So, ever the tweaker I decided to investigate. Well, running
aplay -l certainly confirmed that the card is indeed number 1. I could get sound no problems with gnome-mplayer (it can talk to the card directly), even setup retrovol (manually) no problem but alsa itself still wasn't working.
So, it dawned on me to run MultipleSoundCardWizard and select the one and only #1. Rebooted and it's all good.
I just wonder how many others could solve their sound issues this easily? It will be going into the release notes.
Mick I have similar setup, the same problem and the same solution . . .
I also used to just unplug from one card and plug into the other
if changing to a puppy without sound (seem to remember doing this with fatdog)

Tried installing pwidgets... both 2.3.8-pr20 and 2.4.0
Both installed and worked OK except both will not show the 'weather icons' (just a small rectangle box appears.)
Wifi setup was easy however, for the rt2800usb I had to use frisbee, regular SNS would not setup Wifi. It works nice and configures itself on bootup, even dropped once but automatically reconfigured itself again... very nice!
Graphics... simply beautiful!
On to more lots more testing over the weekend.

G'day,
Just to confirm sszindian's missing weather icon from pwidgets (and the drive-icon with the puppyspace widget). Missing in some other recent other pups too.
From the pwidget config files, I think these icons seem to be in TTF pdingobats. Which is in /usr/share/fonts when I look there.
So it's a puzzle for me.

pwidgets-2.3.7 works fine in 5.3.3...if u try it, let us know if the icins play

Weird how the weather font fails to show. It shows in abiword/libreoffice. Must be something to do with the
very old version of conky used in pwidgets. I'm afraid there isn't much that can be done about that as pwidgets is largely unsupported now days.
http://www.dafont.com/weather.font is a possible alternate font for weather only. Scripts will need hacking though... any takers?

Pwidgets should be rewritten to use svg/gtkdialog.

So? What do WE do? I reckon follow suit, else it means rolling back to the old
module-init-tools which will have to be recompiled against current libraries.
Oooh.. we will be getting latest alsa-lib-1.0.26 .. maybe it will work better? I'm particularly interested in old sound-blasters. I have 2 that really needed alsaconf, but my mobos that used them both died. I need an ISA mobo! I have RAM and CPUs (old coppermines and pc100 RAM). Anyone in SE Queensland got a spare?

It'll be a long wait, but I have a Skt7, (maybe later old Intel cr*p?) with an ISA slot. You are bang-on about ISA sound cards - inifinitely superior to modern junk. Many have on-board audio OP sufficient to fill a small-medium room on decent speakers.

Can somebody else test this?
If I do a frugal install of Slacko 5353 in a subfolder and use the psubdir argument, it works fine.
But if I install it at the root of a partition, so I don't need psubdir, it fails with "can't find the sfs file".
Slacko 533 works correctly, as does the latest Precise.

What bootloader are you using?
I just tried with grub4dos, here's the menu.lst entry:

It was booting off of my sfs in /dev/sda1. I hid that and got failure.
Also, a woof level bug is exposed when you have more than one HDD (I have 3). It only searches the first to save, or maybe it searches the HD it booted off, I'll need to check that, but I suspect the former because if it only checks the disk you booted off, why stop there? Should just check the partition you booted off if that is the case.

That's a relief. I was pretty sure that it couldn't just be me.
Like I said, it works OK in the latest Precise. At what stage would this bug have sneaked in?

No idea, but I need to sync with latest woof and go from there. I can't see anything I would have done, as I don't touch the initrd, which is where something like this would occur, which leaves the kernel, and I doubt that, though not discounting it altogether.

What version of grub4dos config is Precise using? (haven't time to boot into it ATM)
Slacko 533 works correctly, as does the latest Precise.

I'm booting with legacy GRUB. I don't think that this is a GRUB issue. The vmlinuz and initrd.gz files are found OK by GRUB.
It feels more like a bug in the search logic of the init. Or one of those weird timing issues.

I remember old persisting bug in finding the main sfs.
It may occur when you have multiple puppy_slacko_5.3.5.3.sfs in your PC...
the release note of the Puppy 431JP (2009) says:
Differences from original version
2. Some reading rules of the main SFS file and additional SFS file are different from the original 4.3.1.
- When two or more main SFS files exist in PC, and which SFS file might likely to be adopted, it to be different in a Japanese version and an original version.
I do not surely remember, but we found some bug in the original and we modified the initrd to fix it.
The logic in the recent woof is not the same of that time, but can remain some faults yet.

I found that a previous umplayer works properly (except for no menu entry) in 5.3.5.3
avplayersj2-slacko-i686.sfs
Everything works in this player but... you have to go to usr/local/bin/umplayer and drag it onto your desktop then give it an icon (use 'pfind file finder' to locate umplayer, it will list several icons in .png format, I used a 32x32 and it looks good.)
Hope this helps until someone can get the thumbnail graphics working in Mic's new version!
On further testing of 5.3.5.3 I find it to be a distro with a lot of potential for both new and seasoned users, googleearth is still extremely fast and the best I've used to date.
If pwidgets isn't going to be maintained, maybe we could get a new 'conky' with all the goodies in the PPM?
