Could I get that pet so I can put it in the next build? thanks |
Hi there
Slightly complicated as the wl driver has to be compiled specifically for a particular kernel + it has to be combined with the logic produced by rerwin which ensures that the best driver is used for the many types of broadcom wifi....
My pet supports a number of different kernels by making use of xdelta3 at install time. It therefore works fine as an add-on pet but isn't suitable as a pet to build into the iso.
Rerwin is hoping to get his logic accepted by Barry into woof2...
If you want just the driver compiled for the 3.2.18 kernel then I can post that for you - rerwin's latest (final?) logic is in the experiment-7 pet attached to:
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=77697&start=362
Sorry it's a bit complicated
Cheers

p.s. my add-on all-in-one multi kernel pet is here:

I will see what I can do about abiword in the next build. Will talk with Mick on this one.

That is ok at least people who need the pet by Rerwin can get it.
What I like about Puppy is that old dogs like me can learn new tricks
Thanks

I take it that smm is for getting mail right. |
Right.
It's like Mailwasher in Windows but not quite as good.
smm will show all the emails sitting on the pop3 server, and display some of the text content.
No infection can be downloaded by smm onto the PC.
Very handy.
Spam can be quickly ticked for deletion, and only the remaining mail downloaded onto the PC...
In my case by Thunderbird.
2. Used the PET you linked to install WINE, and it's now working OK.

I am downloading now, but that is probably because gvfs is not installed (the approach in Lucid 5.2.8.005). Slacko uses another approach. I will see if the technique from Lucid will work. Even if gvfs is installed a couple of other things need to be done
I will be any help I can be if I see any issues that we dealt with in Lucid (as the gvfs).
We already have one very nice Puppy (Slacko) with jwm and Seamonkey--maybe some consideration could be given to an alternate desktop--possibly one with a traditional trash/recycle system, maybe xfce or lxde. Jejy69 has derivatives that demonstrate both. I mention this because it might be good to test an alternate desktop from the beginning, if one was to be used.
LXDE -> http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=79810
XFCE -> http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=80010
This Google Chrome 21 pet seems to work -> http://diddywahdiddy.net/Puppy500/Google_Chrome-21-Lucid.pet

Hi
Sylvander
I am glad that wine is working for you,
playdayz
I do thank you for any help that you will bring to this. I would like to try the LXDE just not sure on how it would be done. Would probably need a pet or sfs right for woof build?
Thanks to everyone who has tested this puppy so far

Yes, to build it in to Woof you would need a pet. The packages from precise could be made into a pet. Someone would need to do a bit of work there but I could explain the basics, and so can quite a few other people--PPM will do l lot of the work by downloading the packages with dependencies.
Darn, The first attempt to install gvfs to enable the Help in Abiword did not work as it did in Lucid.
Making pets for Precise from Ubuntu repo. After Examine Dependencies, PPM will offer to download all of the packages. After downloading they will all be in /root--you can move them into their own folder along with loop-undeb.sh and then open a terminal in that folder and run ./loop-undeb.sh which will unpack the packages into the same set of /usr, /lib, etc., folders. You can then put those into their own folder and use dir2pet to make that into a pet. 01micko has a script that does some more of this automatically I think. This is not as easy as it was in Lucid because Ubuntu has started putting libs in /usr/lib/i386-linux-gnu/ instead of /usr/lib so maybe the path should be modified or else the libraries have to be moved in making the pet.
loop-undeb.sh
Code: | for file in *
do
undeb $file
done |
I made this Lxterminal pet using this method. You do have to know which dependencies are really necessary (in this case only lxterminal and libvte). IMHO the more people who can do this the more software would be available

I did a manual frugal install to the hard drive.
Installed devx,kernelsourcesfs,NVIDIA-Linux-x86-295.71.run
Added and updated the precise repos in ppm
Installed from ppm:
cmus,roxterm,kdegames,neverputt,tuxracer extreme,xfe,midnight
commander.
Pets added:
qt-482,umplayer-0.97,smplayer-0.8.0,smtube-1.1,vlc-2.0.1,gtkhash,geany-1.22,
htop-1.0.1
Compiled from source:
qupzilla-1.3.1
I updated to the newest flashplayer from adobe.com.
Display
Resolution 1280x1024 pixels
Vendor The X.Org Foundation
Version 1.11.3
OpenGL
Vendor NVIDIA Corporation
Renderer GeForce 8600 GT/PCIe/SSE2
Version 3.3.0 NVIDIA 295.71
Direct Rendering Yes
# glxgears
50704 frames in 5.0 seconds = 10140.756 FPS
50768 frames in 5.0 seconds = 10153.406 FPS
50771 frames in 5.0 seconds = 10154.192 FPS

Ok
playdayz
This is just for you I have made pets out of lxde, core utilities, icons and the other utilities everything that I found in the repo.
It does work but needs inprovement.
I just pmed Jejy69 and ask if he would be willing to make a pet as well for precise and I would put it in the build once 5.2.60 is released. Will make new build with it.
Cheers

I just tried your beta and all looks good.
There is one question that I would ask and it is not exclusive to this compilation of Precise.
Why is it that Puppy never includes the full set of kernel modules and drivers that Ubuntu includes?
If it is just a size thing then why not an addon with the rest of them?
Which ones am I looking for?
All of them.

What are those kernel modules which you are missing. I think that Puppies tries to involve good set of modules. The reducing have been usually done for dropping out stuff which is not needed in Puppies...like support to apple drivers, lirc drivers and so on....If there is useful kernel module missing....I am sure many here is interested and even Barry Kauler would like to hear what kind of module is needed. When I posted to Barry`s thread needed fixes for kernel compile....he included them all when I described why they are needed.
With my fix post...Precise Puppy got working logitech wireless receiver and bluetooth communication protocols were added.
Give us examples what you try to accomplish and why it fails...
Posting that I want them all....probably is not good enough reason to add all possible kernel modules.

Thank you for your prompt response.
Over the last year or so I have tried an assortment of devices on Puppy without success, due to missing modules, whereas they nearly all worked in Ubuntu.
I would like to get away from Ubuntu if possible but it is not yet possible.
Since I made the earlier post I have checked the kernel versions in Puppy Precise and Ubuntu Precise, and the Puppy one is older than the Ubuntu one.
That seems very strange to me that Puppy calls itself Precise when it is really pre-Precise.
The module I need currently is dvb-usb-it913x.ko, which I see has been asked for in this forum previously.
I tried the one from the real Precise but of course it didn't work due to different kernel version.
I may be wrong but wishing for all kernel modules doesn't seem to me to be an outrageous request, when they are all available in Ubuntu.
If I can get that module I could possibly live without Ubuntu, till the next module issue comes up.
If Puppy Precise used the same kernel version as the real Precise I could of course just use that one.
I hope this all makes sense.

Makes sense to me.
My son is currently attempting to make his new USB-dongle wireless network interface work on his old desktop PC...
And is failing on both WinXP and an older Lupu [526?] I gave him some time back.
I'm inclined to think the Puppy is unable to see the wlan0 interface in the Network Wizard because there isn't a module included in the kernel for that item of hardware.

Live run of beta1 and things look ok on my gear
One problem I did have is that on my nvidia graphics hardware glxgears would not run. It seemed that 16bit colours were enabled by default. I could not find any telltales in the relevant logs. I ran xorgwizard successfully and chose 24 colours then glxgears ran fine.
