Hello all !

UPDATE : Mate with Precise 5.2.60 !

Here is a version with Precise Puppy, and with the latest Mate 1.4 !
More stable and reliable !
In this version, you'll have a new appearance, a Puppy menu (thanks rg66 & `f00 ), Glib 2.32, GVFS 1.12, & a working JWM ( no icons problems with menus ).

ISO is 220mo, largest than the previous sorry :

Okay, I would like to introduce this time, a new desktop environment, Mate !
What is it ? It's "a species of holly native to subtropical South America used to prepare a beverage called mate" ! Hmm no, no... I was wrong ...

Wikipedia is better than me :
MATE (Spanish pronunciation: [ˈmate]) is a desktop environment forked from the now-unmaintained code base of GNOME 2. The name derives from yerba mate, a species of holly native to subtropical South America used to prepare a beverage called mate.[1] The renaming is necessary to avoid conflicts with Gnome 3 components.
You will find all applications, all functional!

Caja - File manager (from Nautilus)
Pluma - Text editor (from Gedit)
Eye of Mate - Image viewer (from Eye of Gnome)
Atril - Document Viewer (from Evince)
Engrampa - Compression tool (from File-roller)
MATE Terminal - Terminal emulator (from Gnome terminal)

I baptised this version "GeNOME", since this is fork WM, with a cellular division in background.

I put screenshots :

Again a nice Desktop, with a Vladstudio's background.

I have for now rearrange the menu, and add a shortcut to turn off the PC, but I have for now rearrange the menu, and add a shortcut to turn off the PC, but PupShutdown is present.

SIZE ISO : 209 MO ! Light for a full gnome desktop ! :D

I hope you'll enjoy GeNOME ! ! :D

Sourceforge was evidently having problems today because the download was painfully slow but.......... the end result looks good here.Sound, internet and display all working.
Glad to see a Mate version....... I'm another of those users that prefer Gnome 2 over Gnome 3 so it's good to see an active fork of Gnome 2 continue the tradition.
Anyway, no problems yet...... :)

I installed mate to a 4gb flash drive.
I installed the devx and kernel source sfs + the proprietary nvidia
driver.
Added some applications, lost the volume control from the panel
somewhere along the way.

It's working pretty well so far, still exploring :)

Hello !

I prefer Mate too than Gnome 3 ! :D
It was especially interesting for the next GTK3.
Sorry for the delay, as long as it does not take long ...

Sound applet lost ? I will put the old default puppy's applet. It works always :D

I may be port the MintMenu to this Puppy mate...

Yeah, good news ! :D

Hmm... Maybe is it instable with many installations ? :?

Hi Jejy!

Upon what Puppy version did you base this? Is this likewise based upon Slacko as is your "Checkmate"? There is a reason why I ask: Slacko - and Slackware per se - does not run well upon my computer unfortunately. Debian-based distros seem to run the very best.

This Mate looks beautiful indeed and having run Puppy-4.2.1 for a very long time with the gnome desktop I would love running your Mate most definitely! Yet if based upon Slacko... :(

Your Checkmate was equally beautiful by the way. You do an excellent job of melding desktop environments into Puppy and keeping them both lite-weight and breath-takingly beautiful! Who would ever think our small distro could so far surpass the "Big Boys" in size, useful applications per megabyte, and sheer beauty? :)

Thank you for your diligence and hard work Jejy!

Cheers/Amicalement,

Eyes-Only

I've been using this all day (with a nap timeout) and it's working great, I just run alsamixer in the terminal to set the sound levels.
The control center,caja,etc works.
I first noticed the volume control missing after installing the proprietary Nvidia driver but I'm not certain that was the cause.

Anyways, this is awesome! :)

Nice desktop, Billtoo.

Jejy69,
Will you be porting the Mint-style menu to the Mate desktop as well?

EDIT: I just finished downloading this puplet and am replying from it via Seamonkey. I know it's still early, but the "Other" menu is overloaded, while the "Graphics" and "Office" menus are lacking.

For some reason, I didn't get an internet connection at first boot. I have a wired LAN connection and found it odd that I had to use the Simple Network Wizard to get my internet up and running.

All-in-all, I know you've put a lot of effort into this, and it's a great start. I'm sure it will be fantastic once it's finished.

I'm really hoping that you add the Mint-style menu to this one as well.
Somehow, for me, it just makes the OS look a lot more polished.

It seems just based on Slacko 5.3.3 and does have too much stuff in the "Other" menu.

It's a nice beginning though, I probably won't install it until it gets to a higher kernel and gets a clearer menu, but great for a first try at this.

Hello !

@ Keef : Sorry, it's changed.

Yes, this is based on Slacko, previous versions of Puppy dependencies hold too old, and I am unable to update them, without breaking the system. However, for those who can not run Slacko due to a PC too old or other, I prepared a version of CheckMate based Racy.
I will try a Mate on Racy too.

For the next release, I will install the Puppy Menu like CheckMate, the MintMenu is in preparation, & the sound applet'll be remplaced, since it seems to be instable.

Thanks to follow this derivative. :)

Nice job again!!!

I might even like this one better than CheckMate. Hopefully you'll keep at it and work the bugs out.

Just a note, if you install python_plus-2.6.6-i486-s.pet from Slacko repository the menu editor will work!

Just for the record, Slacko has newer gcc, glibc and backend libs than Racy, so it would probably be better to stick with Slacko, rather than go with Racy. Racy is just Wary with newer kernel and newer Xorg.

If you want to go with something newer than Slacko, then Precise Puppy, would be the one; but it is still in beta, as far as I know.

In fact, I made a base with racy to allow older PCs can run the derivative. If I do, it will be just for LXDE, mate or gnome require more dependencies and I awayls break the system...
Upup seems to be a good idea, but few PCs can make it work right? :?
I'm really tent by Upup.

what do you think about that, Slacko, or Upup?

Need a translator please...

What is it ?
/usr/lib/linuxmint/mintMenu/mintMenu.py
/usr/lib/python2.6/site-packages/MateCORBA.so: undefined symbol: PyUnicodeUCS4_FromUnicode
I haven't found information about that...

Oops, my apologies; I misunderstood your original post. But if you want to make a Puplet for older hardware, why not go with Wary instead of Racy?
Wary has the older kernel and thus has drivers for older hardware.

Upup tested fine for me on an 8 year old Pentium 4 machine, but if you're content with using Slacko, there's nothing wrong with that.
