Can't avail the LAN (RJ 45) port.

#1 Post by Antipodal »

But, until I haven't got the Internet connection working through that port I won't assemble a hard disk.

I have assembled a P4 631+ (Cedar Mill) 3 Ghz, ASUS P5G41T-M LX3 motherboard with KVR1333D3S8N9/2G RAM, and a Samsung DVD /reader with Lupu 511 in it. I connected this system's LAN (RJ 45) port to one of the LAN ports of a TP-Link 150 Mbps Wireless Router.
As you can see I'm only using primary storage devices.

After booting into Puppy I clicked on the connect icon on the desktop and the Internet Connection Wizard informed:
No dial up modem detected
No network interfaces detected
The detailed network interface information was the following:
Interfaces
Hostname: puppypc
External IP:

I have used the "Internet by wired or wireless LAN" of the Wizard to access the "Load module" button of the Puppy Network Wizard and the "Simple Network Setup" window but I haven't been able to load a module that allows me detect new interfaces.
I haven't tried with all the modules
I have tried to execute the contents of the resource CD that is packed with the router but that didn't solve the problem.
The router seems to be working well because a temporary visitor is using his laptop with it and has no problems.
Should I run the "Support DVD" that comes with my motherboard to see if I can avail the LAN (RJ 45) port ?
Do you have any questions or suggestions?

Well written post!

I think I'd check the BIOS Setup to see if there is some way to turn it on or off. I've never seen it myself on a computer I worked on, but I'd still look.

You can see if you can identify the LAN device by name and model. Then look it up in this forum and/or on the internet. There could possibly be a driver you need to manually load. (this might be very simple)

The command lsmod will show if a driver is loaded, but I doubt it is.

I suppose if it were me, I'd want to spend no more than one day on the problem. Time is valuable and well supported NIC cards are cheap.

As Bruce says, it look as though you need to enable the on board chip in the BIOS.
I believe that board uses an Atheros lan chip.
