Help needed writing the Wiki

If anybody can lend a hand it would be greatly appreciated. Even if it just correcting spelling and grammar, or commenting on pages. Its an easy way to give back to the project. Ideally, the Wiki would contain all there is to know about the Puppy universe, but in a structured manor.

At the moment there are only three regular contributors. Lobster keeping a track of new projects, Coolpup adding technical information and links to his/her software, and me indexing and trying to add easy to understand entries.

Known Issues
-Language support is bad to non-existent, to add a page in another language I would recommend prefixing the name with the two-letter country code and including category at the bottom. For example, AbiWord -
page name - FrAbiWord
category - CategoryFr
-wikka software is limited
-its a pain, adding info on forum and wiki

Routes to enhancement
-upgrade to latest Wikka software
-install wysiwyg plugin
-install (and write) language plugin
-write convertor phpBB code to/from Wikka code
-integrate with forum

First of all, thank you to all who have contributed! Tons keep changing & if you find yourself repeating yourself in this forum then it might be time for contributing to or creating a wiki page. (hint, hint)

I used to help a lot with the old wiki although I'm not sure where it went to....

Well, darkcity, for the enhancements you'll need to get Raffy's attention on that, of course. Hopefully he weathered the flooding over there okay though.

Could you explain more on why the enhancements would help (i.e. why worth the time)?

Hi J Rey

The old wiki was up simultaneously with the new one. Not sure why it changed? I added some of the old pages to the new wiki. I think it was taken down so people would get confused. Raffy might still have the original information if you want it.

Why bother with the enhancement, I'll take it one at a time?

-upgrade to latest Wikka software
Wikka version is out of date, 1.3 has redirect and improved security. Anchors and table of contents need adding in future version, in my opinion. Also, pages should be remembered when deleted. Although only admins can delete, it is useful to keep a record.

-install wysiwyg plugin
Easier to contribute

-install (and write) language plugin
Language support not good - international users can't use or contribute. In my head I had an idea for synchronizing different languages

-write convertor phpBB code to/from Wikka code
Post useful forum info to wikka, without have to re-add formatting, link and image info.

-integration with forum
You could add links in forum by [wiki]SaveFile[/wiki], share user names?

Wikka isn't great I started with Sycamore (Wikispot) and have used MediaWiki (wikipedia). Some people have said dump Wikka and use something else - notably DokuWiki, see http://puppy.b0x.me/wiki/doku.php. But I think the realistic approach is to enhance what we have.

I can't edit almost any public page, create new ones or post comments. Is this normal? Maybe my account(2010) was deactivated. Whatever, I don't care too much about it.

There have been a number of spam attacks in the past, and some accounts have been deleted. If your account has been accidentally deleted, please give me your email address so that I can recreate your account.

I will work on the upgrade on/before August 21.

@ Wow
Clearly that isn't normal. The whole point of wikis is to make it easy to collaborate.

@ Raffy
Thanks for looking after the wiki, some of upgrade features will be helpful.

The upgrade is completed - let's hope it is successful.

The page styles are new, and am still getting familiar with the new templates.

Let me know if you encounter any issues.

Nice work ; -)

We can now, redirect pages ; -)
http://docs.wikkawiki.org/RedirectActionInfo

and better still link to a specific header on a page, for example-

http://puppylinux.org/wikka/ComponentHo ... n_the_Wiki

so we can make table of contents and usable longer pages.

on the localization front, this page talks about using gettext,
anybody understand what its on about?

I see the settings have revert to default on the Wiki. Comments aren't expanded and non existent pages don't have a dashed underscore.

Also, there are some bugs in the software. I've report the fact you can't indent tables without messing up the rest of the page. I will also report that sometimes you need a double return when a single should do and link with # in break, although using [[ ]] fixes them.

Will check on these issues this week. In the config, comments are not hidden (same as before), so the new version must have ignored it.

1.3.3 came out in May 2012. When do we upgrade?

the weird part is the doc homepage doesn't mention 1.3.3
and there is no 'whats new page' for 1.3.3

http://docs.wikkawiki.org/HomePage

maybe 1.3.3 is a development release?

Yes, weird, look at the wikkawiki docs (see below).

OK, will have to upgrade again this weekend or whenever I get a fast connection while I travel.

We could ask them what's happening . . . :)
Wikka devs, drop us a note at community@wikkawiki.org community <at> wikkawiki.org, or drop in on our Freenode IRC channel, #wikka.

Hi all! Sorry for the confusion...1.3.3 is, in fact, the most recent stable version. I'm pretty much the only active developer on the project now, so I'm a little behind on the documentation (the reason why there is no 'What's New' page for 1.3.3). But I can assure you 1.3.3 is production quality.
