Sub_title: forgotten root password on Pup 5.3.3 installed to USB pen

I apologize for asking what has probably been asked 1000 times but I can't find it in the posts. I'm very new to Linux but I want to learn it so I adopted my first Puppy distro, Lucid Puppy 5.3.3 I installed it to my flash drive, everything worked, eth0 interface worked and I could connect to networks & internet...sweet. This was during my very first session after installation, so there was no pup_save.sfs file setup yet until I logged out - at which point i was asked to choose between staying as 'root' user or changing to 'fido'. I picked "fido", but now my ethernet isn't working all the way so I can't connect to networks or the internet. the dhcpd log file says that one of the dhcpd programs in Puppy DOES NOT WORK UNLESS YOU ARE LOGGED IN AS THE ROOT USER. In the dhcpd log it's clear..from Frisbee tool...sends signals to the network, network acknowledges, et, etc, then the carrier refuses to assign an IP address which I think is dhcpd related.

I never knew the root password, it logged me in autologin at boot. Now I'm Fido without networking - so I have tried to squirm around the password issue every which way with no luck...

QUESTION: is there any way to get back as root user from fido if you dont have the root password?

Thanks in advance for any assistance.

John

Welcome to Puppy mate.

Just pop your usb into any computer and delete the save file.

If your comp can boot the Puppy cd,
just boot it there and delete it.

Just don't delete this file...OK.....>>> luci_528.sfs
which is the main >>> .sfs file

Then it will boot fresh.
If the usb boots with the menu

Click F2 and type >>> puppy pfix=ram
note the space>> between puppy and >>> pfix

as long as you type only one letter
Puppy won't boot until you hit Enter

so type the above >>> Hit Enter >>> Puppy boots with no save
mount the usb at the desktop

delete the save file that way.

or the main Lucid file.

Lucid is now up to >> Version 005 >> released APR 05 2012

playdayz also released one with Libre Office.

Enjoy...and reply back please mate.
And keep that Fido in the kennel where he belongs.
