Latest Version Of Link2 Browser Added To Repositories?

Have finally found a light weight browser for my old PIII 800mhz laptop. Since all the big name browsers dumped there 32 bit support.
Would like to see Link2 2.20.2 the latest version of the web browser added the the Puppy repositories. Current version in the Ubuntu repo is 2.8.

Hi. Welcome to Puppy. Which version of Puppy are you using? Firefox is still making 32bit esr, but I suspect your PC can't handle it as it requires gtk3, & probably 2+GB ram.

I'm using Puppy Tahrpup 6.06, Its old to. I tired Xenial but no programs would load, for some strange reason.
Laptop only has 512mb of Ram and that is max.
Only can do basic pages on Links2, but it is very fast. Wanted to see the newest version posted since I don't know alot about Linux so I don't know how to load programs unless I'm using a Package installer.

I can't find recent links2 code to convert. The lightest decent browser on Puppy is Netsurf. The tahr version is here:

Worth a try. Click on .pet in ROXFiler to install. If you don't have a swap file on your linux partition, making one would help programs to run better.

You are welcome to TEST it.
I think NetSurf is better in some respects.
You should be able to install both and use whichever works best.

Gave Netsurf a try. Wow, it is a lot better in terms of displaying web pages. I will keep it.

Load the Bionicpup64 32bit compatibility sfs
That provides the needed stuff, to run 32bit software in Bionicpup64.

You can get Links2 from the Bionicpup64 Puppy Package Manager (PPM), but it is an older version, not v2.20.2
It is a 64bit version of Links2.

Strange issue with NetSurf. Tried to print something and nothing got printed. I checked Cups and nothing shows up in the printer spooler. I tried printing from another program and it worked.

With Netsurf being a light browser, printing may not work well in some situations. Try printing to cups-pdf (select that as printer), then opening pdf created & printing that. If that fails, try Oscar's links2 .pet above.

They go in /root folder. I just tried cups-pdf again & doesn't work. The test file will print to cups-pdf, but not webpages.
A heavier alternative that may run on your system is peebee's light browser. (Link expired).
Note: a simple way to preserve some of your ram is to edit the boot file (grub.cfg or syslinux.cfg or extlinux.cfg), adding nocopy. It goes in the kernel line as pfix=nocopy. If you already have a pfix entry (i.e. pfix=fsck) amend that to (i.e.) pfix=fsck,nocopy
Will slow the system a little, as less-used files not loaded into ram at boot.

take screenshots of the web pages and work with the images of the pages. Or convert the image to a PDF. might work

Then it is pretty straight forward to print those formats out using an image viewer/editor or the PDF reader.

Gave the light browser a try yesterday, I installed it but it doesn't load. My hard drive flashes a couple of times and that is it.

Sounds like a low ram issue. Did you try the ram free-up suggestion? Another option is to make a swap partition via gparted (caution - if not careful, can lose all data). Also, if you have installed puppy, can run pupswap in a terminal & use some of your disk space (512mb?) - accept the load option when asked & light browser may run.

Your right about the low Ram issue, since it only has 512mb of Ram. It did run but man is slow due to using the swap partition.

I think I switch back to using links2, for speed and it doesn't crash. Hopefully someone will compile the latest version to 32bit for Tahr.
