Did as you suggested but unfortunately it looks as if we will have to move on to your "cunning " plan B.
When I used to GParted to look at the new drive and right clicked on sdb1 the "check" option was greyed out - same with sdb2
With the exception of substituting "b" for "a" ie sdb1 rather than sda1 what I have on screen in GParted is exactly as set out above in my post 16 and of course because I am looking at the new 1TB HDD the unallocated partition is shown now as 697.76 GiB

Doesn't happen when I use Lupu-528.005 to look at NTFS partitions.
I wonder if the version of GParted you are using is too old to handle NTFS partitions?

How about using [the natively included version of GParted run from within]...
The Puppy CD burned&booted using the latest Lupu-528.005.iso

e.g. The partitions are NOT mounted I hope.
I don't expect so because they probably aren't even showing on the desktop, right?
(d) Because you are located in the UK...

2. Plan-B
My "cunning plan".
(a) Download the ISO file for FalconFour's Ultimate Boot CD v4 5...
And make the bootable CD.
(b) Boot the CD...
Choose to load the mini-XP OS.
Run [from the menu] the "Check Disk" program, and use it to scan&fix all of the partitions on your new HDD.

Not being familiar with Torrents I clicked on "direct download" but once I had downloaded the file when I tried to run it what I got was a screen with qbittorent version 2.9.7 and nothing else showing - am afraid I am lost should I be there thought bittorrent was for people who wanted to share files between PCs which is not what I want to get into right now . Can I get the ISO file elsewhere ?

And ran it using my Win2000Pro...
And it installed the torrent downloading program...
But I too couldn't get it to download any ISO file.

Make this bootable floppy disk...
Boot it...
You will be presented with 8 choices of partition...
Made up of 2 physical HDD's...
Each with 4 partitions.
Boot the partition you believe holds the "Windows" folder.
Probably the 1st partition on the 1st physical HDD.
You can do this with the original HDD, fitted internally, because it doesn't make any significant changes, and the old HDD is not faulty, but...
You may want to play safe, and fit the cloned HDD internally and work with that instead.
If it succeeds...
You then know there is nothing wrong with the functionality of the contents of the Windows folder.
Hence the failure to boot XP lies elsewhere.
Perhaps in the HDD boot arrangements.
Or in the partition/file table?->Such things are mostly beyond my ken.
4. As we discussed on the phone...
In my opinion there is probably nothing physically faulty with the old/original HDD.
Still wisest to work on the clone rather than the original.
Probably that program you used has messed up the partition or file tables.
And...
It may be possible to repair the problem by using "TestDisk" run either within Puppy, or from a bootable floppy.
I've forgotten how I made my copy of the floppy.
If you decide to make one, we'd need to figure out how that's done.
