OpenGL Renderer : Gallium 0.4 on AMD JUNIPER

Booting with parameters nomodeset pfix=vesa and Display Properties is working ... maximum : 1024x768 pixels

Waitng with patience for ati_catalyst_driver pet to reach better resolution

Huh? I tested the multisession DVD here, no problem.
Questions:
1. Do you use DVD+RW (that's the only I tested and confirmed to work)
2. How do you start the multisession? Here's how I do it:
- boot with livedvd
- shutdown - when asked about savefile, I tick the "save as multisession" and choose /dev/sr0
- reboot
- when the boot prompt comes back again, I typed "savefile=direct:multi"
Thanks JamesBond.

I have been so used to using Live media in the "old" Puppy tradition, that I discounted the need to use the "savefile" parm on boot. I just (wrongly) assumed ....

Yes the savefile parm does avoid the problems.

Is the savefile going to be a replacement for the older method or is this for current debug and shakedown testing?

DVD-R also works. So your documentation should be updated and the DVD+RW reference could be removed.

Thanks for all the good stuff you and Kirk are doing.

Sounds good! I'm going to make the nvidia.pet, but I think I'll upload shinobar's getnvidia to the pet repo too (in case newer nvidia version is released etc).
Requests for final release.
1. Faster loading of pmount (it takes about 35 seconds to load on my hardware).
That means a full re-write of the script ... may not be in time for final. Pmount today is still the same Pmount from Puppy days (521 days too), except for minor changes supporting multiuser. Anyway, I leave pmount more as a fallback rather than for regular use. Is there a situation where the standard drive icons doesn't work? No, standard drive icons work fine, however, I prefer to have a clean desktop and use pmount as needed.
2. Include Frisbee.
This one will be quite hard ... please see kirk's post above mine, see what we can do to improve wpagui instead.
3. Include Woof “Desktop drive icon manager

There is a lot of horse-power exposed by this distro. And, it is obvious that a log of brain-power went into the making of this.

Thanks for the great-great work being done here.

The distro ONLY suffers from a single thing that I think would make every 64bit user (newbies, Apple users, Windows users, experienced users, etc) of this distro START with an immediate feeling of control:

The addition of a FATDOG-600 Localization Screen. This would/could follow in the efforts put forth by the good work of BarryK or Shinobar's version. It opens the first use of the desktop so that the user "SEE's" their local settings with controls for OOTB adjustments.

Experienced Linux users are comfortable searching for this stuff now buried in the Control Panel you provide. BUT, existing new users and exsiting users coming from current PUPs have become comfortable with the technology that is mentioned.

"FATDOG600 Initial User Localization" would be bringing this same kind of ease of use Puppy branding that we've become accustomed to since the changing from text based system starts to today's boot to desktop services we now enjoy.

Please consider the benefit this brings

Happauge PVR-150 works and shows cable tv. Wireless worked. My wireless chip is RT8187 [Realtek]. The brand is Rosewill USB but I don't think that matters. Other realtek wireless chips probably work.

Hostname processing would benefit by a logoff. The X desktop restart does some of it, but the logoff addresses all of it that are used by most Linux apps. See results below.

