3 steps to turn puppy or an old droid into your home phone

#1 Post by technosaurus »

This will allow you to use your smartphone or old computer as your home phone using your internet connection.

1. Register for a free sip account here or here
2 Use that account to get a free washington state # here
3. download/install a voip app
-for Puppy PuppyPhone or Linphone or whatever
-for Droid I had success with zoiper and csipsimple on a phone without a sim card using wifi only to recieve phone calls ... call id even works (linphone+ipkall+zoiper)

Note the default port for sip is 5060 in case your app asks.

Next step using freedompop to make it 100% free with their free 500mb/month plan (device purchase required)

If you already have a working cell and just want to shut it off, you can just get upptalk and be able to make outgoing calls (not just incoming) If not you can just get a burner phone with a small number of minutes. Then you can shut off your service and use upptalk over wifi for free ... and if you have freedompop really free.

I have tested upptalk as well even with a phone that had been shut off and it worked fine, but I'd be interested to hear anyone's experience with freedompop.

Edit: upptalk has removed the totally free calling, but you can use google voice.
Just go to Google Voice and sign up for a google voice number (by default you only get a voicemail number ... you need an actual number) Pick one in your preferred area code (not all area codes are available, but most metropolitan areas are)
Add your IPKall number as one of your numbers. You will probably have to verify the number since the numbers are recycled, so keep your VOIP client turned on and wait for the automated call. Then follow the instructions.
Once complete you can make calls from google voice that will ring your IPKall account and dial the outgoing number and incoming calls will automatically ring the same number.

Hi, technosaurus.

I can see how to save big with your suggestion.

You mention a Washington State number. Is this for Americans only?
Would you know of an equivalent in Canada, for Canadians? Or outside the
U.S. of A. generally?

Thanks in advance.

I'm not sure what you mean... do you mean if you show any interest in it, then they keep on you until you try ... and maybe even after?

No, ozzies can get a US number as well, so if you have friends/family in the states they can call that number and you have an excuse for not calling them :)

Actually I found UppTalk that allows outgoing calls too (free US calls, but weird ass ways to get international credits)

They do not ask all the personal details all at once so you can determine upfront what is required. They start with simple info that should be enough for there needs but ask just one question more invasive and then more invasion. Seen that tact more and more for slezzy purposes.

Hi, technosaurus.

Except for the forum members here, I have no friends in the USA. :) (If that
is an awkward turn of phrase, I apologize... A "French-ism", probably...)
And I wouldn't phone them, now, would I?

In any case, I'm with videotron.ca at present, and if I could avoid the
phone part of the bill (which is about half), I'd like that. But that means
finding a Canadian service (or services?) point for point equivalent to
what you are describing, technosaurus.

Thanks for the effort, though. BFN.

I wasn't sure if upptalk included Canada but just checked and they do - its free unlimited to US and Canada (sms too)... they only have android/iphone though - no linux client... I guess you could run it in droid emulator from the android SDK though.
