5.3.3.1 (& 5.3.3). Is it me?! (Yes!)
The no-sound issue and this version of overly expansive retrovol is driving me crazy. How about a simple mixer for simple folk? In a rare diversion onto an Intel board, unable to get any sound by any subterfuge*. The tray icon constantly remains mute and so does the sound whether I stick to 'native' or run ALSA. Cannot see all of the retrovol screens in 1024x768 even using the ALT+drag-edge method. This is such a good distro, I'd like to use it as my default in all locations, but...
Too much to twiddle from boot-up, not enough time to devote to it.
* - a typical Intel issue.

Much Later:
Back to AMD; most of above issues disappeared, others manageable. In answer to my own question, vide supra, upgrading a FULL to 5.3.3.1 from 5.3.3 yields an hideous mess of a mixture. Not a problem - quicker to wipe and re-install - that's the benefit of a compact distro. Any chance of propagating 5.3.3.1 onto thinslacko? Good things come in small packages...

Forgot I was using Alpha software.
Pretty good going I would say . . . 8)

. . . however . . . tried to press configure and get other depositories of software in ziggy and classical views of PPM.

I could not.
All I want is xcowsay (yesterday) and Gimp 2.8 (today)

The other thing I am having problems with is our old nemesis (Flash)
Booh!
. . . basically vids are playing to about 3/4's and then jamming up resources.

Sorry shino, already uploading next version, the rox additions missed the boat, but I do have .mkv fix already.

Also, mtpaint is updated, with the former mtpaintsnapshot.sh and playdayz help integrated, without the root hack, which failed for me anyway, also screeny is fixed, handy for window shots in a hurry.

New kernel k3.2.22 is compiled and source uploaded. Fixes include ilwifi, logitech and dell fixes (thanks to rjbrewer).

There are still some bugs, I'll wait for the next pburn to fix the help issue.

Sage, I haven't dealt with sound or vesa issues yet, they are next.

I'll announce when it's all uploaded (~40 mins)

Thanks for reports so far.

5.3.3.1

These may be corrected in 5-3.3.2 but in 5-3.3.1

mesa-7.10.2-s will NOT install. Tried from both PPM and direct from ibiblio Slacko repo. Downloads just fine, just won't install!

mesa-7.9.2 did install after a bit of a fuss with xorgwizard.

As for mesa... if you run programs like Google-Earth, it makes a world of difference in speed.

Screensaver Control (On & Off) is not consistant in its function.

WiFi (wlan0) setup fine but dropped after a few hours of use and reboot was required to get it back online. This has been pretty much the case with ALL recent Puppy versions, not just Slacko. (Linksys AE1000 stick, Belkin 300 router, using the rt2800usb package) eth0 works just fine.

Other than those few things, 5-3.3.1 works very well as far as I've tested, graphic clarity is the best yet...

Downloading 5.3.3.2 now.

Indian,

Mesa is already in the iso, so it's not surprising you can't install! It's documented on the first page :)

As for wireless issues, I have found in the past that slowing the rate can significantly stabilise flakey connections. It's usually due to poor driver performance.

I had the particular issue of very flakey wireless in earlier puppy kernels with the rtl-8187 module but since then they have been fixed,

I used this code: (credit @tempestuous)

Code: Select all

echo "iwconfig wlan0 rate 5.5M fixed" >> /etc/rc.d/rc.local
(starts when machine boots)

I know it seems slow but it's probably faster than your internet so the only time it will affect is on LAN browsing/transfers. You can try 11 instead of 5.5 or even higher if you are adventurous.

Hmmm... interesting, guess I should have read the first page? However, I wonder why Google-Earth ran like a snail until I was able to get the 7.9 mesa installed??? after that it literally fly's, makes one wonder??

I'll have to play with the Internet WiFi sometime when I have more time (downloaded info) thanks for the tip!

I think Mesa is broken too. After my 5.3.3 cacked itself and I did a clean re-install Mesa failed from the slickpet(?) drivers tab and likewise if I got the pet from ibiblio. Downloads ok but the install fails and sorry I can't remember the error message.

Hi,

The 'Personalize - Settings' application is not properly translated. I made some corrections but was unable to use them in Slacko. Maybe the new .mo file should be in a directory different than /usr/share/locale/es/LC_MESSAGES ?
