This message is harmless. Jim1911 encountered this before and I think I discussed this in alpha2 thread (I can't find the post now ...). But if libreoffice cannot start, delete this: "NLP Solver" and "Wiki Publisher" extensions. There seems to be some known problems with certain Java versions.
I have no idea where to find these extensions so I can delete them.

I have compiled and installed the Nvidia driver and it seems more stable now. Maybe it wasn't the 3TB USB HDD after all.

Thanks

I have mixed feelings about the humongous initrd. On the hard disk, it does speed booting. On DVD it may take a long time or hang. This was even on the same drive which burned the disk and verified it. It appears there are common errors the OS can deal with, but the BIOS cannot. I recommend using the small initrd for actual ISOs.

I've also booted on another AMD machine, which took extra time, but succeeded.

Thanks a lot for all the replies. I will have a look through when I am not so tired again. I learned a lot of things myself that I should have taken the time to do before posting. I did admit to being a noob.

These are just a few things I noticed in the last hours since we talked:

This version loads the sfs file for the all in one audio extension beautifully. I got it to boot off a usb. Magic.

Once Opera is installed it does not show in the menu for 'internet' but does when you right click on desktop. Also there is a constant crash/bug? where changing the background image for the speeddial window makes opera die. Every time.

When making a USB stick install I had to use the 'local' option as 'usb' did not work. Sorry if this is just my ignorance. just saying.

The ethernet and wireless work perfectly - a bit too good. I had to disable the wireless because it was picking up bt crap and conflicting with the dns options I had made.

I made a backup of my super fast flawless install using ReDo, and it only took about two minutes, also to restore to an 8gb sdcard. I have rarely witnessed such perfect backups, working so fast, ever. Kudos.

Had to re-install Audacity and Inkscape, because they do not install well from .pet. Had to use the excellent built in software manager which recognises dependencies. You do say this. But it could be a bit more prominent.

There does not seem to be a way to load files off my internal drive in my laptop, when I am using ff. Yes I made the change in the config file you suggested but it just does not work. I am to blame, I am sure. But please could you explain how this root/user thing works here. Please?

Installing ATI Catalyst dropped the temps of my system by a massive 15 degrees celsius. Holy Cow! This thing is cooler than Linux Mint. Please explain this to people in a faq. Also the applet CpuTemp or whatever it is called works perfectly in the task bar. I can even get 'sensors' to work in the terminal ;-) Kudos for this. These drivers which are a major bugbear in many distros, worked perfectly here. Most excellent!

That would be about it.

All I know is - I have a blazing fast distro, and the work that must have gone into it blows my mind.

Just wanna say thanks one more time. I will read your replies and get a bit more in detail when I am more together.

Sorry to see no one liked my wallpapers though, I was gonna upload some more. Oh well...

I will anyway ;-)

You have a very special distro here on your hands chaps, and some people that can really make it go forward...

Final word to icyos2, who turned me on to this. When he says "OH, Yes!",
I sit up and beg like a good little doggy ;-)

Installed on two systems, it's running great on both. Thanks again for your super Fatdog64-100. :D

Question:
What's the simplest way to remove the desktop drive icons?

1. Desktop: Custom built with BFG NVIDIA Geforce 8400 GS 512MB, Asus P6T Motherboard, Intel core i7-920 (8MB Cache, 2.66 GHz), DDR3 3GB 1333MHz ram, Pioneer DVR-2910 DVD+-RW Dual Layer Burner, Realtek ALC1200 Audio, HP Photosmart C5280 All-in-One

2. Dell Inspiron Laptop, i7-2630QM CPU 2.00 GHz, MESA DRI Intel(R) Sandybridge Mobile, 8GB RAM

Cheers, :D

I installed the icewm in the fatdog package manager and found that it
works fine with this Icewm-themes-1.2.26-Lucid.pet, I uploaded it to
datafilehost a few months ago, here is the link:

I can understand if they require 2.14, that was released a year ago. 2.15 however is just released 3 months ago!
2.16 was just released last month... im sure some devs out there have already started using it. I knowmy arch install already has it. Considering how bugs are... it really does suprise me that arch is as stable and bug free as it is. They dont wait anytime before pushing out updates. lol
Sometimes though I think taking things a bit slower is the right course of action.
I may see if I can update fatdog to glibc 2.15. But that'll depend on if I get time over the next few weeks. Are you aware of any potential landmines I may be facing? Or if I follow the slackbuild scripts should I be ok?

