The command ONLY applies to the HP. The Canon does not require firmware.

This E-series must only be available in Asia. I have built the driver and posted it here. Click the gray Download button on the left.

In CUPS, your printer will be listed as a Canon E510 Series, not as a PIXMA.

Please report back. If the driver works, I will build the matching scanner driver.

Excellent. I have posted the E510 scanner driver here. Make sure that you also install the "common" package.

This driver does NOT work with Xsane. Use the Scangearmp program instead.

There is no Linux driver for the iP1600. But I found a site that claimed you could use the iP2200 driver instead.

There is a download link for the iP2200 on the first page. Click the grey Download button on the left.

Please report back.

Driver for Canon MX922

#119 Post by Dpup »

I have been using Puppy Slacko 5.6 and CUPS for printing on ancient turn of the century Canon S750, and it worked fine, but the old printer is showing its age and needs to be retired.

Bought new Canon MX922, but have not been able to get it to work with Slacko 5.6. No CUPS driver, tried several other Canon models listed in CUPS update of 2012 without success, but am aware that Canon Asia did post a driver for the MX920 series for Debian Linux. Also the printer does work WiFi with Windows, Apple IPad, IPhone, Android smart phones and tablets, And Canon has posted their PIXMA Printing System (PPS) on Google Play.

Any chance of getting a PET update for CUPS to support the Canon MX922?

Would be greatly appreciated.

Update 1-04/01/2014
Have not seen any responses or suggestions, expert rcrsn51 has not posted since end of Jan., hope he is OK... Anyway I am still trying to get Canon MX922 CUPS to work, tried installing the MX920 series Debian driver, showed up in CUPS when I searched for new printers, but printing went into bit bucket, and status showed complete with nothing printed. Then I installed into Slacko 5.7, Chrome 21 pet that was posted by Playdaz a while back... It supports Google Cloud print which most newer printers support... and it works !!! So certainly one way to get basic wireless printing from newer or printers that do not have Linux drivers, but do support Google Cloud print, when printer is WiFi connected. Also cloud printing working well with Android smartphones, tablets, and Apple IPads and IPhones. None need any specific driver to print.

Curious and like to hear from others on their experiences with making newer printers work, or other, even better solutions.

Update 2-04/01/2014, Edit 04/02/2014
More searching... found peebee on 3/18 posted a updated Chromium 33.0.750 sfs specifically for Slacko 5.7. I loaded it, works now after I discovered that my response to data encryption caused failure to log onto my Google account.

Update 3-04/05/2014
Noticed that yesterday 04/04/2014 OscarTalks shows latest Chrome 33 pet posted. Installed it on Slacko 5.7, works great. I am still wondering why after nearly two months, thousands of views, not as single comment, or suggestion about CUPS and Canon MX922 driver. I understand that the many Cloud ready new printers that Chrome on Puppy Linux probably will enable basic printing without need for CUPS driver, which may not be available. I also wonder if there is a Google catch to get in user's wallet !!!

Canon MX922 CUPS

#121 Post by Dpup »

Thanks rcrsn51, happy to see you back! I tried the MX920 series pet you posted with Slacko 5.7. With firewall off, The MX922 was not detected... many dozens of tries. The printer is working basic printing with Chrome 33 and Chromium 34. But I would like to still get it to work with CUPS. I am aware of postings about the MX922 having something different than the MX920 that may be issue with needing different driver.

The Canon MX922 is on Amazon.com best seller list, and has very good user reviews. It is also being sold at Costco, Amazon and a number of other stores here in US for $99 now. It also has many very low cost suppliers of compatible ink cartridges.

Unrelated, I did borrow an old HP Photosmart C309a and using your posted updates, the C309a did wireless connect and works fine.

Any additional suggestions for me to try? Thanks.

@Dpup:

Are you using your MX920 as a local USB printer or as a networked printer?

Your first step should be to connect it directly and verify that the driver works.

If you are networking the printer, you need the cups_bjnp-1.0.pet from Page 1.

MX922 CUPS

#123 Post by Dpup »

rcrsn51, thanks...you are a genius !!!

Progress !!!... Direct USB connect prints fine on MX922 with CUPS and Slacko 5.7... now trying to get wireless to work.

I installed the cups_bjnp-1.0.pet, and it now sees the network printer, but when I print to it, CUPS reports "Failed to read Back Channel Data"

I have also borrowed a Canon MG5520 to try... But same issue no CUPS driver for MG5520. CUPS can see the printer, so I tried two closes CUPS drivers, and get error "Failed Side Channel...."

Thanks for the suggestions... I will keep trying anything to see if CUPS can work wireless with these popular Canon printers...

It sounds like the bjnp backend doesn't work with this model and you need the official Canon backend.

Go here and get the cnijfilter-mx920series-3.90-1-deb.tar.gz

Unpack it and locate the two files cnijfilter-common_3.90-1_i386.deb and cnijfilter-mx920series_3.90-1_i386.deb.

Click on each to install them.

Restart CUPS with the command /etc/init.d/cups restart.

Run CUPS and delete your current printer.

Rediscover your printer and select the cnijnet backend.

Canon MX922

#125 Post by Dpup »

rcrsn51, Again Thanks, Unpacked and installed the two files for i386 of my HP laptop and Slacko 5.7, and followed your posted instructions, And Whoopie !!!... the new Canon MX922 is now working with CUPS wireless or USB wired !!!

Am connected on the WiFi wireless using WPA2 TKIP...

You are a true master and genius !!! We cannot help but notice that tens of thousands have viewed this series about Canon printing with CUPS... And you came thru with the solution that has been so elusive for months on the current, and very popular, highly rated, new generation of Canon printer for Puppy Linux users... and all the dozens of other Canon printers too...
