Fatdog64-600 Final (July 2012)

Thanks very much to kirk and jamesbond for this amazing distro!

I'm still using the rc but will upgrade, I'm running my remaster on a
fast 4gb flash drive with a 1gb savefile, no problems :)

Just downloaded the new distro and so far it's working great except for one thing (please excuse my noobness)...

Can anyone tell me how to open a file from firefox in fatdog64-600? I have read the manual and faqs and spent a few hours trying to figure it out. I tried the spot thing suggested, didn't work, I also tried changing the config file from firefox -spot to just firefox with the exec parameter, that doesn't work for me either. Other programs seem to load files from my data drive (internal) on my laptop, but not ff.

I have just burnt a live cd and loaded that so not using any sfs or save files yet. All I want to do is to read the file, I'm not trying to write anything and I put it in the suggested location for spot and copied it to the desktop, so I know it's there, but it won't give me permission to read, when I use the open file command from the ff menu.

I don't know what else to do or where else to look for information, so if someone would be kind enough to point me in the right direction, I'll go and spend another few hours trying to figure it out. Is it really this difficult?

Also the forum did not remember my change of password and blocked me out for half an hour. So I've spent about four hours just trying to upload some files to you and log in to the forum.

Anyway, you FatDog64 users, hope you like the wallpapers I made, and thanks to the chaps for taking the time to do the distro.

I'm a little bit frustrated to say the least, so apologies if I sound a bit cranky, but it's been a long session and the last thing I needed was having to reboot back into windows (where I had just rebooted from into FatDog, coz that's where I did the graphics).

And sorry if I posted things in the wrong section, feel free to move, now I'm going to catch some sleep.

Anyway, this was just my way of saying thanks for the new distro - enjoy!

I've got a few more that I'm working on, so if people like them, who knows, I may upload some more ;-).

Cheers.

2 quick questions

Has anyone attempted the older virtualbox build script found here in 600Final?

And has anyone build the latest truecrypt (7.1a) for any of the recent FT Betas or RCs?

dvd+rw-format -force /dev/sr0
Thanks...
I now have that recorded in my "Commands" text file on a Flash Drive, for possible future use. 8)

Still works.

I haven't tried, others?

I don't get it, what exactly are you trying to do?

Ruff-Boy maybe one need to mount that drive that the file is on.
And even add it as a file for Firefox to open in case that is not obvious?

I apologize if I have misunderstood what you talk about.
As JameBond indicate in his answer above maybe try
to describe where you are at that moment and what you click on?

My experience is that sometimes one need to do mount first.
Either using menu Files and Mount or using the Terminal some
CLI code that do such mounting,

If this "All I want to do is to read the file" is how you boot then
one most likely has to mount the partition that the file is on.
Or maybe even move the file to the spot directory?

Haha it took me some 30 minutes to find my old post from June 15 about it.

Is this what you talk about?

The easier way for me where to move my html file from home to spot!
I had a html file on my HD that I wanted to use as a bookmark page
that could be loaded in the Browser and the only way to do it where
to move it from / or /mnt/home to /spot

If I talk about something entirely other you have to describe it in other
words so somebody get what it is all about :)

Older text explaining it.

JameBond says:

Fatdog runs the browser as spot. Spot does not have access to your sda2
(by design). If you don't like this, edit /usr/local/bin/defaultbrowser and change "seamonkey-spot" to just "seamonkey".
So that could explain why you could not use that file. Or none of us get what you talk about?

I have the same problem. I cannot import the bookmark.html file to firefox even the file has been copied to the directory /root/spot/. I also cannot open the bookmark.html file from the menu:file/open file/.

Is there any other methods to import the bookmark file to firefox?

Because Firefox is running as the user spot, you must make your bookmarks file owned by spot.

Code: Select all

chown spot:spot bookmarks.html
Then it will import.

I had better results saving my bookmarks as a json file, then using Restore instead of Import.

(a) How should I do that?
I don't know how to import bookmarks using html file, or restore either.
I have a bookmarks-2012-06-03.json backup file.

(b) I had "Firefox sync" in use, but lost the "Recovery key" for my sync account...
[Old PC hardware failed, and don't have a recent backup of my password vault, that includes the Firefox sync Recovey key]. :(

Use the same procedure.
1. Copy the .json file into /root/spot.
2. Run: chown spot:spot bookmarks-2012-06-03.json
3. In Firefox, go to Bookmarks > Show all Bookmarks > Import and Backup > Restore > Choose File

I'm working as root...

But your instruction = "3. In Firefox, go to Bookmarks > Show all Bookmarks > Import and Backup > Restore > Choose File" did the trick.

Thanks you so much. :D

Use the same procedure.
1. Copy the .json file into /root/spot.
2. Run: chown spot:spot bookmarks-2012-06-03.json
Or you can put your bookmarks file in the Downloads folder and start Firefox/Seamonkey. When Firefox/Seamonkey starts it chowns everything in Downloads to owner spot.

Kirk thanks
I guess the FAQ tells it or you have told us in other posts?
This
Or you can put your bookmarks file in the Downloads folder
Does that goes into the savefile then? While if I have such files on /mnt-system
then it is only on the HD and not in savefile?

Thanks to rcrsn51 for explaining the cown thing. Not that I can use it
I am not that clever but that where what I thought that Ruff-Boy needs to know.

I put the bookmarks file in Downloads then I try to edit it with composer then save the file in spot. Then I import the bookmarks file easily .

Some of teh problems and missings still exist with the GA version.

Anyone else noticed the "mount command in bash for CIFS resources" problem? Is there a circumvention?

I had three lockups last night when using FD64-600, seamonkey version. It didn't actually stop working but it did slow down so much that it almost did. It also looked like it was driving the processor pretty hard too.

I think I may have been using seamonkey each time this happened. I have placed all of my profile files outside on /mnt/home/profiles/sm210 then created another profile in seamonkey to access them. Might this be the problem?

I'm not into this spot thing, I'm a root man that's why I use Puppy. I run as root and run seamonkey as /usr/bin/seamonkey not /usr/bin/seamonkey-spot

Edit: It appears it may be my new 3TB USB HDD. It doesn't seem to have the same problem with Saluki 012. It's a NTFS drive. Ctrl+Backspace and a restart of xwin cures the problem for a while, anyway. Any ideas?

Bugger, this is a show stopper.
