VOKOSCREEN so easy to install, now, in 2016

#1 Post by Pelo »

Vokoscreen is a screencapturer. ( =Xvidcap) Pet is available in Archives.org. Further info arrives soon.
The user interface on Vokoscreen isn’t the best, however beauty is only skin deep and functionality is far more important. With Vokoscreen you can record your whole screen, an area of your screen or even a single window very easily. Just select the applicable checkbox for the type of recording you want to do and click start.
Vokoscreen can also record your webcam output and magnify parts of your screen as you record. Under the settings tab (the film reel icon) you can select your frame rate and output format. Vokoscreen supports both .AVI and .MKV output, both of which are compatible for upload to YouTube. You can also pick where your video’s will be stored – by default this location is /home/user/videos.
pet is here
vokoscreen-1.4.5-1-i386.pet: 460 K

It uses ffgtk functionality and also supports recording of audio (over pulse or alsa).

Success ? I need to get audio working...

Success ? I need to get audio working... Image quality is fine, when audio will be operant, that would be not so bad, this Vokoscreen. An alternative to xvidcap.
Polarpup Qt005 is ok, but why ? What are the libs missing in other Puppies , Look and search... I will find.
pulse : something missing here.
mkvtoolnix-2.0.2-1.1.pet seems necessary.

Vokoscreen old fashioned with Puppy Polarpup Qt 005 does its job.
I try the pet on slacko 5.3.3 but even with a Qt SFS (good one?), the poor guy Pelo fails in running vokoscreen.

Hi.

This is Vokoscreen 2.0.0 running in L.A.S.S.I.E. 003 Development Version (Precise 5.7.1 based).

It runs from SFS which was build from the vokoscreen_2.0.0-ubuntu12.04.1_i386.deb.

Missing dependencies like libopencv_highgui.so.2.3 downloaded by Package Manager.

Loaded SFS dependency: LP2_QT-4.8.2.sfs (no, currently not in LazY Puppy Repository)

Though, I did not check if it works properly.

Puppy's tools faits maison Drec (Dpuprec) should be the best

#10 Post by Pelo »

Drec (Dpuprec) should be the best... when it works. It always works excepted some distros. I don't know why. You get a fullscreen video, nice, perfect. Very easy to use. There is a post-processing getting a video, then drec ask you what format and size would you like, and transforms .OGV consequently.
My wish : i keep the file .ogv. (by # insert before rm lines in the script.)
I have adde 852x480 standard youtube format.
Old but nice screencaster.

pAVrecord does the job, but VLC does read the movie. I add Gnome-Mplayer, then it's OK,
VLC still not run the video.
The plus of pAVrecord is you can record only an area of the screen. As Xvidcap

storing large temp files versus realtime encoding

#11 Post by mcewanw »

Hi Pelo,

Yes, Dpuprec also works nicely in my tests. It uses different technology for the actual screencast. Underneath it is using the commandline binary program, whose source is in C programming language, called recordmydesktop:

http://recordmydesktop.sourceforge.net/about.php

As you can see from the above link, there are other frontends available for recordmydesktop, but these tend to be resource heavy.

Dpuprec will probably be more suitable for screencasting than pAVrecord on slower computers because it does not encode the video in realtime (and thus requires less CPU at the actual recording stage). Instead, it first stores the audio and video in relatively raw format and then joins them together afterwords (using ffmpeg for that for the re-encoding) and encodes to bring the filesize back down. There is a disadvantage to that method, particularly if you are making a long screencast in that the temporary files can become very large, which requires either a lot of harddisk space or memory (by default I think the temp files are stored under /tmp, which is in RAM on most Puppy machines). However, for shorter screencasts that isn't an issue. However, some older machines often don't have much harddisk space, and reading and writing to harddisk can be slow.

pAVrecord overcomes that raw file size storage disadvantage by encoding on the fly (in realtime), allowing the user to encode to x264 or some other encoder immediately, which is probably fine on a modern relatively fast/powerful machine. However, x264, is a complex and therefore CPU intensive encoder, so older machines may struggle to keep up in realtime for highest quality recording using pAVrecord (and high compression encoders like x264); main problem then being loss of sync between audio and video and part of video perhaps cut off by the end, since video encoding can't keep up with the audio encoding on slower computers (hence I feel that Dpuprec may be preferred for such machines).

So between Dpuprec and pAVrecord, which to use in a particular circumstance, depends to some extent at least on the speed of the computer. As time goes by, and computers become faster, the issue of encoding in realtime will disappear (except users will no doubt demand even higher resolution, which will slow things down again! :-) )

Hi Pelo,

Could you give me a bit more info. Are you saying that a screencast you record can be played back with gnome-mplayer but not vlc? If so, could you please tell me what video encoder, video bitrate, and screencast framrate you were using. Also, please confirm you were using the latest pAVrecord version 9.0.5 (I seemed to say 9.0.4 in the youtube video you released).

