OscarTalks. That repo is Debian multimedia main repo. And yeah....it has newer versions of same apps and those apps uses newer libs so it offers them. I had to narrow the real name. It should download from there if you select different download location, if I remember right, it was multimedia. I am atm in experimental Barrys 3.8 rc kernel Precise Puppy, because I really need to know what 3.8 kernel offers. I have spent last evening reading about 3.8 kernel. It sure has some improvements. So...I cant write things exactly how they work in dpup wheezy.

That multimedia repo also has multimedia apps which are not in those main repos.

Sure it is confusing....but there are really good stuff also and that repo will be updated with new stuff also.

Not sure yet if it will brake existing apps. If I download newer libx264, the previous one is not overwritten. Okay libx264.so will point tho the newer one...but I believe ffmpeg still finds the older real one.

To download from there an app. Yeah....it needs understanding that the base libs might come first from debian main repo and then you need to click the multimedia repo when the PPM asks from where to download all those dmo packages. Usually the suffix dmo tells that okay....these are from multimedia repo.

So....you need to swap the download location during downloading if you want to download stuff which needs stuff from main and multimedia repo.

I have had multimedia main repo long time in dpup exprimo. It is there so that people have opportunity to have extra stuff from there.

And...previously....with squeeze...some multimedia libs are only in multimedia main repo. When I compiled multimedia apps, I had to have access to that repo. I havent investigated what is the status now. At least the base distro didnt use them at all.

Anyway....just disable the repo if it has side effects. Of course at this stage of the build....I would more likely to hear what it brakes if you download apps from there.

Updating process of the database files. It sure is confusing. PPM notices that I have distro which might have update repos and asks if you want to download from them...if you click yes....it tries to download from there...but with debian wheezy....there arent any update repos available and at least multimedia update repo trial brakes the script. I would not like to try to hack Barrys PPM system.

You can check inside /root/.packages/Packages-debian-wheezy-mmd_main database file to see all those packages the debian multimedia repo offers. It has some useful multimedia apps there...and that repo also will be updated all the time with newer versions. So....not sure if it should be disabled.

Pemasu, I did a frugal of Barry's precise 5.4.91 on k3.8rc7 and
wlan0 power management is ON by default. It has the wireless
bug. I had difficulty connecting, download speeds were low, and
it lost connection. My fix took care of it ok.

This precise and kernel allow me to use the Linux rt2500pci
driver, unlike your 3.7.2 where I had to use my Windows driver.
Maybe it was this that perhaps fooled me into believing that
the 3.7.2 kernel is free of the bug. Maybe it just affects the
Linux driver ??? IOW, why would the bug return on a later kernel?
But then why would power management be OFF by default
with 3.7.2 simply because I had to use the Windows driver?

Maybe you can make more sense of what I've seen than I can.

Artsown. Good to hear that rt2500pci works better with 3.8 rc kernel, I mean that you able to use it.
About that power management. I think it is because of your usage of windows driver. You use it with ndiswrapper, which unloads possibly loaded linux drivers. Power management probably does not count on windows driver.

Anyway....it looks like that rt2500pci power management feature is still not fixed but the driver at least is usable.

Posting this from Precise Puppy with 3.8 rc kernel. Working fine for me.
There are some new wireless drivers included also. Like realtek rtl8723ae, but Barry didnt include the needed firmwares for it. I have hunted those down now and have them in repository, lol.

# modinfo rtl8723ae
firmware: rtlwifi/rtl8723aefw_B.bin
firmware: rtlwifi/rtl8723aefw.bin

Well, pemasu, I've learned the hard way to not make a quick judgement
about a particular pup. But so far Barry's 5.4.91 is looking very good
on my old pentium 4 desktop. I've played with changing the screen res.
and selecting the video driver and that went ok. I've rebooted several
times and installed some pets, and also used PPM to d/l and install
Firefox 18.02.

There are now so many pups that work well (and fast!) on my old PCs
that it's difficult to choose a "best".

In distro Dpup Wheezy 3.5.2.4 is modesetting driver, but it doesn't work with the videocard GMA 500, it is possible because there is no file /etc/X11/xorg.conf-poulsbo.
If to start xorgwizard, then X is not loaded.

Here is Linphone 3.5.2 with all the extra audio and video codec plugins included and the assistant wizard working. Compiled in Wheezy 3.5.2.4

Signing up for a sip account is easy, but it works without. Go through the preferences, I recommend disabling the speex 32000 ultra-wideband audio codec and the VP8 video codec, both of which are at the top of the lists.

Call to "sip:9877@qxip.net" (without the quotes) for the H264 codec video echo test.

With datafilehost you want the smaller "download" button.
The larger "download now" thing is an ad.

Pemasu,

Just a couple of observations / suggestions

Compiling v4l-utils source creates v4l1, v4l2 and v4lconvert libs together.

Consider including v4lconvert.so.0 and the v4lconvert.so symlink

Compiling speex source creates libspeex and libspeexdsp together.

Consider including libspeexdsp with symlinks.