Sometimes you can do that without any problems, but everything is built against it, you could have problems.

Haven't tried Opera for a while. Unfortunately you can't compile Opera to make sure it's compatible with Fatdog's libraries. Maybe someone else who's using Opera can chime in.
But please could you explain how this root/user thing works here. Please?
By default Seamonkey/Firefox is run by user spot. Spot can only write in a few places. If you have a file that Seamonkey/Firefox, running by user spot, needs to modify, place that file in the Downloads folder, then open Seamonkey/Firefox. When Seamonkey/Firefox is opened it changes the owner of all the files in the Downloads folder to user spot. If you want the root user to run Seamonkey/Firefox, see http://distro.ibiblio.org/pub/linux/dis ... -spot.html

I'm out of town this week, don't know how often I'll be able to check in.

Sorry, there isn't an option in Fatdog to do so. You can try to add "hwclock --hctosys --utc" in /etc/rc.d/rc.local.
I have no idea where to find these extensions so I can delete them.

Fatdog comes with *two* sshd server. The simpler one (dropbear) is pre-configured, all you need to do is start the service from Control Panel - System - Manage Services. The full OpenSSH sshd server is also available but it is not pre-configured - you'll need to do it yourself.
Please note that enabling dropbear automatically also enable sftp. If you don't like this simply delete /usr/libexec/sftp-server.

drive icons

#60 Post by DC »

Hi Jamesbond and Kirk,
just been reminded of icon drive wobble.
FYI
fresh boot drive icons - ok
2,3,5,6,7,8,9,10,11,12 (4 was a extended partition)

open gparted
2,3,5,9,12,7,11,6,8,10 - mounted drives 2 and 3 did not move

close and reopen gparted
2,3,12,8,9,5,6,11,7,10
etc

DC
a little bit of knowledge and I'm dangerous

This allowed Libreoffice to run but with non English characters in the menus. It seems to work ok in the document though with Australian English.

It appears there are deps missing.

# libreoffice3.5 --writer

It doesn't look like your using the libreoffice-3.5.3.2.sfs from the 600 repo. Is this the one for 500 or something different? Sorry if you've already said and I missed it.

I installed the get_libreoffice package from the repo then ran it. It downloaded libreoffice and created the SFS which I loaded and this is the result. It's version 3.5.4.2

Been doing a little bit of promotion for the Fatdog.
You might see a few more downloads in the next few days if all goes according to plan.

I was thinking I might write a little tutorial for people trying to make a USB install. It is obvious that the devs think this is trivial and how they explain it should be straightforward to anybody.

It took me four or five hours to do. I program a bit of Java, Perl, PHP.
It was cryptic to say the least. I could figure it out, but it took a long time and most casual users would not be able to do it. And even if they could they would not have the time.

Please feel free to call me thick or dull. I am not the sharpest tool in the box, that is for sure. But without a consensus of at least a couple of hundred people to compare notes, I think it's fair to say, this was harder than it needed to be. I am willing to interface and write a tutorial for less technically inclined souls. I am talking about not just getting the usb stick to boot but the ram options also. Yes, they were well explained, but not everybody is as technical as me, or has the time.

Anyway, please tell me where I should put this tutorial or who I should send it to, when it is done.

In the Control Panel > Utilities, there is an applet called Savefile Argument Builder. Here is the basic idea.

When you first run FD600, you create a save file. But either it's in the wrong place for your USB install or it's in the right place, but your bootloader argument is wrong.

Boot off the USB device and put the save file in the right place.

Run the Savefile Argument Builder and follow the instructions. It will generate the correct argument that you can then paste into your bootloader config file.
