Frugal install on my HP550 is looking good.

Broadcom WL wifi driver has been compiled for k3.2.28-4g and uploaded to:

http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic. ... 5&start=20

This is a delta file pet that needs to be loaded first followed by the multi-kernel pet which is in post #1 of the same thread.

Frisbee and Seamonkey and pnethood so far tested with the wl driver - all good.

Cheers

Superscan Network Scanner is broken. (It has been in several recent Puppies.) Both IP-range scans and port-range scans of my LAN fail.

The alternative is PeasyPort.

Frugal install to hard drive - boots ok

Full install to hard drive gives following error:
Ok, thanks for report.

I have found why and where this happens in a full install and it will be fixed.

EDIT:

majorfoo,

If you could gunzip the attached file, boot live, replace /etc/rc.d/rc.sysinit with this file in the full install it should fix the full installation. I have also removed the /media symlink as it failed to have the desired effect and has become an unnecessary redundancy.

Hi 01micko et al,

Using 5.3.5.3 via Multi-session live-CD, "Google Earth sfs" has a huge speed improvement over my 5.3.1 (with a message it needs a better driver) and glxgears averages about 75 frames per second (about 50 fps with 5.3.1).

When loading from the CD "copying to RAM" takes about 50 seconds, whereas with 5.3.1 it only takes about 2 seconds. It seems more likely that this is because of some action or inaction on my part rather than some inherent change in this later version of Slacko.

I'm away for a few days, thus a lull in testing.

My regards

Hmm.. doesn't that normally show the HOSTNAME in full install? Such as puppypc1234?

Might be a woof level bug, I'll do a full install and check it out.

Billtoo

Seems bootmanager doesn't like "slacko" in the name. Just rename it removing "slacko" and it shows up. I'll fix that, no problem.

Are you using google_earth-6.2.2 from Tman? It works fine for me. I tried to make an sfs but it failed with a weird error, something to do with dpkg-deb. I may have to compile that in slacko.

I'm using Google_Earth-6.0.3.2197-luki.sfs, I made that using the pet
from lucid puppy and it works with every version of puppy that I've
tried it on.
It's 34mb in size, it should still be in the saluki repository I think.

Everything is working well except sound, I've fiddled with alsamixer
and retrovol but I can't get sound to work.
There is a set of 5.1 speakers on this pc, 5 speakers and a big
subwoofer, will rattle the windows normally.
I can hear a couple of the speakers pop during bootup.

I have vector linux 7 and slackware 14rc3 on this pc as well and sound
works in both of them so I know they should be working.

Hmmm.... try alsawizard, and with >1 card use the multiple soundcard wizard, in alsawizard.

SoundBlasters should work ok. The only ones I have are ancient ISA ones, no mobo to test atm.

Manual mixed frugal install with kernel on USB and main sfs/save file on HDD.
Initial boot to desktop with working sound, wired ethernet & Nouveau driver.

Whilst the Nouveau driver is much better, a manual install of the proprietary
driver (NVIDIA-Linux-x86-304.43.run) provided smoother motion with video.

Extra fonts plus the following pets were installed and tested.
  • google_chrome-21-slacko|Access the Internet
flashplayer11-11.2.202.238|Adobe Flash Player 11 browser plugin and Preferences. Note, this may not work on older PCs, use instead an earlier 11.x or even 10.x
    fontwizard|Configure fonts for LCD
    Blue-Tripack|JWM themes
    faenza_lrx_new|no description provided
    xdotool-2.20110530.1-3|no description provided
    tempiconsvg-0.11-i486|temperature monitor
    PupControl-2.2|PupControl Panel
    PupShutdown-1.8|PupShutdown manager
    PupClockset-1.9|PupClockset manager
Only two minor problems showed up which may be related to the inclusion of "paw_and_bones":

1. The svg text on tempicon is about a third its normal size.
2. The right click "Change Network Tray Icon Theme" no longer works.

Hi 01micko & all;

my main computer:
Processor: 4x AMD Phenom(tm) II X4 945 Processor
Memory: 3375MB
ATI Radeon 3100 Graphics supporting 1600x900 pixels
RaLink RT2561/RT61 802.11g PCI
SB [HDA ATI SB], device 0: VT1708B Analog
SB {HDA ATI SB], device 1: VT1708B Digital

Slacko beta works well, without a hitch except perhaps 1:

Loaded LibreOffice 3,6. All of its applications can be started from the desktop files in /usr/share/applications/ from a terminal and from fbpanel I installed. None can be started from the Menu, except for the overview app "LibreOffice" (menu>Document>LibreOffice 3.6) from which other apps can be started. I had previously loaded your LibreOffice into OV-Precise from which it ran without the above problem.

As I run/test various Puppies, I prefer SFSes. I have run into a problem with all recent VLC SFSes. They run, but complain about not being able to decode video files. This occurs in Slacko, precise, ov-precise, maybe Exprimo (I don't recall). If I load VLC-1.2.sfs, it is able to play media files.
I don't know enough to know what's changed. Are all the vlc-2x.sfs dependent on Qt? I haven't installed it.

hmmmm....

alsaconf is severely broken.

It is broken in ALL distros.. (using kmod)

The new kmod (replaces module-init-tools) does not generate /lib/modules/`uname -r`/modules.pcimap or modules.isamap..

On the hunt for a fix..

This will affect dpup built from wheezy too...

I couldn't get the soundblaster audigy value card working so I took it out and replaced it with a Multimedia audio controller C-Media Electronics Inc CM8738 card.
Also using different speakers, a pair by logitech.
I have a soundblaster se in my hp desktop and it works great with this new beta.
Anyhow, I have sound :)

I couldn't get the soundblaster audigy value to work in about 4 puppy versions that I tried, old and new.
