General Bug that affects all puppies

#1 Post by Saturn »

I did some research and found that not just puppy has this issue, but basically any distro that does not use Hal and some other things I have not discovered yet that may play a role in this....

I don't know how many of you good natured folks have the cash or the time to spend nearly a 100 dollars to amazon, just to view some videos or get free shipping on all their orders

But, for people like me , or any one else that happened to sign up, I've found out that, according to the adobe help article on this issue http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/929/cpsid_92948.html

Flash communicates and uses Hal some how to identify and decrypt a protected DRM video file

while it's true that there are some "DRM - Free" videos to watch on amazon's streaming service, named "Amazon Prime", some really good ones, like a documentary on how evil some business Practices are these days, specifically, one named "Food INC" which is worth checking out, if you have time and money to do so

there are also some that are not DRM'ed like the uk's popular car show "Top Gear"

Anyways I am currently using Fat-dog 64 and would love to see a broader range of some movies/TV shows documentaries that I paid a year's worth all you can eat buffet of entertainment programming, without restriction or having to give up puppy at all

And I am not too sure if this helps, but I would assume that the DRM'ed videos and the one's without have a different format that thaey are encoded in, but all of them use adobe flash for the delivery to your pc, i.e. encoded in avi for normal, non DRM , maybe MP4 as the restricted one, but having these formats as "Containers" and are futher compressed with adobe flash as the deikvery method

Could some one with knowledge of puppy's internals and/or a n understanding of Hal look into this?

I can provide an Amazon Prime account for testing, for free as I am allowed to share my "prime benefits" with 3 people I would just need to enter their email address so they can send you an account setup letter

I look forward to working with all you guys!

Thanks very much in advance!

This flashplayer page may be relevant ...

http://www.macromedia.com/support/documentation/en/flashplayer/help/settings_manager08.html

whilst flashplayer works fine in my Puppy (however I've never tried DRM stuff) the settings manager panels like the one linked to above don't work.

Jamesbond, it may be quite outdated, but it is what adobe uses and calls for
I'd be more than happy if you or any other puppy developer can find a alternative method

Again,
Thank you!

Saturn,

There is an old Hal pet at this repo but it is (deliberately) an incomplete package. I don't know if this helps your situation or not, but it may be worth looking at.

Lupu has libhal and libhal-storage, etc., but does not run the hal binaries. If lucky the libraries could be enough.

You can get the hal package from ubuntu http://packages.ubuntu.com/lucid/hal
Install and reboot - it *might* work
