Anyway, I'll try the upstream .run package now in Puppy for the first time.
*edit* yay, running 295.33 right now. Sometimes something doesn't work so we find something even better.
drblock2, not wanting to spam the thread, which is a bug report thread but just saying that I think the driver for your FX5200 is 173.14.31

@fyujj

Yes, you are right. The recommended driver for the nvidia GeForce FX5200 is 173.14.31, but the PPM only has files for nvidia 71.86.15 and much later versions. I took the hint from BK and installed nvidia 71.86.15 in the manner described.

If I have time, I will try the other drivers for the sake of comparison.

Racy 5.3.
I couldnt get Pmusic to play net streams. The default Hoovers and selections from Webmusic tab didnt play. ....connecting just stayed on the bottom. Maybe it is just me. I installed ffmpeg pets for my dpup exprimo and net streams started to work.

Could someone else give feedback also....

Racy, Saluki and Precise Pangolin suffers all drunken semiprecise touchpad problem. I suppose the xorg - xorg-server is the guilty. My bad luck.

GParted and Pdisk (..if they can't do the job..)

#19 Post by FeodorF »

Hm, how to start?

Well, I have an old sata drive, which is/was hijacked (Hell yeah, my Puppy Linux PC can fly!) by Windo..-NT professional.

I tried GParted and Pdisk (fdisk and cfdisk) - all three included in Wary/Racy 5.3 . No matter what I tried, I always ended up with lots of unused space on the hard disk and partition errors, looking like a broken drive.

Before experimenting for some hours, I should have went to our forum. - The answer was right there.

http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=77288
forum member bigpup:

I suggest getting the latest live CD version of Gparted and using it to do any heavy changes. It is a live CD that is specifically made to run Gparted. The kernel is tweaked, to support Gparted functions, it is the latest version of Gparted, and required programs are updated. Has TestDisk and other recovery programs.

http://sourceforge.net/projects/gparted ... /0.12.0-5/
I burned the ISO onto a cd, started this version of gparted and got rid of the Wind.. shi., as you can see.

I would strongly suggest, that a help page be added before the start of Gparted and Pdisk (Asking to use the gparted live cd, if in trouble).

Best Wishes,
Feodor

Terminal Appearance with Rox-filer

#20 Post by duke93535 »

Changed the /usr/bin/xterm script to read urxvt on the last line. This gets the terminal console when opened by rox menu to appear the same as directed by Urxvtset setup terminal emulator in main menu> desktop.

Racy 5.3

I was doing a test run of Racy 5.3 and wanted to save the added programs to the CD and it fell on two different CD's. Both were tried a couple times a piece.

racy5.3

opera-11.62-1347.i386.linux
flashplayer -You have version 11,2,202,228 installed

run opera in a terminal and get

Code: Select all

open: No such file or directory
open: No such file or directory

doesnt happen in lupu528.005 or saluki16 with the exact same portable opera setup.
pemasu recently posted about flash having missing dependancies perhaps that is what is not being found.

The ATI Radeon open source driver looks as if it's broken for Racy 5.3 at least. I tried to compile the AMD proprietary driver in Racy - no go. Looks as if the kernel used here needs a specific patch in order to build the fglrx module.

I then had a go with Wary. This time the module built and ran OK.

I'm having bother with the Realtek wlan drivers in Wary though. I can take the stable source code wifi stuff from linuxwireless.org, build them OK, but the firmware seems to be kaput - won't scan for wifi hotspots nor asscociate with them.

Racy is better with the wlan drivers, but then again there is no decent video module - I have to put up with the VESA driver.

I wonder if Barry could see his way to building a hybrid version just for me - a cross between Racy and Wary?

Call it Wracy or Rwacy?

Yes your not the first nor the last to experience this mystery.
I've had it too and also with Firefox and it is very annoying.

Sadly I don't remember if somebody came up with a solution.
We talked about it in threads some time ago.

Maybe the search engine in my signature can find these and
see if anybody know the easiest way to get it going when it lock up.

You knowing linux way better than me maybe can get a hang
on what is needed based on all the reports about it. I am too lazy
and not bright enough to get what is going on. I solved it by using
Opera each time that it happens :)
I use Google Search on Puppy Forum
not an ideal solution though

Hello,
=> nvidia-glx-sdl-295.20-1.sfs (for my geforce 9600 gt card).I copied this sfs file into my home directory, set my puppy to take it in account at startup, then reboot... Had to come back to prompt/xorgwizard/choose/nvidia... At this point, if choosing 1920X1200x24 (native resolution), this didn't work and the nvidia gui said that my card seemed not to be well installed. If choosing a lower resolution, this works and I can finally set the good resolution through the nvidia gui which is available. Don't know if it is a good way but this is how I did to make my nvidia card working .

Cordialement.

Edit: Sorry, was writing and didn't see the post of Shinobar: so there is a new sfs file!

