"Solitaire" board game (AKA "Peg Solitaire")

#1 Post by SFR »

"Solitaire" board game has nothing common (except it's a single player game) with well known card game neither Mahjong.

The aim is to leave only one piece in the centre of the board:
1. Select a piece and jump over the adjacent one (not placed diagonally) into an empty field.
(The "jumped over" piece will be removed from the board.)
2. If possible, repeat 1.

Update: Peg Solitaire v2.0 (2012-04-29)
- New layouts
- New look'n'feel (thanks to vovchik)
- Simple layout editor
- Already as .pet

Note:
I didn't include 'delete layout' option, so to delete, for instance, unnecessarily saved layout,
go to /usr/local/PegSolitaire/layouts/

Works in recent versions of Lucid, Wary, Slacko and Saluki.

Have fun & Greetings!

I think this one's normally known as 'peg solitaire,' or something like that. At least, that's the name I usually see used for it, on all the versions of it I've seen throughout the years. :|

Unfortunately in my experience it was always 'just' Solitaire, didn't know about this differentiation...
Thanks for the info.

"Solitaire" board game (AKA "Peg Solitaire")

#4 Post by Monsie »

Hi SFR,

Thanks very much for this game. It brought back some childhood memories. I knew this game as "Hi-Q" in the 1960s in Canada and I found a photo of the boxed game on-line so I am attaching it here for interest sake.

Historically, this game was known by a variety of names, but "Peg Solitaire" was probably most common. The game is a few centuries old, and there are some interesting variations in the layout of the pegs, or marbles on the board as explained right here in this Wikipedia article.

Thanks Monsie.

Yeah, memories, I've been given this game when I was 6-7 y.o. maybe.
It took me really little time to find the best solution (1 piece in the middle), but now after years it took me much more time to re-find the solution.
It seems that my IQ/focus level is inversely proportional to my age.

When I find some more free time I would like to not only include another variations, but even write a simple editor for the user, to create own board layouts.
It's quite nightmarish task using <button> widgets, but I think possible.

Dear SFR,

Very nice work. I did a few mods which I think are useful. For one, I didn't know the game, so I added a help screen. I also modded the svg-generating routine to produce slightly more interesting marbles. Please feel free to change as you wish and thanks, again.

With kind regards,
vovchik

Hmm, it took me less time than I supposed...

New version is available - see the first post for screenshots and .pet.

If there's anything you'd like to polish - go for it! I trust your aesthetic sense.
