Puppy Package Manager won't run (SOLVED) |
|
Hello all,
I am loving this flavor of Linux, it even brought back to life a very old laptop that was gathering dust in our loft. I have installed 5.3 on my TravelMate 242LC HDD and all I can say is, WOW!
I am trying my hand with it coming from a WIndows and MAC background and this puppy is really cute.
But I am having trouble with PPM:
I was able to use PPM till yesterday but I most likely have changed some kind of configuration and, whenever I try now to run it it doesn't display the menu at all. I can use Slickpet and even launch the configuration menu for it using the files in the path. Unfortunately, I cannot even start it using the find_cat file in the path or petget from terminal. I have searched on the interwebs and this forum to no avail for 3 hours now.
Can you please enlight me on what to do to use it again?
Thanks in advance,
iluap

Hi darkcity,
This is the output after running the command in the console:
** ERROR **: gtkdialog: Error in line 46, near token '</default>': syntax error
aborting...
No idea what that means...
Thanks in advance.

I found this same error message related to a broken PPM in this thread
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=76279&start=240&sid=3a1c94703a5f5a59d7244be34485d685
I sent a PM to the person having the issue to confirm my understanding of the solution provided but I wonder if anyone else knows what Lobster meant in his solution:
"Boot from DVD and copy code to your frugal install"
I have copied the whole directory to the HDD but I am not sure if I need to replace it completely or only some files or if I need to do anything else. Any ideas?

Iluap- I'm not always sure but, I'd take a chance and overwrite the entire /usr/local/petget directory..

maybe not helpful but . . .
If you've only just recently installed, it might be just as quick to do a reinstall, by booting puppy pfix=ram to create a new save file
even if you don't want to go that route, it wouldn't hurt to boot puppy pfix=ram just to see if the package manager works with the "fresh" setup, as a process of elimination.

Try this patch for PPM
http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?p=625843#625843
Download the ziggy_patch_ppm-1.pet file and install patch by left mouse clicking on file. (viewed in Rox the file manager).
Try running PPM.

the ziggy patch could work,
the places to check are
/usr/local/petget
and
/var/local/petget
---
one method is to boot without savefile, you can then mount the savefile and check any changes in those directories. deleting file will restore to the state in the pupsfs/basesfs.
to avoid loading savefile see-