Is the savefile going to be a replacement for the older method or is this for current debug and shakedown testing?
This will be the way to go. If you use LiveDVD exclusively and do not want to type this at every boot, you can make a remaster and add the parameter to the isolinux.cfg (you will be asked to do this during remaster). For final at least you won't get a kernel crash if you forgot to type that boot parameter.
DVD-R also works. So your documentation should be updated and the DVD+RW reference could be removed.
Thanks, document updated now.
No, standard drive icons work fine, however, I prefer to have a clean desktop and use pmount as needed.
Noted. I won't be updating pmount now; not enough time and also I prefer not to make big untested changes near final release.
Ability to remove drive icons, and get rid of floppy drive icon (have no floppy drive).
I added option to fatdog event manager not to display drive icons. Nothing specific to floppy, though - it's all or nothing.
fpm-mirror-choice is not present, fatdog-package-manager.sh is not present at that location, see Pfind results below.
I checked - the filesize and file date of fatdog-package-manager.sh looks old and wrong. Are you sure you're using the correct initrd?
The addition of a FATDOG-600 Localization Screen. This would/could follow in the efforts put forth by the good work of BarryK or Shinobar's version. It opens the first use of the desktop so that the user "SEE's" their local settings with controls for OOTB adjustments.
Comment:
1. From another viewpoint: having to enter all these when one just want to use a throwaway live session is a hassle.
2. Putting in shinobar's/Barry's work is not just a plug-in, a lot has changed under the hood. Plus we need to consider multiuser stuff too - which one of these settings are global and which one are per-user? Etc. A lot of thinking and effort required to address this properly.

To Gobbi:
- network wizard hangs after alsa-mixer hdmi unmute: I can't help because I don't have HDMI
- "display property problem" - Probably your radeon is too new :) I'm using radeon open source drivers and display properties works ....

EDIT:
gcmartin wrote:When I boot live, then Menu>Network>Terminal Server Client;

Ah, I find the culprit. You need to copy /usr/X11R7/bin/Xnest from devx; then XDCMP option will be enabled.

Final will be released in 24 hours time. This will bring a conclusion to Fatdog64 600 after 6 months of development.
Please let me/kirk know of any major showstopper problems. We can live with minor problems

Would it be possible to keep the nice boot splash image of Fatdog wich appears in the downloaded wersion in the the new custom versions that one rematers :?:
It's not so important but if it's not so difficult ... The logo is too nice to be left out , in my opinion...

Tried to boot on win 7 64bit computer. Boot process starts but only get black screen - no desktop - I tried several of the Pfix parameters and still no luck

HP Pavillion dm-4-2070 laptop

screen resolution 1366x768
Intel HD graphics 3000 with up to 1696 mb shared memory

any ideas as to what my problem might be?

If the boot sequence completes and then it turn black , put boot parameter : '' nomodeset pfix=vesa '' . Maybe a video driver problem ...
If it turn s black and not even a message error show up :

If you have any USB drive attached , it will do so... Pull out the USB drive!
Did you check if the image was burned with no errors ? I mean you did not burned it with windows burner ...if so , you better use Imgburn ( open source) , or do it in Linux !

Also take a look in BIOS at boot order priority...
Try it on another PC !

I compiled some programs and did a remaster, I added
qt-482,xinelib-1.22,xineui-0.97,umplayer,smplayer,smtube,MPlayer-1.1,and cmus.
Also the proprietary nvidia driver.
The iso is 328mb
It booted up on another pc which has nvidia graphics card and works
fine on that pc.
I booted it up on a pc with intel graphics and got a black screen but
I entered xorgwizard a couple of times and then xwin, it went to the
desktop and everything is working fine except glxgears doesn't work.
I used gparted to resize the hard drive and added a new partition.then
used the fatdog installer to install to the new partition, logged off
creating my new savefile.
Next boot it offers a choice of savefiles to load, the first partition
has an older fatdog install on it, I chose the new install and it
booted up to the desktop.

You are correct, I was picking up b2 installed on a separate partition. Do you know of any changes that could be made to the menu.lst to assure that the correct partition is loaded? The correct save file was loaded. My solution was to delete the b2 installation.

Code: Select all

title Fatdog64-600 RC(sdb5/fatdog64-600)
  find --set-root --ignore-floppies --ignore-cd /fatdog64-600/initrd
  kernel /fatdog64-600/vmlinuz savefile=direct:device:sdb5:fatdog64-600/fd64save.ext4
  initrd /fatdog64-600/initrd
Thanks,
Jim

Instead of using "find --set-root" use "root (hdx,y)"

It looks like you are using sdb5, so you probably want "hd(1,4)"
