Slacko 5.3.3.2 alpha (shooting for 5.3.4)

#1 Post by 01micko »

Slacko is in the next cycle

This is alpha2 from the recent woof.

It has k3.2.22. It is from the LTS kernel branch which I intend to follow until it reaches EOL.

There are bugfixes and enhancements applied since 5.3.3 but that doesn't mean new bugs haven't been introduced, especially since it's the latest woof.

Download

Known issues
-pupcontrol is still the same, radky has offered to make a woof ready slacko update.. either that or FatDogs's control panel (I'll make a pet soon for that for comparison)
-pburn help
-arrgghhhh.. transmission segfaults, get a fresh copy from ibiblio
- Broadcom may be suspect, I can't test, my only broadcom works flawlessly with brcmsmac
-some things slightly broken for new kernel, nvidia drivers etc. Try shinobar's getnvidia, worked for me. Similar for radeon would be cool.

Changelog
Since A1

coreutils now slackware version, sort -V
transmission update 2.51 upx'd
mtpaint update, add screenshot and help (playdayz)
xwd added
firstrun-2.2 (shinobar)
/etc/profile adjusted (shinobar)
remasterpup2 bugfix
yasis icons (menu trouble)
silver-marble icons added
full udev (slackware) replacing cut udev (eps issue, not resolving all partitions, report please)
Update kernel to 3.2.22 (iwlwifi and logitech m --> y, plus added some webcam and dell modules, ty rjbrewer)
pupradio updated
peasypdf added (rcrsn51)
peasyprint added
peasyscale added
peasyscan added
slickpet updated, mesa issue, sfs pane empty (known issue: kernel source wont work until rc/final, need to update samba, libre)
matroska mapping bugfix (jamesbond)
known issue: pburn help, waiting on zigbert's update
glib pet renamed to glib2 to avoid dependency troubles

woof updated at 28 June, since then it's only ARM related anyway

------------------------
Since 533

zigbert updates
- pmusic-2.6.3
- pburn-3.6.1
- pfilesearch
- pfind-5.0
shinobar updates
- sfs_load-1.9.6
- get-flash-1.1

other

- gnome-mplayer-1.0.6 (playdayz)
additions
- mesa (why the iso is ~20M bigger)
bugfix
- aufs-util (critical)
removed
- ui-ziggy, PPM (not working, ui-classic works ok)

Todays woof2 - including many updates since 533(see the blog)
Enjoy testing!

Maybe just me not used to Slacko?
I guess it does not mount the HD that
one do frugal install to automatically
because it gave some warning about
that partition being owned and it did not load it
by Rox. So I had to go to Pmount and try again.

Finally it did load. Maybe I am too stupid.

I tested SM I 'm using it now and Flash works.
I reused my old savfile. Maybe that makes the test
less of value? Have to run.
I use Google Search on Puppy Forum
not an ideal solution though

Just a quick run, live pfix=ram before I get some sleep. All basics... internet, sound and display all working and correct on initial boot. Other than a couple of missing icons in the menu.... Gnome MPlayer and PMirrorget ..... no problems have reared their ugly heads yet.

Thanks Mick. :)
No obvious worries.
This morning I was in Slacko 5.3.3 and somehow I was getting no code being displayed in wiki or geany just showing tiny boxes for text or on websites were code was meant to be displayed - Nada, rein, nothing!

Weird. Some sort of font thing.

I installed Chromium and was OK. I think it may have been something to do with an installation of many fonts pet.

Anyway back to 5.3.3.1
I notice some new Jwm styles, very nice, I would recommend some more dark on light, such as gradient bluish as these are the easiest to see for most people. Also the sun and clouds wallpaper would make a great default. 8) Nice!

Does anyone have a later Transmission than 1.20
that supports magnets? The later Transmission in 5.3.3 slickpet did not work with magnets. To use Transmission libevent.lib (I think it is) is also needed.

Another thing in 5.3.3 Flash when downloaded tended to freeze about 3/4 into youtube vids. Does anyone know which Flash is working best?

Have updated wiki front page for now.

Screeny (under graphics) needs xwd is that being provided - there is a screensaver in Mtpaint - and I think you have a script that makes use of mtpaint screensaver?

8)

Made a new Slacko-5.3.3.1-SCSI optical disk...
Booted it and updated the slackosave file from 533 to 533.1
Everything looks good.
GetFlashPlayer now works. when it didn't before. :D
Used it to install FlashPlayer, which now works, but without sound->[trying to fix sound at the moment].
Fixed it! I had the power adapter unplugged from the mains.
With a bit of adjustment in Retrovol mic and headphones are now both good and loud enough.
Hmmm...I'm seeing the icyos2 Puppy videos, but there's a Google advert superimposed.
I'll install some Firefox add-ons.

Upgraded my main Slackosave, a 512MB one originally created in Slacko 5.3.2.8. Once it had got to the desktop it showed the firewall as disabled and it couldn't see either of the machine's network devices. After a reboot, however, it seems to be working normally.