Oh, and please consider upgrading pClock to latest 0.7.1

skype 4.1 dependencies

#189 Post by Xtanova »

Hi Pemasu:

I used to be able to use skype 4.1 dynamic on dpup squeeze by loading the Qt4 SFS I had from your repository, with some other gstreamer libs it requests, and I'd downloaded them manually from the debian repository .

On dpup wheezy it didn't work as it keeps requesting the Qt and pulse audio libs despite i had installed them.

I attached the skype dependency sheet, because i don't understand the structure change in the wheezy build, and how can I get skype to find the installed Qt libs.

Xtanova.
First I installed this: skype-ubuntu-lucid_4.1.0.20-1_i386.deb and this works also:

Code: Select all

wget -O skype-install.deb http://www.skype.com/go/getskype-linux-deb
Then I used PPM. It seems that I had to update the debian main repo using configuration button.
After that I installed these using PPM:
libqt4-xml_4.8.2+dfsg-11
libqtcore4_4.8.2+dfsg-11
libqtdbus4_4.8.2+dfsg-11
qdbus_4.8.2+dfsg-11|qdbus
libqt4-dbus_4.8.2+dfsg-11
iso-codes_3.40-1
libaudio2_1.9.3-5
libgstreamer0.10-0_0.10.36-1.1
libgstreamer-plugins-base0.10-0_0.10.36-1
libqt4-network_4.8.2+dfsg-11
libqtgui4_4.8.2+dfsg-11
libqtwebkit4_2.2.1-5|
libqt4-webkit_4.8.2+dfsg-11

skype launched and sound worked. It complained in console about pulseaudio, well it should because there is not working pulsesaudio system in dpup wheezy. Side effects of the libpulse includement.

Cheers.

Dpup Wheezy 3.5.2.5 has been uploaded. I have used latest woof.

Debian main repo with PPM should work now without updating the databases.
Bbe binary has been added so that PPM fixes the root user problem for example with vlc.
Pulseaudio problem fixed ....so that skype does not pollute xerrs.log with error messages. It needed /usr/share/alsa/alsa.conf.d directory removal of pulse files. I found the tip from the net.
I have added the support files for intel atom poulsbo graphics, from 01micko`s pet.
And all the fixes included by using latest woof.

So this build is bug fix release for smoother using.

It didn't see my ethernet at first, SNS seems to work better than
Network manager.
Ethernet controller Intel Corporation 82566DC-2 Gigabit Network Connection
Pets made in Upup precise wouldn't work so I made a few in wheezy
(xfe and mc) both compiled without problems.
I installed lxterminal in ppm.
That's it so far.

Same here. My ethernet wasn't recognized either. Don't know, if SNS works better or not, I didn't bother to test the other one. And it's very unusual, that my ethernet wasn't picked up at once. I just forgot when I last used a network manager to set it up. At the risk of sounding petty and grumpy, I'm once again reporting, that there's no firewall icon in the taskbar. Its presence gives me peace of mind. It's like you'll have a better sleep, knowing there's a loaded gun under your pillow :/

Billtoo and Anikin. I suppose you both mean that there wasnt ethernet autoconnection. I suppose you didnt have to modprobe your ethernel kernel module driver. And so...your ethernet was autorecognized ie the driver was loaded but the internet connection was not automatic. Or did I decipher your posts wrongly.

Anyway...I should not have touched to anything concerning internet autoconnection. But....I need to test myself.

About firewall_state tray app...yeah...I still keep the base sfs quite bare. Just install that tray app from murga-forum. Easily found.

It didn't auto connect, I loaded the module and it said it was already
loaded.
Network wizard would connect but it wasn't persistent boot to boot,
SNS was.
Also have problems with vlc, I couldn't get the one in ppm to work, I
made my own but it needs to be installed every reboot and also started
from the terminal.
I tried starting it with the grun utility and typing vlc it would
change to vlc-wrapper, changing back to vlc loaded it but it seemed to
be loading every sound and video file on the disk, stopping vlc and
loading a file or directory works then.
Were you able to install vlc from ppm?

My ethernet didn't autoconnect either on this one. First try SNS reported that the interface had no connection. Rebooted the live CD and this time SNS connected. I don't usually have to do anything.

Okay. About this ethernet autoconnection feature or better lack of it. It is new Puppy feature. The change which causes this is here:
http://bkhome.org/blog2/?viewDetailed=00105
and the affected files are listed here:
http://bkhome.org/fossil/woof2.cgi/info/b152ca1f61

I traced them down to /sbin/pup_event_frontend_d script and to the net_setup pet.
Using net_setup-20111016.pet ie older version and copying the pup_event_frontend_d from previous woof I was able to autoconnect.
The fix starts to work after swapping the script and installing the previous net_setup pet and rebooting.

I have tested this now several times and I think my finding is accurate.

So...for giving Frisbee place in Woof, the ethernet autoconnection was lost. Not sure if this was intentional downgrade or non-intentional misbehavior. It should be asked from Barry Kauler.