Wary 5.3

#28 Post by alec78 »

Hi All,

Did a manual update to a frugal install on the hard disc, deleted the save file so there would be no conflicts, edited the boot.lst file, shut down and booted into Wary 5.3, result, "Searching for Puppy Files ... puppy_wary_5.3.sfs not found. Dropping out to initial ramdisc console . . ."
Booted into Arch on the same laptop, navigated to the puppy_wary_5.3.sfs file, in the same directory as the initrd and vmlinuz files, and checked its permissions, Arch said it had none, so I changed it to "read only", shut down and re=booted into Wary, result exactly as before, dropped to ramdisc console.
Anyone have any ideas before I have to burn a CD?

Cheers

I have an installation of Mandriva 2008 Spring on my hard disk. I no longer use it, but I was curious to see whether it would consent to being an Underdog. Simple to set up and worst that could happen - it wouldn't work.

Ooops! Rebooting, I received a flood of error messages, mostly from /etc/profile.d. I have not been able to find the appropriate log file, so I cannot provide specifics.

I deleted the offending Underdog.lnx file and hoped that all would go well on reboot. It did not. I was initially unable to start X, when I did succeed, I booted into a gray desktop with drive icons and the jwm tray bar, but no desktop icons. Menus and everything else worked fine.

Thanks to a contribution by Dejan555:

http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic. ... 675#617675

I was able to locate the problem. The crash and restoration had trashed /root/Choices/ROX-Filer/PuppyPin.

I copied PuppyPin from Slacko 5.3.3 running on another machine on my LAN and entered:

Code: Select all

killall Rox-Riler && rox -p /root/choices/ROX-Filer/PuppyPin

as Dejan recommended.

Desktop restored to normal state!

The positive lesson to be learned from this experience: Make a backup of your save file or create an additional save file for experiments.

The pluses for Puppy:

1. No reason for a panic attack. My data is was not affected. I could have accessed it from another Puppy if necessary.

2. The Puppy community provides excellent help.

3. Sibling Puppies cooperate very nicely.

Booted Racy-5.3 final frugal on SD-micro card 8Gb :

HOW I installed :
Installed via Puppy 4.3.1 mkfs.vfat which is a link to busybox there (now had upgraded BB to 1.18.3), used gparted to set bootflag and grub-install --root-directory /mnt/sdb1 /dev/sdb to install legacy grub and made the menu.lst manually .

About the boot ;
The boot worked from a USB-Card reader - not from the card slot of the USB-modem because the bios did not recognize this slot.

I had probs to boot directly for file not found , but exec switch after more than once mounting proc and rerunning ./init from rdsh finally ended to desktop .

I will have to investigate because it seems, that UPPER and LOWER case is not the same as usual on FAT-32 . Former i had a directory named /OS for the .sfs + initrd.gz and the entry in grub menu.lst had to be lower case ...

FWIW : from bootkernel.log :

a) sdb sdb1 was not listed first time in /tmp/ALLDRIVES0

b) I was having similar problems with mtools not being able to add a label because of not being able to transform somethings from/to codepage 850 which i could not solve for now .

*

I haven't had the need to replug the USB modem a long time, so had been surprised by the yaf message ..configuring. Took quite a time without any progress messages .

*

Selected 1280x1024 but xorg restart by quicksetup did not forced that resolution .

*

LOOKING forward for the new LANG experience in initrd and that the new kernel reboots my dell optilex 745 without the reboot=f kernel parameter .

*

I made an .xpm from the logo picture using mtpaint and added

splashimage (hd0,0)/boot/grub/logo.16.xpm

to grub/menu.lst .

Racy has got 'lss16toppm' and 'ppmtoxpm' installed in the main .sfs so would be a nice addon feature to grubconfig I think .

Despite this, does anyone know something about to compile grub with other keyboards by default ? Had looked into the Caps file in ncurses but found only descriptors for the special keys like F1 or multi-media keys . I am using setkeys but it appears that mapping z to y and y to z leaves me two y and no z keys . :)

*

Flash dl and installation worked for me .

Seamonkey plays Youtube nicely but i am not able to determine where the 20MB download is cached .

Dl it with my customized you2pup which seems to need a downloder installed in the browser to get the needed strings from the html page including the tags of the downloader in the original code .

mplayer plays the video and music great .

Keep on Rolling, Puppy Linux ! :D

Wary 5.3 would not create a save2 file on a gateway 5300 laptop. 20 gb hdd sda1 9gb sda3 6gb 1gb swap I was trying to create a 512 mb ext3 file on a ext2 partition. Wary ran fine live. 5.2.5 sucessfully created a save2 file on sda3 and seems to work fine. fyi

Short update :

The optiplex-745 still needs reboot=f kernel parameter . If the code in the kernel source should handle other dells better it seems to try to fix something for older dells that creates the opposite as the intention might be . This is of course a kernel feature, not a Puppy feature .

The save to file .3fs on fat32 seems to work, all data seems to be inside it (video, flash, changed configuration files) .

*

Boot on asus-1005 10' netbook :

Inserted that mmc card into the builtin slot of the netbook , hit ESC at boot to get the boot-menu and the card showed up as usb device . The boot pfix=ram worked flawlessly and the translated messages from initrd showed up .

I had booted with vga=ask and had chosen a vesa mode which resulted in vesa driver in xorg.conf .
Nevertheless, flsynclient is working nicely to switch on the touchpad tapping :