I see that mtPaint is still v3.40, v3.44.03 has been out for a while, you can get it from the forum thread here.

Hi 01micko,

Frugal: light testing with nothing new to report.

Multi-session CD/DVD: medium testing - when using the save icon there is a spurious error message on rebooting - (there was an easy fix which I (or Sylvander) can find if it might help).

General: all probably fine, though, unimportantly, I don't personally understand the new Mesa system and any interaction with Slickpet > Drivers.

My regards

Addendum: withdrawn as duplicated finding.

Looks good so far. I did install the new NVIDIA driver using the getnvidia pet and it works fine.

My usb wireless mouse receiver/transmitter is not recognized upon boot. It has to be removed and replaced and then is recognized. This has happened several times with pemasu's distributions with different kernels. I have no idea as to how the problem was solved.

Continuing to have fun with it.

Cheers, :D

Slacko 5.3.3.1 alpha

#12 Post by Billtoo »

More testing:
I added the slackware repos to ppm and updated them, closed and
reopened ppm.
Downloaded kdegames (which also downloads qt-470) and when that was
finished I needed to download one more lib (also in slackware repo)
and kdegames works great.
I thought I'd give pemasu's new vlc-201 a try so I installed his
ivtv-firmware-1.4.0-8.6.pet,vlc-2.0.1-deps-dpup.pet,and
vlc-2.0.1-dpup.pet.
It works great and supports the pvr card in this pc, thanks again
pemasu.

EDIT: Drat, vlc quit working, can't get it working again, thankfully it still works in exprimo and precise puppy.

Manual frugal install to hard drive.
Reboot with save file to hard drive.

menu->Graphics->Screeny Capture Windows and FullScreen:
Will not run
Get this error message.
# screeny
error: install xwd package for your distro
#

Desktop icon Switcher:
Silver-Marble
No icon examples shown. Just symbols with red X in center.

On first reboot after making a save file.
SFS-Load on-the-fly program pops up.
No explanation as to why or what it is for.
(new user would be lost and confused)

Setup icon on desktop->PupControl:
PupControl->Settings->PupControl Preferences
Many of the items do not have a default selection.
Because of this, items will not show in PupControl tabs until a program is selected for that item.
This is a long standing problem with PupControl. Some program needs to be initially set in preferences for each item to show in the tabs.
(something for the developer of the Puppy version to do. He knows what programs will be in it)

Grub4dos Bootloader has two entries:
menu->System
menu->System->System status and Config

menu->Utility->Icon Browser
This program runs, but does not seem to do anything. What is it suppose to do?

Any chance of updating Gparted?
The latest version is 0.12.1

Broadcom wl driver support

#15 Post by peebee »

I've compiled the Broadcom wl driver for the new kernel and have added it to my pet attached to:

http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=76495

Includes the rerwin logic to use the most appropriate Broadcom driver for the various chip versions.

Pristine frugal install onto my HP550 - all seems fine so far.....notice that the jwm tray settings (height & iconify) are not quite the same as 5.3.3......

Cheers

Oh...this has been solved already. I have posted about the fix couple of times. Barry Kauler included the needed change to his latest precise kernel. I have it in new kernels.

bigpup and others.

xwd was an oversight, added to list.

Pupcontrol may be on the chopping block. I do like the FatDog control panel. We'll see.

Mtpaintsnapshot script is missing, fixed for next. May update mtpaint.

As for gparted, I'm leaving it until Slackware goes next version, as I am a lot of apps, maybe abiword will get recompiled. The reason is that 13.37 libs are getting older. I did the full update to my woof tree to catch any Slackware security fixes, there were in fact a few updated libs.

Jim1911

I may have to recompile the kernel with the wait-usb patch for your wireless desktop issue. IIRC you had this problem when I was 'kernel hopping' in one of the early betas for 533 with k3.2.2. Funny, k3.1.10 series doesn't have the patch, the kernel devs do some weird stuff sometimes. Also, doesn't your laptop need that iwlwifi module I missed?

-

peebee

Thanks for keeping up with broadcom stuff. I will be recompiling the kernel soon, keep you posted.

-

Thanks everyone.

PS: CONFIG_HID_LOGITECH_DJ=m -----> =y , got it, thanks pemasu

I think that's the one for the laptop. I'll wait to try laptop after your next release.

Re using FatDog control panel, if you go that way, please make it single click and also include drive icon management.

Slacko 5.3.3.1 alpha

#19 Post by Billtoo »

I started with a fresh savefile, installed the devx, kernel source, and
proprietary nvidia driver.
I downloaded qt-everywhere-opensource-src-4.7.3-i686.pet and
qt-everywhere-opensource-src_DEV-4.7.3-i686.pet from the slacko pet
packages on Ibibio (via nluug) and installed them.
Then installed pemasu's ivtv-firmware-1.4.0-8.6.pet +
vlc-2.0.1-i686.pet that I compiled tonight in slacko 533.

Vlc works again, pvr support too.

Yippee :)
