Which Puppy is the best?

Hello, I am new to Puppy Linux, and I don't now which Puppy Linux is the best. Which is the best? Puppy Linux Slacko 5.3.1 or Lucid Puppy 5.2.8? Thank you. |

Neither is better - it depends on what you want and what hardware you have. Slacko has a newer kernel and has compatibility with Slackware packages. It may work better on newer hardware. currently, I'm working with Polar pup to compile qtractor - a qt app. Polar pup is Lucid based. Slacko detect my wireless everytime where as Polar pup needs to be rebooted occasionally to recognize network. the great thing about Puppy is you can have many different versions installed frugally and test which one suites you. _________________ Wiki Audacity 2.0.1 |

for connecting to the internet, but not for compiling qt apps. what I like most is the ability to have several Puppy versions frugally installed

Hi Stefan22! I suggest that for your first puppy you choose the one which comes with your favourite browser pre-installed. That way you can be up and running as soon as you burn the CD. 
Most puppies come with either Seamonkey or FireFox. Some have Opera and some have .pets for installing google's Chrome or the spy-resistant Iron. You can easily install another browser once you have learned your way around. If your first experience with Puppy Linux is productive and worry-free you will get confidence to explore more options later. It really is not important that you put a lot of thought into your first puppy. Unlike the 4-legged ones, you are encouraged to discard our puppies and adopt a new one whenever you feel like a change! 
I've been using Wary, http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=77303 Dpup Exprimo, http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=70399 and Slacko. They are all good. You should indicate the hardware and processor you have, when asking for puppy recommendations. When deciding on your first Puppy, keep a second one in mind as a runner-up, in case your hardware doesn't co-operate well with your first choice. Have fun with Puppy!

I have installed Lucid Puppy 5.2.8. And it's working perfect! Thanks to everyone for responsing in this thread.

As I'm running on an old Compaq Laptop with 64meg ram, Puppy 2.16 is the best for me - even though it's old, linux is great for improvising workarounds for software. I have facebook, chat, games - all with minimum fuss |

Puppy was never designed to run big programs Lucid and Slacko allow me to have Openshot, VLC, a choice of Browsers etc - so we DO run big programs http://puppylinux.org/wikka/PuppyVersionIndex The greatest part of Puppy is being involved in its development by testing, supporting, using, compiling, etc As we speak you can order a cheap motherboard and help in moving Puppy to a new processor http://puppylinux.org/wikka/Puppi Puppy, Linux that Barks
