Can't save partition table on USB stick

#1 Post by irishrm »

I have a 16g usb stick which had been giving trouble from time to time.
The latest was that some files were converting to read only.

So I decided to do a complete format.
I deleted the partition table with the idea of re-building it and then formatting.

Using one of the programs on the hiren's cd I was able to re-build the partition table but I couldn't save it.
It threw up the this error (0000045D)

Without a partition table its not possible to do a format.

Googeling the error seems to suggest that its the end of life for my usb but maybe someone may have a solution.

Run Gparted. From the menu bar, select Device>Create Partition Table.

Does that help?

Thanks for the reply.

No: saving the partition table is the problem.

As I say I can re-build ok but can't save.

The error means that there is a problem during the input/output operations. In other words, the program cannot read something from the disk.

Do you have reasons to believe that you have bad sectors on your hard drive? Or that some other application [ex: an antivirus] is trying to open the file while Private Disk tries to read it?

Here is what you should try:

Make a copy of your image before you attempt anything.
Disable the antivirus [or other applications that scan files in the background] and try to mount the image.
Scan your disk for bad sectors and try to fix the errors [if any]. but ONLY after making a backup copy of the image.

Have you had any problems with your computer recently? For instance, system crashes, or power surges?

Can you recall any event which, in your opinion, lead to the appearance of this error?

Thanks for the reply.

This USB has a bit of history I'm afraid
Before it came into my possession it had been de-fragged a couple of times resulting in a complete loss of the data on it. ( I think that may be the cause ?)

I managed to get it working again doing roughly what I was attempted to do this time.
This time it didn't work.

I can't format because It doesn't have a partition table and while I can build one I can't save it.

Thanks for all the ideas.
I will be giving them a go and I will report on progress, if any.

At this stage this is an effort to learn something new.
I don't think I would be prepared to thrust this USB with data again but I would still love to get it back working again.

For information purposes:

Tried all suggestions and then some but could not save partition table.

So USB is now consigned to the bin (recycle).

Thanks to rcrsn51 and cthisbear for replying.

While there seems to be some differing opinions here, I believe the general consensus is to not defragment a flash drive... that there is greater potential for more harm than good, as explained in this article: http://www.worldstart.com/is-defrag-nee ... sh-drives/
