OpenSonic 1.4
sonic the hedgehog clone

Homepage: http://opensnc.sourceforge.net/home/index.php

Download: opensonic-0.1.4.pet (11mb)

Open Sonic is an open-source game based on the "Sonic the Hedgehog" universe. It introduces a different style of gameplay called cooperative play, in which it's possible to control 3 characters simultaneously. Unlike most similar games, Open Sonic provides a greater level of interaction between the player and the levels. It's more than just a jump'n'run; the user must come up with some strategy in order to get through the levels.

Open Sonic is available for Windows and Linux. The latest release is 0.1.4 (September 19th, 2010). Main features:
It's portable! No installation is required!
Sonic-style physics (360° movement engine)
Available in 9 languages: English, Portuguese, French, Polish, German, Czech, Dutch, Indonesian, Italian
2 levels + innovative items + extras
You can create your own levels using the built-in level editor
You can make your own custom items, enemies and bosses using our object scripting system
MODdable capabilities
Good performance even on old computers*
This pkg is the latest, and should work in most puppies.

Hi Scottman

The pet in your link downloads as a .gz file. I have tried renaming as a pet but it will not install. I have tried downloading again but it still downloads as a .gz file. Have tried unpacking this with a view to finding the .pet file but had no luck. If the file is supposed to download as a .gz file can you tell me how to install it.

Regards,

Ken.

keniv: Try right-clicking on the link in the first post and using your browser's version of Save As/Save File As to download the file. (I tried clicking on the link normally, and for me it attempted to download as text, rather than binary.) If your browser still saves the file with the .gz extension, rename it to .pet.

Hi Makoto

I tried your suggestion. Unfortunately I still have the same problem in that it still downloads as a .gz file. If I rename it as a .pet then try to install it I get "failed to install". The download file size is correct. Could this be an issue with my browser? I am using Opera.

keniv: If you have another browser around (like Seamonkey, for example), try downloading it using that browser and see if it works. :)

From what I've seen so far, Opera seems to be the biggest culprit in terms of renaming .pet file extensions to .gz, for whatever reason. (.pet files actually are specialized .tar.gz/.tgz files, so apparently, the browser thinks it's being helpful by giving the file a different extension.)

Try this in a terminal, works for me with no browser, will save it to /root unless you open a terminal in a specific directory

Code: Select all

wget http://akita.scottjarvis.com/opensonic-0.1.4.pet

Hello All

Thanks for your suggestions. Have just tried downloading with wget as Geoffrey suggested and the file has downloaded as a .pet. From this and what others have said I guess the original problem was an issue with Opera, however, I have downloaded many pets from links on the forum using my browser and dont remember having a problem before. Thanks for everybodys help.

Regards,

Ken.

The server's (MIME) settings may also have something to do with it - remember how I mentioned above that the .pet file originally tried to download as a text-format file for me, for example. I can't be sure, though. :|
