I just received a SiliconDust HDTV tuner that puts the output on an IP.

Same as this except that mine came via WOOT:

To SiliconDust's great testimony they provide drivers for Apple, Linux, and MS versions of windows.

They list MythTV on the box for Linux but here's where their Linux link takes you once you bring up the IP address of the device:

Question:

1. Will this work with Puppy or is there something about it that is a problem?

2. Can this be made a PET or SFS?

3. Does this appear to replace the need for MythTV, or is this necessary for MythTV to work with this device?

We have dpup Exprimo 5x14 on the computers here.

pemasu suggested wrapping the stuff for the tuner device in a PET then using MythTV.

I like the MythTV idea since it brings a lot of neat features, e.g. DVR.

I always seem to botch compiling and building PETs so am hoping someone will also want this and create one.

I imagine MythTv is not the easiest package to build - if you are using Exprimo then you could try downloading the ubuntu .deb packages with Gongetit - Menu > Setup > Gongetit then click on the directory containing all the downloaded .deb files and use the right click menus to extract all .debs in folder > then right click the extracted .deb directory and > dir2sfs or dir2pet to build the packages+dependencies for puppy.

This is not guaranteed to create a working package but should be a good start.

I thought he said MythTV was ready to go, just needed the PET for the GTK related to the IP tuner.

I will have another look to be certain.

I have been curious about MythTV for ages, but have never had a need to try it, and I have seen horror stories from ppl trying to get it going.

Today I installed it in Bodhi-1.4, which is Lucid.
No fuss, works well, impressed.
Almost 100MB d/l.

My TV dongle is hiding somewhere, so can't test that.

If I intended getting it happening on Puppy, I would start here.

i also got a silicon hdhomerun 1st version and would like to run it on puppy.i didnt have too much luck with mythbuntu as the picture would freeze at a high frequency then compared to Windows for the same source and it was not watchable

So i definitely would try out if mythtv ran on puppy.

I am getting back to this project ... seems there has been zero activity by others.

I've been plowing through the prerequisites necessary for hdhomerun and MythTV, including MySQL.

Perhaps some of this may render both my SiliconDust TV device and my Hauppauge video interface dongle useful under Puppy - both have been gathering dust for a while.

If anyone has MythTV & their SiliconDust TV via IP working with Puppy (especially, but not exclusively, Exprimo) please share that info!

The SiliconDust links state that they will update the MythTV info but that's been up for months - no update - so I am trying to follow other instructions from the Ubuntu and other online posts.

I wish I had an answer for MythTV. Actually I wish I had an answer for viewing HDTV in any way. I've managed to compile mythTV from source and gotten to the point where its asking me where I live and if I speak english or not.

My problem right now is that its looking for mysql to be running and while I see that its "installed" *I click delete installed packages and its listed as a package thats installed.

I'll be danged if I can figure out what a Database engine has to do with watching the boob tube but... Does anyone know anything about the Puppy mysqld and how to get it to do anything other then complain about users and files that aren't there?

Maybe a better question is this. Does anyone know of a simpler HDTV tuner card program? I'm determined to get over the air HDTV working but... Two or more heads are better then one.

There are fragments of mostly incomplete efforts but no one with the necessary skills has seemed to take this seriously and bring it to conclusion with a robust solution as with wifi devices.

It seems that what is needed is a base app plus a folder of drivers for the various devices.

There is also a problem with USB conversion dongles from Hauppauge and Siig which prevent using Puppy to convert old tapes to a digital format - same need - a core app with a folder of drivers.

Perhaps there is something in the Ubuntu world? I have loaded upup Raring 3.9.9 and that should open up access to some new repositories.

I have a hdhomerun dual channel box with one end to an OTA antenna and the other to my wireless router. I have several different systems that use this device. These are my experience and opinions about this device.

Xbuntu ( 64 bit with 64 bit ATI drivers) laptop used the Ubuntu Software Repository to download the hdhomerun_config app. Easiest to setup and watch with no configuration. Basic scan , channel selection and play using GUI. Recording requires using the command line.

Opecelec XBMC (64 bit with 64 bit ATI driver) comes with hdhomerun device support. You just need to set hdhomerun from the menu to watch video streams. tvheadend is the easiest PVR frontend to setup for this system.

Fatdog64-621 (64 bit with 64 bit ATI driver ). I had problems creating a live usb system. It couldn't find my savefile. It took a day of research to find the fix ( waitdev=x ). You need to load the developement SFS and go to the SiliconDust site to download the Linux hdhomerun config files as a tarball. You need to unpack, compile, make and install, There was an script error that needed fixing. The hdhomerun_config and hdhomerun_config_gui works the same as the Xbuntu.
It is annoying that the clock is wrong and can't be set as UTC time.
Kind of important for scheduling recording jobs.

Is there a way to create PET or SFS with everything necessary to Fatdog64 and LightHouse64?

I have LightHouse64-B2 loaded on my laptop and would really like to actually finally use my hdhomerun.

If not perhaps someone associated with the LH64 project might leverage what you have learned to create a PET or SFS?

I took a quick look at making a PET file. The pet creator requires a working "make install". The problem is the install script failed and I wound up doing the install manually.

I saw some posts concerning, freezing and tearing. I first tried using Slacko 5.5 with 32 bit ATI driver and got severe tearing. It just wasn't fast enough. FATDOG64 hdhomerun 1080 video is rock solid with xload around 70%.

It is a shame you haven't gotten it to work at all because it is an amazing device. Try the Windows version just to check that your hardware is working. You can download the Windows installation EXE file from SiliconDust > Support.

I searched YouTube under "hdhomerun setup" and all the hits were people describing setup and operation under Windows Media Center.

The Windows HDhomerun GUI is much superior to the Linux hdhomerun_config_gui.

I don't use any Microsoft version of windows at all, I dislike the company or the interface - I'm a Linux-only guy.

Could you post a paint-by-numbers set of instructions to manually install in FatDog64 (which I am guessing is essentially the same as LH64 - so it should work there as well), please?

Presume that I won't guess right about any - even minor - step.

It would be real-awesome to get this working!

You need to ask the FATDOG64 team to help you with installation since it will depend on your specific hardware. It took me days to get fatdog installed. Lots of trial and error and I am not sure what really worked. Strange, since I have had no problems building live-usb systems for the exact same hardware using Slacko and Lucid.

I'm having an odd problem with a wifi nic in a Dell laptop when using Wheezy and upup Raring but not Lucid - I wonder what changed?

When you refer to "live USB" what devices are you running successfully?

I have SIIG and Hauppauge dongles for converting from analog to digital which LH64 refuses to even to recognize.

I also have a Terratec SDR USB device that is also not recognized by LH64.

None of the three play nicely with upup Raring either.

I have no idea how to proceed.