I haven't myself been able to re-test using vlc on my system because I don't have vlc installed at the moment, but I'd like to find out what the problem is. It may be that I need to include a parameter that ensures the audio and video are cut to the same length (-shortest) but I don't want to add that until the problem is confirmed (and hopefully I can duplicate the same problem on my machine). Hope you can help with this test.

Or is it just that the vlc you are using doesn't have the correct decoder compiled in?

mcewanw , rendez-vous sur le topic pAVrecord

#13 Post by Pelo »

mcewanw , rendez-vous sur le topic pAVrecord. I'll write there all the steps with pAVrecord. It's our (secret) workshop, unless other video lovers join the team.
This night, i was testing on french distro, PAVrecord does it well, but we have to get it more 'conviviale' , choosing the area by mouse would be fine.
But technical functions are running without bug.
To answer your doubts about VLC, i think that Puppy-es LXDE miss some libraries, so VLC unable to read till Gnome-mplayer not installed, with ffmpeg stuff.

Vokoscreen is not satisfying a Puppy user, qt and other libs needed.
pAVrecord should do better, soon,
I would like a lot that video users come back, as we are improving our software. I hope that. Developers forgot a little that is distro is not made to compile, but to be used by people,

Ah but Pelo, what you seem to be really looking for is a screencast dedicated app (like Dpuprec). Indeed I already considered the mouse for indicating area of screen to capture but feel that should be in a separate dedicated app or as a 'hijack' addon module for pAVrecord. But, to be honest, it is almost summer here and code developments take a great deal of time, so in the end I restrict myself to my own needs always. And summer means I plan to be out enjoying the sun with my children and not further coding for many months!

Please remember that I have not written pAVrecord itself from the viewpoint of a specialised screencast app - rather it is a very general purpose AV recording app, primarily written for my own needs and for anyone who wants to experiment with different encoders and so on. Hence its user interface, which I would be the first to agree is not really designed as the most 'conviviale' in terms of casual user point and click use for screencast use.

However, pAVrecord can also indeed be viewed as an 'engine', which could be used by a more special purpose screencast app, and I've purposively added the 'hijack' addon module capability to allow others to modify/use its internals for their own purposes (which could include more specialised user interfaces dedicated to a particular purpose) whilst keeping pAVrecord itself intact.

My own personal interest/priority is that I wish next to experiment/code with video motion detection with the idea of possibly coding an addon module concerning that for pAVrecord, but my interests/priorities may change of course, which is how things are in open source, where no one is paying me to code for any particular purpose or deadline (which at least provides me with the freedom to decide). No doubt I'll come back to improving other aspects of the main pAVrecord program later (albeit with a view not to avoid excessive bloat), but not just now, and I personally rather feel that it is better to write a separate specialised app for screencasting alone for all the fancy enhancements that are possible. Also easier to write a specialised version, since the user-interface can be specially tailored for that specialised screencast function. I will consider doing so later since it would be relatively easy for me to cut out the underlying main code functions from pAVrecord (since as the author I know the code back to front), and add specialised user-interface code (and the extra mouse functionality), but I can't say when I'm likely to do so.

Cheers,

William - Scottish (Ecossais?) living in exile. I'm looking forward to reclaimed 'Independence' - but alas there are too many traditional UK Labour supporters in Scotland, who are unlikely to vote 'Yes' (for some reason I do not understand actually)
Pelo wrote:Developers forgot a little that is distro is not made to compile, but to be used by people,
Really, I'm not different at all from many other unpaid so-called 'developers'. I just use the underlying system to write programs for my own interests and needs - that's all, to be honest. I do publish some of what I write, with the hope that some others may find it useful, but I'm not really trying to write users' apps, except that sometimes I polish them up a little because my own family members force me... because they have a use for them on (very rare) occasion! There is generally very little feedback on the published apps anyway, so it is nevertheless nice that you have taken the time to comment, and such feedback certainly does encourage me to make some alterations, but within limits of the time I have available and so on.

VLC needs VDPAU to reed my Vokoscreen videos
VDPAU is supported for decoding since VLC version 2.1.0, and for post-processing and rendering since VLC 2.2.0 (still in development as of late 2013).

VDPAU will be enabled automatically by default in VLC version 2.2.0 onward. Refer to http://www.remlab.net/op/vlc-vdpau.shtml for technical details. (2.2.2 default version provided by Xenialpup)

The following video codecs are supported for decoding: MPEG-1, MPEG-2, MPEG-4 Visual (and possibly H.263), WMV3, VC-1 and H.264 (MPEG-4 AVC). Almost all video codecs are supported for post-processing and rendering.
